Universal Moves Seth MacFarlane’s TED Up to June 29

Hot on the heels of the news that Paramount is pushing back G.I. Joe: Retalitation to March of 2013 at the last minute, Universal has swooped in and grabbed the film’s old release slot of June 29th for the comedy Ted.  The film is Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut and this allows the comedy to open before the summer’s big superhero pics, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, dominate the box office.  It’s a smart move on Universal’s part, as late June is void of any adult comedy releases.  Ted was previously set for July 13th, but now the film faces off against Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper pic Magic Mike, the dramedy People Like Us, and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection (sigh).

Ted stars Mark Wahlberg as a 35-year-old man who’s still best friends with his teddy bear, Ted (voiced and mo-capped by Macfarlane), after his childhood wish brought the stuffed animal to life.  The first red-band trailer was a bit polarizing, but  I thought Wahlberg hit all the right comedic notes and I’m looking forward to the film.

While Universal Pictures skipped CinemaCon/ShoWest the past couple of years, they more than made up for it with the best presentation of 2012.   While all the studios have great-looking movies arriving in 2012 and 2013, I wanted to see every single movie Universal talked about at CinemaCon  In addition, not only did they bring in the movie stars and directors, they world premiered footage from nine movies including Les Miserables, Ted, Savages, This is 40, R.I.P.D., Oblivion, The Bourne Legacy, Snow White and the Huntsman, and 47 Ronin.  In addition, they made sure to remind attendees that while filming hasn’t started on Fast and Furious 6 (the working title), it’s arriving next May, and Despicable Me 2 opens in July.  For what I thought about all the movies plus a complete video blog recap, hit the jump.

While walking around at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, I’ve been taking tons of pictures of all the posters/banners/theater standees that have been on display.  For those unaware, CinemaCon is a convention put on for theater owners in order to get a look at what the studios have to offer for the rest of the year, and where vendors can show new products for theaters to buy.  It’s basically Comic-Con for theater owners.  Besides showing off never before seen footage, the studios often bring the cast and the filmmakers.  Over the course of a few days, Hollywood comes to Las Vegas.

While a lot of the banners are just logos, I think they’re still worth checking out.  Also, it’s important to note that the posters/displays change during the week so you never know when something cool will premiere.  Hit the jump for posters/banners for a ton of movies including James Bond Skyfall, Dark Shadows, Moonrise Kingdom, Sparkle, That’s My Boy, Sinister, The Amazing Spider-Man, House at the End of the Street, The Host, Battleship, Looper, Step Up Revolution, Ted, Sinister, Here Comes the Boom, and so many more.

Awesome Theater Standee for Seth MacFarlane’s TED

While there are many huge movies arriving this year, I’m pretty sure the one that will make me laugh the hardest is Seth MacFarlane‘s feature directorial debut Ted.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a 35-year-old man who’s still best friends with his teddy bear, Ted (voiced and mo-capped by Macfarlane), after his childhood wish brought the stuffed animal to life.  Now the bear is a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking freeloader who’s creating tension with his girlfriend (Mila Kunis).  I’ve spoken to a few people that have seen the film and they’re all ravings.  In addition, Wahlberg previously told me that it’s incredibly offensive.   For more on the film, check out this red-band trailer.  I promise you’ll laugh out loud.

Anyway, while walking around at CinemaCon this morning, I came across the first theater standee for Ted.  While some standees push a photoshopped cast, I love the way Universal is selling the rating by having Ted hold the sign.  For the average moviegoer who knows nothing about Ted, I think this standee is perfect.  Hit the jump to check it out and look for our continuing coverage from CinemaCon all week.

TOP 5: THE AVENGERS Set Visit, TOTAL RECALL Trailer, AMERICAN REUNION Interviews, TED Trailer and Images, New PROMETHEUS Images

collider-top-5-slice

I feel compelled this week to use the Top 5 opening paragraph to ask our readers a moderately sized favor: if you have any interest whatsoever in the American horror genre and its future, please do your best to find a way to catch The Cabin in the Woods in theaters when it officially opens next weekend. I’m not asking this as a way of manufacturing some hyperbolic scenario in which the success or failure of said film will literally make or break the genre as we know it. Rather, I’m hoping to use it as a reminder that opening weekend box office dollars are one of the best ways that a moviegoer can have his/her voice heard by the film industry’s powers that be. If you’re tired of remakes of remakes and reboots of those remakes, then do your best to financially support something that isn’t afraid to turn genre conventions on their respective heads. Now, all favors aside…

Waiting on the other side of the Top 5 jump this week is a recap of our visit to the set of The Avengers, the first Total Recall trailer, video interviews with the cast of American Reunion, the first trailer/images from Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted, and a batch of new images from Prometheus. You know the drill, a brief recap and link to each of the above awaits…

Trailer for Seth MacFarlane’s TED Starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis

The green-band trailer for Ted has gone online.  Directed by Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), the movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a 35-year-old man who’s still best friends with his teddy bear, Ted (voiced and mo-capped by Macfarlane), after his childhood wish brought the stuffed animal to life.  Now the bear is a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking freeloader who’s creating tension between the guy and the guy’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis).  Fans of Macfarlane’s TV shows will note the familiar markers: a Peter Griffin voice for Ted (to the point where it’s kind of distracting), and everyone in the world naturally accepting a supernatural character.  I really enjoyed the red-band trailer (I can’t get the “Thunder Song” out of my head), and while this new one isn’t quite as good, there’s a great joke near the end.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Joel McHale and Giovanni RibisiTed opens July 13th.

First Red Band Trailer and Images from Seth MacFarlane’s TED

The first trailer and a batch of images from Seth MacFarlane‘s feature directorial debut Ted have gone online. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a grown man whose childhood wish that his teddy bear would come to life suddenly comes true. The catch is that the bear (played by Macfarlane using motion-capture) turns out to be a swearing, pot-smoking wreck. The trailer is pretty fantastic, especially since it’s red band. Wahlberg lets his “fuck”-laden Boston accent fly, and he and Ted look to have some incredibly entertaining chemistry. The bear is the most adorable foul-mouthed, dirty-minded stuffed animal you’ll ever come across and I’m kind of in love with him.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and images. The film also stars Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, Giovanni Ribisi and the voice of MacFarlane as Ted. Ted opens July 13th.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut Ted opens this summer, and we now have our look at the first poster.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a grown man whose childhood wish that his teddy bear would come to life suddenly comes true. The bear (played by Macfarlane using motion-capture) turns out to be a swearing, pot-smoking wreck who ruins Wahlberg’s life.  The film is apparently pretty insane (Wahlberg previously told Steve that it’s incredibly offensive), with Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, and Giovanni Ribisi rounding out the cast.  Macfarlane and Wahlberg premiered the first footage from the pic this past weekend at the SXSW Film Festival and handed out the first poster to festivalgoers.  We got our hands on one and it’s now included after the jump for your viewing pleasure. As you’ll see, it very much hints at the irreverent tone that’s sure to be on full-display.

Hit the jump to take a gander. A trailer debut for the film should be on the way soon. Ted opens July 13th.

Watch JOHN CARTER and WALL-E Director Andrew Stanton’s TED Talk

Every year, TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) hosts conferences that invite speakers to give talks on a variety of subjects with the moniker “ideas worth spreading.” Past TED Talk attendees include Bill Gates, Malcolm Gladwell, Bill Clinton, and J.J. Abrams, and we’ve even seen a fictional TED talk featuring Guy Pearce from the future by way of the viral campaign for Prometheus. This year director Andrew Stanton was given the stage, and his full talk is now available online for your viewing pleasure.

Stanton is a Pixar regular with screenwriting credits on all three Toy Story movies, and he personally helmed Finding Nemo and the magnificent Wall-E. He recently tried his hand at live-action with John Carter, which opens this Friday, and his TED talk entitled “My Life In Story, Backwards” focuses on storytelling. He opens the session with a pretty great joke, and proceeds to tell his life story in reverse. It’s a fascinating watch from a truly talented storyteller, and it’s definitely worth your time. Watch PROMETHEUS’ Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) Give a TED Talk from 2023

TED Talks certainly has a high opinion of itself.  They absolutely earned that opinion, but they think they’re going all the way to 2023.  Through TED magic, they’ve managed to bring us a clip of a TED Talk from Peter Weyland, who is played by Guy Pearce in Ridley Scott‘s upcoming sci-fi film, Prometheus. It’s a clever and captivating piece of viral marketing, and it makes me want a spin-off featuring just Weyland.  Pearce is hypnotic as the ambitious, eloquent, and somewhat terrifying CEO.  His monologue also reveals some important details about the film: 1) His TED talk takes place at least a few years before Prometheus since Weyland mentions that they’ll soon have human-looking androids (Michael Fassbender‘s character is an android); and 2) The thinking behind the man who will send the spaceship Prometheus on its journey.  The speech ends with a line that gave me chills and which I won’t spoil here. One additional note: this appears to be the beginning of a viral/ARG. Click here to go to the Weyland Industries website.

Hit the jump to check out the TED Talk from 2023.  Prometheus also stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, and Idris Elba.  The film opens in 3D on June 8th.

Opening tomorrow is director Baltasar Kormákur’s crime thriller Contraband. Set in the world of international smuggling, the film stars Mark Wahlberg as a man trying to escape his days as a criminal. When his brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) botches a deal, Wahlberg’s character must settle his brother-in-law’s debt in order to keep him safe from a drug boss (Giovanni Ribisi).  The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, J.K. Simmons, and Diego Luna.

Last week I was able to get on the phone with Wahlberg for an exclusive interview.  During our wide ranging conversation, we talked about the New England Patriots playoff chances (we’re both from New England), how he got involved in Contraband, the action scenes, how he prepares for his roles, and what it was like to film on a real ship.  In addition, with Wahlberg involved in so many other projects, he talked about The Fighter sequel, the Entourage movie, working with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell again in Three Mississippi, The Departed sequel, Michael Bay‘s Pain and Gain, Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted, the untitled Basketball movie with Justin Bieber, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to the interview.

Giovanni Ribisi Talks CONTRABAND and Seth MacFarlane’s TED

by Heather Warburton    Posted: January 11th, 2012 at 8:20 am

Set in New Orleans, Contraband is Mark Whalberg’s new thriller about smuggling on container ships. He plays a blue-collar family man who’s sworn off his former life of crime, until his brother-in-law botches a drug deal and needs his help in order to repay the debt. Whalberg agrees to do one last job, running contraband from Panama on a container ship. Kate Beckinsale plays Whalberg’s wife, Ben Foster his best friend and business partner, and Giovanni Ribisi plays a New Orleans drug runner who is barely recognizable and eerily convincing.

During our one-on-one interview, we talk about how he created the accent, the prison documentaries he watched to get into the role, as well a bit about the upcoming Seth McFarlane movie Ted. Hit the jump for the full interview.

Mark Wahlberg Talks Seth MacFarlane’s TED and Untitled Basketball Movie with Justin Bieber

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 7th, 2012 at 11:12 am

The other day, we brought you updates from Mark Wahlberg on a sequel to The Fighter, the Entourage movie, and Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain.  As noted at the time, Wahlberg is a very busy guy. As such, during his interview with Steve regarding his upcoming crime thriller Contraband, the actor/producer talked extensively about a number of projects.  Today we’re bringing you what he had to say about starring in Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut Ted, and his basketball movie starring Justin Bieber (including a fantastically awesome title for the latter).  Hit the jump to see what Wahlberg had to say about the two projects.

Joel McHale Talks SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, COMMUNITY, Seth MacFarlane’s TED, More

In Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, Joel McHale plays Wilbur, a famous spy-hunting television reporter who is married to retired secret agent Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba). The thing is, neither him nor his twin step kids (Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook) know about Marissa’s past. But, when the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet, Marissa is called back into action and the kids learn that their boring stepmom was once a top agent. Thrust into action, the world’s most competitive 10-year-olds quickly learn to put their bickering aside and make use of some mind-blowing gadgets to help save the world.

At the film’s press day, Joel McHale talked about being one of the busiest guys in show business, juggling filming Spy Kids 4 with his NBC comedy Community and E!’s The Soup, how playing Jessica Alba’s husband felt like winning a prize in an auction, and how he’s not much of a practical joker. He also gave a little preview of what’s to come for fans of Community, and talked about being directed by Seth MacFarlane for Ted and acting with Steve Martin for The Big Year. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
