On the MTV supernatural drama series Teen Wolf, based on the ‘80s film starring Michael J. Fox, actor Dylan O’Brien plays Stiles Stilinski, the funny best friend of newly turned werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), whose loyalty makes him an inquisitive detective when it comes to his friend’s mysterious transformation. Previously known for his body of work in the comedic YouTube videos that he created, directed and starred in, the newcomer is already off to a great start, with roles in the independent feature High Road, directed by Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder Matt Walsh, and most recently in the romantic dramedy The First Time, centered on the first weekend of a fledgling romance between two high school kids.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Dylan O’Brien talked about his accidental career as an actor, how he got cast as Stiles on Teen Wolf, the challenge of making his character funny and not annoying, what his favorite episodes of the season are, and that he hopes to get to see Stiles as a werewolf, even if it’s in a dream sequence. He also talked about how awesome the experience of making The First Time was, being thrown into the improvisational deep-end for High Road, and how he hopes to continue to work with good filmmakers on good projects, for the remainder of his acting career. In MTV’s new re-imagining of Teen Wolf, from show creator/executive producer Jeff Davis and director/co-executive producer Russell Mulcahy, takes the larger story of the transformation that every teenager goes through as they come of age and figure out who they are, and tells it with the added ingredient of werewolves. With a forbidden love story and snarling monsters, the drama follows newly bitten werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey). Having been turned by Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) after his best friend Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) encourages him to go out into the woods at night in search for a dead body, Scott becomes faster and stronger, making him the arch rival of the lacrosse team’s star Jackson Whittemore (Colton Haynes) and bringing him to the attention of popular girl Lydia Martin (Holland Roden). And, when mysterious new girl Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) shows up in town, Scott learns a secret about her family that could put an end to their romance before it really even gets started.
At the show’s press day, co-stars Tyler Hoechlin, Colton Haynes and Holland Roden talked to Collider for this exclusive interview about how they got involved with the series, getting to collaborate on the development of their characters, what this take on werewolves is, and how they evolved over the course of Season 1. As the creator and executive producer of the MTV series Teen Wolf, Jeff Davis has developed a re-imagining of the iconic ‘80s film that is darker, sexier and edgier than the original. When asked if he would be interested in doing something with Teen Wolf, the Criminal Minds creator/executive producer shared his vision for the series with MTV executives who were immediately drawn to his desire to make a thriller with comedic overtones with a tone more similar to The Lost Boys than the camp that people are familiar with. Once the show was a go, Jeff Davis lined up Russell Mulcahy, who added his background as a horror director to the project. Now, with a good-looking cast of young actors, great stories that are creepy and scary, and cool effects and make-up, they have all the makings of a hit for the network.
At the show’s press day, Jeff Davis and Russell Mulcahy talked to Collider in this exclusive interview about bringing this show to life for MTV, how important it was to establish the look of the werewolves, developing their werewolf mythology, the fact that Season 1 will have many twists and turns, all the behind the scenes features they already have planned for the DVD release, and their excitement to take the series to Comic-Con in San Diego. Both MTV and TNT teased eager Comic-Con attendees with glimpses at new television programs Teen Wolf (MTV) and Falling Skies (TNT). Ironically both panels were back to back and both either draw from familiar source material, Teen Wolf being a re-envisioning of the Michael J. Fox movie, and Falling Skies using themes akin to War of the Worlds and other comparable alien invasion epics. Did the sneak peeks serve anything fresh to audiences with their bite size snippets, or were they awkward rehashes of contrived stories? Hit the jump to find out.

THR reports that MTV is taking the 1985 Michael J. Fox comedy Teen Wolf and turning it into a “dramatic thriller with a buddy-comedy element at the center and a romantic plot line,” and four actors have been cast in the lead roles. Tyler Posey (Brothers & Sisters) will play Scott McCall, a dorky high-school student who gets a rush of new powers, including the ability to attract girls, after a wolf attack; Dylan O’Brien plays Scott’s best friend, “who is initially dismissive of Scott’s theory that he was bitten by a wolf but then begins research on human-werewolf transformation.” Crystal Reed is the love interest and Tyler Hoechlin (7th Heaven) is, “a handsome local boy who in fact is a vicious and predatory werewolf capable of great harm. I have very little hope for this project because nowhere in THR’s article did I read any mention of a werewolf playing basketball.

Perhaps realizing that a steady diet of vapid teen reality shows is bound to make any TV network bulimic in time, MTV announced that they would begin dabbling in scripted series earlier this year. First up? A reboot of the 1985 classic “Teen Wolf” starring Michael J. Fox. As announced, the MTV series would give the film a “contemporary” spin incorporating horror elements, werewolf mythology and a sweeping love story… so basically “Twilight” without the good hair. After checking out the pilot script the network today revealed that they have given “Teen Wolf” an initial pilot presentation order. Details after the jump.
It was only a matter of time really. With all the classic 1980s properties that are currently on their way to your local theatre, you had to suspect that it wouldn’t be long before someone thought of “Teen Wolf”. The 1985 comedy starred Michael J Fox as a teenager who discovers that he is a werewolf – and that he is excellent at channeling John Travolta. Moviehole is reporting that Warner Brothers (who picked up the rights to the original a few years back) is currently looking for writers for a “Teen Wolf” remake – though they’re apparently not too sure “which way they’re going to go” with the project. Really?? How many ways can you go with a script about a hairy teenager who is really good at basketball? Oh wait. That sounds sort of like “High School Musical”, doesn’t it? So I guess they do have some sorting out to do before they settle on a final concept then.
