This past week brought us a story that is near and dear to me. While I briefly give my own thoughts regarding DC Comics’ Watchmen prequel comic series after the jump, I want to use the “Top 5′s” opening paragraph space to invite readers to voice/type their own opinions on the announcement in the comments section. As a fervent fan of the series, I’m always interested to hear fellow fans’ take on Watchmen adaptations, prequels, and the like. So, with that said, what do you think? Does the creative talent involved interest you? Is it the best idea ever? The worst? Somewhere in between? Sound off in the comments.

In addition to DC’s Before Watchmen announcement, this installment of the “Top 5″ includes interviews with the cast and director of superhero/found-footage pic Chronicle, a “What If?” look at a 16-Bit Breaking Bad RPG, ten things to know about Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, and Sundance 2012 video interviews with Bradley Cooper, Paul Dano and more. A brief recap and link to each follows after the jump.

Teresa Palmer WISH YOU WERE HERE and WARM BODIES interview slice

Kieran Darcy-Smith’s debut feature, Wish You Were Here, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  Starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price and Antony Starr, the film is about four friends (two couples) who embark on a carefree holiday in Cambodia, but only three of them return home.  As the film unfolds, we start to learn more about what happened on the trip and how one of them might know more than they’re letting on.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Palmer for an exclusive interview.  During our extended conversation we talked about what it means to premiere at Sundance, how the project came together, what the film is about and who she plays, filming in Cambodia, and how the project changed during the writing process.  In addition, we talked about karaoke, video games, and director Jonathan Levine‘s Warm Bodies.  Hit the jump to watch.

I have to say that I can’t wait to check out Steven Soderbergh‘s actioner Haywire. Everything I’ve seen from it thus far has looked great and the positivity pouring out from early reviews only supports my belief that the entire pic will deliver. Whether it be the stellar cast, the proclaimed breakout performance from Gina Carano, or Soderbergh’s top-notch action sequences, I fully expect to be talking about Haywire right here again next week in a little “Before & After” discussion. In the meantime…

…This week’s “Top 5″ brings you some new details regarding the long-gestating Star Wars live-action television series, Contraband interviews with Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, and more, the first official images from Jonathan Levine‘s (50/50) Warm Bodies, a “Cinemath” feature that analyzes the 2011 box office, and all of our coverage from the 2011 Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour. Alice Eve Lands Role in STAR TREK 2

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 30th, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Last week we reported that J.J. Abrams’ 3D sequel to 2009’s Star Trek had cemented a May 2013 release date, and today word comes that Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) has joined the cast. Variety reports that Eve has landed an unspecified role in the follow-up that’s believed to be new to the canon. The actress apparently beat out Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) for the role. Abrams returns to the director’s seat with most of the original cast expected to return. Benicio Del Toro has been cast as the villain, though the nature of his role is shrouded in secrecy. Hit the jump for more, including the possibility of a second villain added into the fold.

First Promo Image and Synopsis for WARM BODIES Starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 am

Steve is over at the American Film Market where various studios are trying to sell the international rights to their upcoming films.  One of the films being sold is Jonathan Levine‘s zombie love story Warm Bodies, and Steve snapped a photo of the promo image.  The movie stars Nicholas Hoult as “R”, a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories.  I got to visit the set last week and while I’m embargoed like crazy, I can say the movie looks like an interesting spin on the genre.  Judging by this image, it looks like Summit Entertainment is going to play up the romance aspect (the movie also has horror and comedy) and making it look like zombie Twilight.  That’s a risky bet since I don’t think those audiences are going to cross-over, but it’s still early in the game and remember: this is trying to sell international studios, not the public.

Hit the jump to check out the promo image.  The film also stars Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, and Dave FrancoWarm Bodies opens August 10, 2012. [Update: We've updated the article with a full, comprehensive synopsis as well as a high resolution version of the image]

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT Blu-ray Review

Take Me Home Tonight wasn’t so much released in 2011, it was put out of its misery in 2011. Tonight was made in 2007, when Topher Grace was coming off of Spider-Man 3, and when Dan Fogler was supposed to break into the mainstream. Fogler hasn’t yet, but both female leads Anna Farris and Teresa Palmer are still working (this could have been a good year for Palmer if I am Number Four was any good). They all star in an 80’s-set comedy where in one night they party together, and try to figure out their lives. Our review of the Take Me Home Tonight Blu-ray is after the jump.

Liam Hemsworth Goes AWOL; Teresa Palmer, Austin Stowell, and Aimee Teegarden Also in Talks to Join

Liam Hemsworth, who is currently filming The Hunger Games, has signed on for the Vietnam-era indie flick, AWOL. Currently, Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Austin Stowell (Puncture) and Aimee Teegarden (Scream 4) are in negotiations, while Chris Lowell (Up in the Air) and Max Adler (Glee) are in talks to co-star in the pic as well. Hemsworth will star as the best friend and comrade-in-arms to Stowell, whose stateside girlfriend (Teegarden) dumps him. Together, they go AWOL and return to their Michigan hometown to win her back. Sounding like less of a war movie and more of a wartime love story, AWOL is set amidst the anti-war counterculture movement at the University of Michigan. Danny Mooney’s directorial debut is slated to start production in Ann Arbor in mid-July. Hit the jump for more info on the principal actors’ upcoming projects.

I AM NUMBER FOUR Blu-ray Review

Alex-Pettyfer-I-Am-Number-Four-movie-image-slice-21

There are filmmakers without much personal style or perceptible storytelling interests. Not every director is an auteur – nor should directors be harshly judged for simply delivering something that’s just entertaining (entertaining is hard enough) – but director D.J. Caruso (Suburbia, Eagle Eye) is a workman to a fault. That in mind, when you partner him with three writers who have specialized in television, and with the open-ended storytelling that comes from adapting a series of books, you get a non-film like I Am Number Four, featuring non-stars Alex Pettyfer, Teresa Palmer and Dianna Argon. It’s not terrible, but it feels more like a pilot than a movie. My review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Teresa Palmer in Talks to Co-Star with Nicholas Hoult in Zombie Love Story WARM BODIES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 29th, 2011 at 7:53 am

teresa-palmer-slice-01

Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) is in talks to star alongside Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) in Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’s upcoming novel Warm Bodies.  Per Heat Vision, the story is described as a cross between Shaun of the Dead (yay!) and Twilight (nay!) and “follows an existentially tormented zombie named R that begins an unlikely friendship with the human girlfriend (Palmer) of one of his victims. The blossoming relationship starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies and maybe the whole lifeless world.”  Palmer’s character is the daughter of one of the “military leaders who is tiring of a life of constantly fighting off zombie attacks.”

Palmer recently co-starred in back-to-back duds with I Am Number Four and Take Me Home Tonight, but I don’t think the short-comings of those films are her fault.  She showed she can be a bad-ass in I Am Number Four and she demonstrated charm in TMHT, so it’s really a matter of finding the right project for her talents.  Perhaps Warm Bodies will be it.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Universal Nabs Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES; Blake Lively and Teresa Palmer Join Olivia Wilde In Casting Consideration

After winning a bidding war with two other unnamed studios, Universal Pictures has landed domestic distribution rights to Oliver Stone’s adaptation of the Don Winslow novel Savages. Slated to begin shooting this June, Savages casting is still a bit of an open book as Aaron Johnson, Benicio del Toro, and Taylor Kitsch have all been offered roles in the film but are still in negotiations. Stone’s female lead is currently vacant as well with Jennifer Lawrence having to end talks after being cast in Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games.

According to Variety, both Blake Lively and Teresa Palmer have read for the part and join Olivia Wilde as potential candidates to make a turn as “O.” In Winslow’s novel, “O” is a “free-spirited friend” of Laguna Beach pot dealers, Ben and Chon. As the story goes, the dealers’ life of stoned luxury takes an unexpected turn when the Baja drug cartel kidnaps “O” in an attempt to coerce the pair to sell their product through them. For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis for Winslow’s novel.

Teresa Palmer and Topher Grace Exclusive Video Interview TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT

Topher Grace and Teresa Palmer Interview TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT slice

Opening this weekend is director Michael Dowse’s 80’s based comedy Take Me Home Tonight starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, Chris Pratt, Michelle Trachtenberg, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin.  The film centers on a recent MIT grad (Grace) who gets invited, along with his best friend (Fogler) and twin sister (Faris), to an epic, end-of-summer 1988 party by his high-school crush (Palmer).  For more on the film, you can watch 11 clips here.

Anyway, I recently got to interview Grace & Palmer and after the jump you can watch a very silly conversation with the two stars.  The reason I say silly is that before walking in the room, I decided to grab a bright pink wig out of the prop box and wear it on camera.  What I didn’t count on was how it would become a conversation starter and dominate the interview.  Out of all the interviews I’ve done over the last few years, this was completely unique.  Besides talking about my wig, we also discussed making the film, the soundtrack, and a lot more:

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 4th, 2011 at 7:21 am

Do you remember the 80s?  Of course you do.  Everyone remembers the 80s even if you didn’t live through them.  It was pop-art made flesh and then made neon.  There were bright colors, exuberant clothes, and if your song didn’t feature at least one synthesizer, then it wasn’t worth listening to it.  We’ve been to the 80s and it’s tough to find a reason to go back.  Take Me Home Tonight certainly can’t find one and it drowns its affable leads and their charming performances in a sea of nostalgia and iconography.

A couple week ago, I got the chance to interview Topher Grace and Teresa Palmer about their new movie Take Me Home Tonight.  The two were on a press tour promoting the film and I got to speak with them at Whiskey Park inside the Midtown W. Hotel in Atlanta.  Grace and Palmer have terrific chemistry in the film and I got to see that chemistry in person.  They spoke about taking the film around the country, sang each other’s praises, revealed some of the deleted scenes that will be on the Blu-ray, and reflected fondly about the music video where they spoofed 80s movies.  Take Me Home Tonight also marks Grace’s first film as a producer and I asked him what he had learned from the experience.

Check Out a Behind the Scenes Featurette for TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 24th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

take_me_home_tonight_movie_slice_01

A behind the scenes featurette for the upcoming comedy Take Me Home Tonight has landed online. Directed by Michael Dowse, the film stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, and Chris Pratt. The comedy is set in 1988 and features a recent MIT grad (Grace) who makes a move on his high school crush (Palmer), steals a car, and embarks on numerous other misadventures all in the course of one night. While it very well may have a lot more going for it, I plan on catching the film for no other reason than its nostalgia-ridden 80s soundtrack. Here’s to hoping A-ha’s classic “Take on Me” makes an appearance.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette. Take Me Home Tonight hits theaters next week on March 4th.

We’ve been provided with 11 movie clips from director Michael Dowse’s Take Me Home Tonight.  The 80’s based comedy stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, Chris Pratt, Michelle Trachtenberg, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin.  The film centers on a recent MIT grad (Grace) who gets invited, along with his best friend (Fogler) and twin sister (Faris), to an epic, end-of-summer 1988 party by his high-school crush (Palmer).  I caught a screening and while the film is by no means perfect, I laughed a lot.  If you’re a fan of movies from the 80’s, it’s definitely worth seeing.  Also, the soundtrack is great.  Hit the jump for the clips:
