Martin Scorsese is back on to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio for a fifth time, and will collaborate on the drama The Wolf of Wall Street.  A little over a year ago, we reported that the two were set to make the film and have it be Scorsese’s follow up to Hugo, but Scorsese dropped off the project in May.   Now Deadline reports that Scorsese is back on board, and shooting is set to begin in August in New York.  The story is based on “Jordan Belfort‘s memoir of his days as a hard partying, drug addicted stockbroker who was indicted in 1998 for security fraud and money laundering and served a 22-month federal prison stretch.”  Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter wrote the script, and he’ll polish it up before the movie goes into production.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE Season One Blu-ray Review

by Rob Vaux    Posted: January 2nd, 2012 at 7:00 am

HBO’s Boardwalk Empire follows in a long line of prestige series produced by the cable network, which actually works against it a little bit. It’s hard to get excited about yet another must-see series from them, especially after the infamous letdown of The Sopranos finale and the way the network botched other great shows like Deadwood and Carnivale.  One hopes, however, that those harsh lessons have been well-learned, and with Boardwalk Empire now a bona fide hit, HBO has a chance to capitalize on the very high standard that the first season sets. The new Blu-ray collection does the show justice, and makes an exquisite New Year’s present for faithful fans. Hit the jump for my full review of the first season of Boardwalk Empire on Blu-ray.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to reteam for a biopic of Irish crime boss Whitey Bulger.  The project hasn’t been officially announced, but Damon is playing Bulger, Affleck is directing, and Terrence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) is writing the script.  Affleck and Damon were previously planning to team up for The Trade, a true-life story about wife-swapping Yankees players, but legal complications have held up the project.  Damon says the movie is still in development, but it will come after the Bulger biopic.

Hit the jump for more on Bulger, the direction the movie might take, and an update on Damon’s recently-announced directorial debut. [Update: More details have been revealed about the project including new casting.  Hit the jump for more.]

We’re now less than a month away from the September 19th premiere of HBO’s highly anticipated period drama series Boardwalk Empire so if you haven’t been convinced by the two trailers that have been released so far, then maybe this new video will do the job. HBO has just released a 14-minute featurette taking you behind the scenes of the new series complete with interviews and commentary from series creator/writer Terrence Winter, pilot director Martin Scorsese, actors Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon and many more. I’ll let the featurette speak for itself below, but Boardwalk Empire’s September 19th premiere on HBO can’t come soon enough.

We knew that the Martin Scorsese-produced Prohibition-era gangster series Boardwalk Empire would premiere this fall, but HBO has set the precise date/time of September 19th at 9:00.  Steve Buscemi stars as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, “the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City… equal parts politician and gangster.”  Scorsese will direct the pilot, written by series creator Terrence Winter (The Sopranos).  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio May Re-Team for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Director Ridley Scott is looking to re-team with an actor, and it’s not Robin Hood/Body of Lies/American Gangster/A Good Year/Gladiator star Russell Crowe!  Leonardo DiCaprio has long been attached to an adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s 2008 memoir The Wolf of Wall Street, which was to be directed by Martin Scorsese.  When production stalled, the pair made Shutter Island instead.

Now Deadline reports that Ridley Scott is in early negotiations to step in to direct his non-Crowe Body of Lies thespian from a script by Terrence Winter (The Sopranos), which will retell Belfort’s story of stockbroker excess in the 1990s.  More after the jump:

New Trailer: HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE from Martin Scorsese and SOPRANOS Writer Terrence Winter

I love that HBO will center a series around Prohibition-era gangsters. I love that Martin Scrosese is directing television pilots.  I love that Steve Buscemi will anchor a weekly series.  I am ecstatic that the Fall 2010 series Boardwalk Empire will provide all three of these things at once, and this trailer only fans the flame.

Buscemi stars as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, “the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City… equal parts politician and gangster.”  Terrence Winter (The Sopranos) serves as creator, while Scorsese is credited as producer alongside his pilot-directing gig.  Check out the trailer after the jump.

First Teaser Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Upcoming HBO Show BOARDWALK EMPIRE

by Keith Demko    Posted: January 14th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Along with visiting Shutter Island, where we will all finally get to go Feb. 19, Martin Scorsese has directed the pilot for the upcoming HBO show Boardwalk Empire, and you get the sense from the first teaser trailer that he’s right at home again on the seedy turf of the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

The series, which will be written at least in part by The Sopranos veteran Terrence Winter, chronicles the rise of the New Jersey city in the 1920s, and features a cast that should give Scorsese and the other directors plenty of talent to work with. Steve Buscemi stars as Nucky Thompson, a character based on Enoch “Nucky” Johnson, the boss of the Republican political machine that ruled the realm. Gretchen Mol will play a showgirl involved with Nucky, and The Wire fans should note that Omar himself, Michael K. Williams, is in the cast too (and, we’d have to imagine, will show himself as man not to be fucked with.)

Hit the jump to see the teaser trailer, and let us know if you think this looks like something worthy of Scorsese’s – and your – time.  Boardwalk Empire premieres on HBO this fall.
