It’s been almost twenty years since Disney brought Victor Hugo’s novel to the big screen in animated form with The Hunchback of Notre Dame.  Now, the same tale will be told with a different spin on the small screen in ABC’s limited event series, Esmeralda.  The network is developing the period drama will views the classic story through the eyes of the gypsy, Esmeralda.  Though the news comes via Deadline, there are no details as to the take on the story, except to say that it will be scripted by Evan Daugherty, who turned in the revisionist take on Snow White and the Huntsman and is attached to pen drafts to such high-profile features as Divergent, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe 3.  Now this is complete speculation on my part, but Once Upon a Time fans might want to keep an eye out for potential cross-over between the fantasy series and the limited Esmeralda series.  Stranger things have happened.

Today, the third Men in Black movie hits theaters.  Barry Sonnenfeld returns as director, and the story finds Will Smith’s Agent J traveling back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K.  Josh Brolin plays a younger version of Jones’ character, and does an incredible job; you’ll be totally convinced you’re watching a young Tommy Lee Jones.  During my interview with Brolin, we talked about his awesome performance, his first day on set, favorite movies, Fahrenheit 451, and future projects like Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad, Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day, Spike Lee‘s Oldboy, and Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Hit the jump to watch the interview.  Men in Black 3 also stars Jemaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson. In addition, make-up effects artist Rick Baker returns to the franchise and you can see some of his creature work here.  Click on the corresponding links for my conversations with Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith director Barry Sonnenfeld.  For more on the film, here’s all our previous coverage.

Kieran and Michele Mulroney are the husband and wife writing team behind Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Tackling the task of writing a sequel and making it more compelling than the original was a challenge, but one that they had a lot of fun with.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, Kieran and Michele Mulroney talked about the challenges that come with writing a sequel when you didn’t write the first film, the changes that were made throughout the process of developing the story, how they came up with the backstory for Moriarty, even though they decided to cut it out of the script, and getting to use efficient warfare and more modern weapons. They also talked about currently working on adapting the Victor Hugo classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with Josh Brolin attached to star and produce, wanting to remain faithful to the story while doing some new things with the character of Quasimodo, and also adapting the young adult novel Matched, which is set in the future. At the press junket for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Collider got the opportunity to chat with husband and wife writing team, Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who are the screenwriters of the film. While we will run that portion of the interview, closer to the film’s December 16th release, we did want to share what they had to say about the two projects they’re currently developing, simultaneously.

Much like the daunting task of adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for the big screen, Kieran and Michele Mulroney are currently working on adapting the Victor Hugo classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with Josh Brolin attached to star and produce. Wanting to remain faithful to the story while doing some new things with the character of Quasimodo, the two are having fun with the process. At the same time, they are adapting the young adult novel Matched, which is set in the future. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Josh Brolin and Tim Burton Teaming Up for THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

It looks like Tim Burton may actually be making a film without Johnny Depp in the near future. The Alice in Wonderland director is in the early stages of developing a film version of Victor Hugo’s classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Josh Brolin set to produce and star. Heat Vision reports that the project is in the very early stages, with Burton waiting on a script to officially sign on for the flick.

Warner Bros. has tapped Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) to adapt Hugo’s 1831 novel. Hunchback tells the story of a deformed bell-ringer in Notre Dame who tragically falls in love with a gypsy. Burton has a pretty full plate, as he’s currently prepping Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp, but if he likes the script that comes in he could tackle this next. Brolin recently signed on to Cogan’s Trade with Brad Pitt and is looking to direct and star in Pitz & Joe. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Hugo’s novel.

Paramount Picks up Pitch for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN-Style Re-telling of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

by     Posted 3 years, 286 days ago

Paramount Pictures has bought an original pitch from screenwriters Willie Block and Jake Emanuel.  According to Risky Bussiness, “The high-concept action-adventure story mixes original ideas with the framework of the traditional Hunchback of Notre Dame story. Though said to be in the vein of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, its plotline is being kept secret by producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian.”  This purchase should help my pitch for The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter done in the style of 300.

Block and Emanuel first gained attention because of their action-comedy spec script, Fuck You I Win which I’m sure is much more intelligent than the title makes it sound.  This bodes well for my spec script, Are You Fucking Kidding Me.
