We recently had the exclusive opportunity to talk to director Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre) for his segment “L is for Libido” in the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.  The film’s 26 different directors spoke to 26 different sites about their respective segments; you can read up on the other 25 here.  Tjahjanto’s segment dealt with the themes of sexual arousal and perversion in perhaps the most fucked up short of the entire collection and one that “will never be seen by [his] parents.”  You can check out the green-band and red-band trailers for the film to familiarize yourself.

The trailer for the horror anthology ABCs of Death has gone online.  The film boasts 26 short films from a number of different directors who were assigned a letter and given free reign to tell a story about death using a word that begins with said letter.  Judging by this trailer, the results range from inventive and eye-catching to twisted and graphic.  We’ve previously seen the terrifyingly great claymation short T Is for Toilet, so hopefully the other shorts are just as fun.  Either way, ABCs of Death is likely a must-see for fans of the horror genre.

V/H/S is the latest release to capitalize on the found-footage craze. The anthology film is structured around a group of criminals who are hired to break in to a desolate house and retrieve a mysterious videotape. When they arrive at the house they find the owner dead in his recliner, facing a stack of TVs and a massive pile of videotapes. In order to locate the correct video they begin watching the tapes one by one, each being a segment in the film. These shorts include new interpretations on a monster, a masked stalker, a killer in the woods, a ghost story and some good ol’ Satanists; effectively providing a snapshot of the horror genre. V/H/S is directed by Adam Wingard, Ti West, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg, and newcomers Radio Silence.

During the press conference for the film, I was able to sit down for a one on one phone interview with writer Simon Barrett, who provided the script for the segment “The Sick Thing that Happened to Emily when she was Younger” and the wrap-around story “Tape 56”. During the interview we discussed his thoughts on the distant release scheduled for You’re Next, what we can expect from The ABCs of Death, and what’s wrong with studio horror today. Last month, Fantastic Fest announced the first-wave of movies included in their line-up.  Today, they’ve announced Wave Two, and there’s even more greatness on the way.  The big name additions are Rian Johnson‘s Looper, the horror anthology The ABCs of Death, and the Ethan Hawke horror flick Sinister.  While these are awesome films to have in the line-up and they’ll unquestionably pack the house, Fantastic Fest is all about finding the smaller genre flicks, and there are fifteen smaller movies in addition to the three I mentioned above.  Add that to that the 18 movies in the first wave, and there’s already 36 movies to discover.

Last week, the Toronto International Film Festival announced the movies playing in its Special Presentations and Galas programs.  Today, they’ve provided the line-up for their other programs including Midnight Madness.  This is where the more genre-oriented films come out to play, and can break out in a big way.  Last year’s TIFF Midnight Madness included the world premiere of The Raid, and the buzz never died down.  Judging by the line-up, this year’s Midnight Madness will have the same frenzy.  The line-up includes the horror short-film anthology The ABCs of Death, Seven Psychopaths (Martin McDonagh‘s follow up to In Bruges), Rob Zombie‘s The Lords of Salem, Don Coscarelli‘s John Dies at the End, and Pete Travis‘ Dredd.

The Alamo Drafthouse is currently running “The ABCs of Death”, a contest where the winner will receive $5,000 and get to handle the “T” of the death alphabet.  Collider reader Robert clued us in to the delightful claymation entry, T Is for Toilet.  The toilet seems fairly innocuous unless an alligator or some such pops up out of it.  But director Lee Hardcastle has found new horrific and hilarious ways to destroy those who mess with the porcelain throne.

Drafthouse Films is teaming with Timpson Films, Magnet Releasing, and 26 filmmakers to produce the horror anthology The ABCs of Death.  Each director will be assigned one letter of the alphabet to turn into a short film.  Some of the more notable talent involved Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Ti West (The House of the Devil), and Srdjan Sapsojevic (A Serbian Film).  The remaining confirmed are Angela Bettis, Ben Wheatley, Banjong Pisanthanakun, Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, Bruno Forzani and Héléne Cattet, Gadi Harel, Thomas Malling, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Simon Rumley, Tak Sakaguchi and Yuji Shimomura, Marcel Sarmiento, Timo Tjahjanto, Andrew Traucki, Jake West and Adam Wingard.  The plan is to fill one slot with the winner of a worldwide contest, reminiscent of how Eisener got his start as an amateur filmmaker who landed Hobo With a Shotgun in the fake trailers section of Grindhouse.

Production is scheduled for this June.  The plan is to complete filming exactly 6 months, 6 weeks, and 6 days later in January 2012.  Read quotes from the producers after the jump.
