I’m currently at the Sundance Film Festival, and while I’ll be seeing plenty of movies, I’ll only be seeing features.  Sadly, it’s the nature of the scheduling, but I’m glad to report that Sundance has put 12 of their 65 short films on YouTube.  Among the selections are Broken Night by Babel writer Guillermo Arriga, and the comedy The Apocalypse starring Martin Starr.  I’ve only watched a few of the shorts, and they’re all pretty dark and twisted, so if that’s your thing, these are worth twenty minutes of your day.

The aptly named The Apocalypse is looking more and more like The Avengers of comedies with each casting story.  Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, James Franco, and Craig Robinson are already set to star, with Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg making their directorial debut on the project.  Now Aziz Ansari has revealed that he’ll be appearing in the pic as well.  Moreover, Ansari said that everyone is basically playing themselves in the comedy.  The story concerns all the aforementioned actors showing up at James Franco’s house for a party, then the apocalypse starts happening.  Hit the jump for more.

The release dates for two films from filmmakers that you really like were announced tonight:

• The Weinstein Company will release Paul Thomas Anderson‘s religious drama The Master starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman on October 12, 2012
• Sony will release a comedy from Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill on June 14, 2013; it is currently listed as untitled, but may be the project we know as The Apocalypse, or perhaps Sausage Party.  [Update: The Playlist has confirmed that The Apocalypse, starring Rogen and Jay Baruchel, is opening on June 14, 2013]

Funnyman actor Seth Rogen is taking on hosting duties for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards, being held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica on February 25^th. To promote the gig, he spoke to members of the press about why he thought it seemed like a fun thing to do.

During the interview, Seth Rogen talked about being as nervous about flubbing or tipping while hosting as he is in any element of his life, that he’s been watching all of the nominated movies in preparation, the hosting advice he’s gotten from Judd Apatow, what films he responded to in 2011 (Take Shelter and Drive) and what he’s looking forward to this year (The Dark Knight Rises), the TV shows he enjoys watching (Breaking Bad, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation), and that Pineapple Express is his favorite film that he’s done. He also talked about how his directorial debut, The Apocalypse, is coming along, that he’d like to do a Kung Fu Panda 3, that he doesn’t know if there will ever be a Pineapple Express 2, and that he doesn’t think there’s any chance of there ever being a Freaks and Geeks movie. Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.
