With just days to go before the summer movie season blasts off with Iron Man 3, the domestic box office offered up another decidedly ‘meh’ moment. Paramount’s Pain & Gain was on top with a respectable $20 million while the new rom-com The Big Wedding badly underperformed. The real excitement came on the global market, where Iron Man 3 broke records with its international launch.

It’s been a long, cold, boring winter at the box office but here comes the sun! In just six days, the summer movie season will start with the release of Iron Man 3. As of Friday, the Marvel sequel had earned a reported $36.7 million from twelve international territories and should be well past $100 million by Monday. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Here in the US, we still have another week of mediocre numbers to wade through.
Taking pride of place on the first day of the pre-summer frame was Pain & Gain. From 3,277 locations on Friday, the Michael Bay feature earned an estimated $7.5 million towards what looks like a $20 million debut weekend. Of course that’s nowhere near what Bay realized with the Transformers franchise but, for this “low-budget” action comedy, it’s as good as Hollywood expected. The same cannot be said for The Big Wedding. The star-stuffed rom-com earned an estimated $2.5 million from 2,633 locations on Friday and should fall well under its weekend target of just $10 million. We’ll have full details tomorrow.

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for director Justin Zackham’s ensemble romantic comedy The Big Wedding. The film centers on a divorced couple (Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton) who are forced to pretend like they’re still married when their adopted son’s (Ben Barnes) deeply religious biological mother comes to town for his wedding. Though the cast boasts some actual talent, the way the movie is framed in this recent trailer almost plays like a parody, complete with cheesy voiceover, zany physical comedy, and The Romantics’ “What I Like About You.” The pic was previously scheduled for release last October before Lionsgate decided to push it to this spring.
Hit the jump to take a look at the new trailer. The film also stars Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace, and Robin Williams. The Big Wedding opens on October 26th.

The next year will include a new installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise with Texas Chainsaw 3D, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to action in a leading role with The Last Stand, three films involving Tyler Perry and, of course, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. One guess as to which film will be the biggest win for Lionsgate next year. Hit the jump to see the whole schedule with release dates, posters and synopses.

The first trailer and poster for the ensemble romantic comedy The Big Wedding have been released. The film centers on a divorced couple (Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton) who are forced to pretend like they’re still married when their adopted son’s (Ben Barnes) deeply religious biological mother comes to town for his wedding. Zaniness ensues. Though the involvement of Katherine Heigl puts this one immediately on iffy ground, the highlight of the trailer is the chemistry between De Niro and Keaton. If the film focuses mainly on their relationship, we might be in for a fairly amusing rom-com. That said, the clip definitely plays up the farcical tone and “wacky antics” that occur when everything goes awry, so I’m not exactly holding my breath.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Directed by Justin Zackham, the film also stars Amanda Seyfried, Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace, and Robin Williams. The Big Wedding opens on October 26th.

Kyle Bornheimer has emerged as a reliably charming comedic performer over the past couple years. After a slew of TV guest spots, my first long-term introduction was in Worst Week, a remake of a British series about the farce-filled days leading up to a couple’s wedding. The character was a nice showcase for Bornheimer’s skills, and so he’s returning to that well for two new feature projects, albeit in less prominent roles. The first is Bachelorette, and indie comedy led by Kirsten Dunst. The second is The Big Wedding, an ensemble comedy featuring the likes of Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried, Robin Williams, Ben Barnes, and Topher Grace.
More on both projects after the jump.

If you’ll indulge me, I’d like to catch up to a few of the release dates announced over the last week. My primary motivation: Margaret finally has an official release date! Kenneth Lonergan was greeted with critical acclaim for his directorial debut You Can Count on Me in 2000, enough to guarantee the director final cut on his follow-up, Margaret. Lonergan shot the film in 2005 with a top-shelf cast including Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, Allison Janney, Olivia Thirlby, plus You Can Count on Me stars Mark Ruffalo and Matthew Broderick. Fox Searchlight initially planned for a 2007 release, but Lonergan was unable to find the movie he wanted in the editing bay. Margaret has been tangled up in legal delays over the last couple years, but its day has come. September 30, 2011, specifically. Announcing the release date less than two months in advance usually isn’t followed by heavy promotion and Oscar buzz — I’m just excited that we will finally get to see this thing.
Hit the jump for details on the release dates of The Big Wedding, Turbo, Leafmen, and Walking with Dinosaurs.
