While Universal Pictures skipped CinemaCon/ShoWest the past couple of years, they more than made up for it with the best presentation of 2012. While all the studios have great-looking movies arriving in 2012 and 2013, I wanted to see every single movie Universal talked about at CinemaCon In addition, not only did they bring in the movie stars and directors, they world premiered footage from nine movies including Les Miserables, Ted, Savages, This is 40, R.I.P.D., Oblivion, The Bourne Legacy, Snow White and the Huntsman, and 47 Ronin. In addition, they made sure to remind attendees that while filming hasn’t started on Fast and Furious 6 (the working title), it’s arriving next May, and Despicable Me 2 opens in July. For what I thought about all the movies plus a complete video blog recap, hit the jump.

A Japanese trailer for The Bourne Legacy has gone online. It’s not incredibly different from the US trailer we saw previously, but there are a couple bits of new footage and some more looks at Edward Norton that make it worth a gander. Writer/director Tony Gilroy recently talked about how the film sets itself apart from the previous three films while maintaining a strong throughline, adding that “what happens in Ultimatum is really the spark that’s blowing open the door to this movie because the Jason Bourne story is exploding out into the public.” I’m excited to see how Gilroy executes this “separate but connected” film and how Jeremy Renner’s character differs from Jason Bourne. I really liked the US trailer and I think the cast is swell, so hopefully Legacy delivers.

The summer movie season is getting ready to kick off with The Avengers early next month, but a new image from one of the hotly anticipated films that will close the summer movie season has now gone online. This new image from The Bourne Legacy gives us our first look at Edward Norton in the villain role, and writer-director Tony Gilroy recently sat down to talk about how Legacy is connected to the other films in the series, and how he’s setting the movie up as a stand-alone entry in the franchise with a wholly different lead character.

The latest issue of Empire Magazine has been chock-full of images from this summer’s upcoming slate of blockbuster films. We’ve already taken a look at new stuff from The Avengers and Men in Black 3, and now we’ve got Jeremy Renner caught between a hard place and another hard place in an image from The Bourne Legacy. Why is he sliding down or falling between two walls? Because that’s what kick-ass spies do. Everyone knows that.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I can’t help but think that Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum’s The Vow is Hollywood’s way of saying, “We know you suck at planning romantic Valentine’s dates, so why not pay us to take care of that for you?”. And you know what? They’re right. I’ve already reserved a couple of tix for the pic and, just like that, I’m basically a romance deity (Note: “Romance deity” may be a slight exaggeration”).
All romantic escapades aside, this week’s “Top 5″ brings you all of our John Carter set visit coverage, a plethora of Star Wars items, a new trailer for director Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, the first trailer and poster from Jeremy Renner‘s The Bourne Legacy, and all of Super Bowl XLVI’s movie ads in one place. You can find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

The first trailer and poster for The Bourne Legacy have gone online. The central message of the trailer is this: Jeremy Renner can kick the shit out of people just as well as Matt Damon. It’s clearly the same Bourne flavor, and audiences will be happy to get another great actor beating up bad guys. The editing moves so fast that it’s tough to tell how much writer-director Tony Gilroy‘s style will differ from Paul Greengrass‘ (who directed Supremacy and Ultimatum), but I’m eager to see what Gilroy has in store.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The film also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, and Scott Glenn. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd.

A teaser poster for The Bourne Legacy has gone online and it’s a strong contender for Dumbest Tagline of 2012. The tagline: “Prepare for the Unexpected”. Really, Poster? “Prepare for the Unexpected.” How do you propose I go about doing that? Plastic tarps and duct tape? Buy up bottled water? What do you want from me, teaser poster. Also, this poster looks so bland that it might be a promo poster rather than something Universal’s actually going to put up in theaters.
Hit the jump to prepare for an expected poster. The film stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and Edward Norton. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd. In a related story, we’ve update the first image from the movie with a hi-res version. Click here to check it out the image. [Update: Universal has informed us that this is not the official one-sheet for the film and has asked us to take the poster down. We'll of course bring you the actual poster for the film once it's released.]

The fantastic Bourne series is set to continue later this year without star Matt Damon (and without the character of Jason Bourne) in The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy Renner takes the lead role this time around, and the first image of him in character as “Aaron Cross” has hit the web. The franchise entry isn’t so much a reboot, but a separate story that takes place in the same Bourne universe. Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three Bourne flicks, is in the director’s chair and Renner is surrounded by an impressive ensemble that includes Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and Edward Norton as the villain. While this first image isn’t exactly the most riveting of stills, it gives us a look at a pretty intense Renner death stare. The pic is one of my most anticipated of the year, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Renner picks up where Damon left off.

As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to look forward to the movies set to open in 2012. While many are busy compiling their Top 10 lists from 2011, we thought it’d be a good time to run down the list of our 15 most anticipated blockbusters of the coming year. Will The Avengers deliver as the culmination of four years worth of Marvel movies? Just how much of a prequel to Alien is Prometheus? Will The Dark Knight Rises be the greatest movie ever made in the history of movies and awesomeness? There are a lot of unknowns, and we’ve learned that sometimes the best behind-the-scenes talent can still make a stinker (Cowboys & Aliens), but we’re hoping for more than a few pleasant surprises (a la X-Men: First Class) to appease us in 2012. Hit the jump to check out our list.

In Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, actor Jeremy Renner plays Agent William Brandt, an analyst who is more desk jockey than field agent. When Impossible Missions Force (IMF) operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, he is disavowed, along with the rest of the agency, when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol.” Left with only a team of fellow IMF fugitives – including Brandt, Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) – whose personal motives are unclear, Hunt must find a way to clear the agency’s name and prevent another attack.
At the film’s press day, Jeremy Renner talked about playing a character whose motives may be questionable, how great it is to be a part of such a successful franchise, getting in shape for the physical demands of the role, and how Tom Cruise has helped him prepare for any future action work he’ll have to do. He also talked about currently filming The Bourne Legacy, his work in The Avengers, what attracted him to the James Gray film Low Life, and the process of developing a Steve McQueen biopic. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

While he was in L.A. to do press for the release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (in theaters December 16th in IMAX and December 21st on all other screens), Collider got the opportunity to participate in a roundtable with actor Jeremy Renner. Even though we’re holding that portion of the interview until the week of the film’s release, we did want to share what he had to say about his other upcoming franchise films, The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy, which he’s filming until the end of February 2012.
In talking about The Bourne Legacy, Renner said that he is not taking over for Matt Damon, who will always be Jason Bourne, but that the film is written by the same writer, who is also directing this installment of the franchise. When it comes to The Avengers, Renner said that it was such an amazing challenge, with all of the characters, and that he has no idea what the film will look like because there was so much going on. He’d also love to do a Hawkeye movie, if the opportunity were to arise, but that he has no idea what the future will hold. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Jeremy Renner has doubled-down on spy franchises. Next month he joins the IMF in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and next year he’ll be the new face of the Bourne franchise by starring in The Bourne Legacy. For those unfamiliar with the new Bourne, the role of Jason Bourne hasn’t been recast. Instead, Renner’s character will play another agent from the same Treadstone program. Renner tells Empire that his character is named “Aaron Cross, but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it’s a new program and new characters.”
Hit the jump for more on what Renner says we can expect from the new Bourne. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens in IMAX on December 16th and goes nationwide on December 21st. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3, 2012. Renner also stars in the two other 2012 tentpole movies: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (March 2nd) and The Avengers (May 4th).

The first set photos from Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of Lee Child’s One Shot and Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy have leaked online. Since these aren’t superhero movies and we’re not trying to glance fancy costumes, there’s not much you can glean from these set photos. Tom Cruise is playing ex-military investigator Jack Reacher in One Shot. The character will have short hair and drive a sweet ride. As for Weisz, we knew she would be playing “an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne (Jeremy Renner),” and apparently the character will be rocking a sweet, sweet lab coat.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos. One Shot is due out February 8, 2013 and co-stars Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3, 2012 and also stars Oscar Isaac, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, and Edward Norton.

Scott Glenn, last seen trying to get out of Sucker Punch with his dignity intact, has signed on for two more films. First up, he’ll be joining fellow Bourne alums Joan Allen and Albert Finney in Tony Gilroy’s re-launch of the series, The Bourne Legacy. The movie doesn’t actually feature Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) but has Jeremy Renner as another alumnus of the Treadstone program. Glenn will reprise his role as CIA director Ezra Kramer. The Bourne Legacy also stars Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Stacy Keach, with Edward Norton playing the villain. Universal plans to release the film on August 3, 2012.
Variety also reports that Glenn will play newspaper chief W.W. James in Lee Daniels’ adaptation of The Paperboy. The movie stars “Matthew McConaughey as a reporter who returns to his Florida hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate played by John Cusack.”

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Variety reports that Stacey Keach is the latest to join the cast of Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy Renner takes on the lead role as an operative trained in the same program that Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne was running from in the first three films. Keach joins previously announced Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen and Albert Finney. Edward Norton is also in talks to play the villain in the film. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd, 2012.
Additionally, Noah Huntley (Your Highness) is set to play King Magnus in one of eighteen Snow White projects in the works at the moment, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Producer Palek Patel broke the news on his Twitter (via Showblitz), revealing that Huntley will play White’s father. Rupert Sanders is directing, and the cast includes Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. We got our first look at the actors in their costumes a couple weeks ago, and I was onhand for the Comic-Con panel and was actually quite impressed. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st, 2012.
