One of my favorite films from last year’s Sundance was Sound of My Voice (which opens this weekend in limited release). Directed and co-written by Zal Batmanglij, the film follows a documentary filmmaking team made up of Christopher Denham and his girlfriend (Nicole Vicius) as they investigate a cult lead by a supposed time-traveler (Brit Marling who also co-wrote the film).  While they start the investigation intent on exposing her and freeing the followers, as they get further inside, they start to question their objectives.  For more on the film, you can watch the first twelve minutes here.

During the recent Los Angeles press day for the film, I sat down withBrit Marling for an extended interview.  We talked about what it’s been like waiting for the film to get released, her writing process, Sci-fi, favorite movies, and a lot more.   In addition, Marling talked about The East (which also stars Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page) and Robert Redford‘s The Company You Keep.  Hit the jump for what she had to say and make sure to check out Sound of My Voice this weekend!

Robert Redford is assembling quite the ensemble for his next directorial project The Company You Keep. Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Elliott and 11-year-old America’s Got Talent finalist Jackie Evancho have joined the cast of the drama. Based on the novel by Neal Gordon, the story centers on a former Weather Underground militant who goes on the run after an ambitious young journalist exposes his true identity. Redford will be pulling double duty, as he’ll also star as the Weather Underground militant in the film. Shia LaBeouf is onboard to take on the role of the journalist. Other cast members include Brit Marling, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Cooper.

Robert Redford has assembled quite the cast for his next directorial effort, and he’s just added two more terrific thesps to the roster: Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper. The Company You Keep. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Neal Gordon, and centers on a former Weather Underground militant who goes on the run after an ambitious young journalist exposes his true identity. Redford will play the militant, while Shia LaBeouf is set as the young reporter.

Screen Daily (via The Playlist) reports that Tucci will play LaBeouf’s editor, while Cooper will take on the role of Redford’s brother who is forced to take his niece in when Redford’s character goes into hiding. In addition to Redford and LaBeouf, the cast now includes Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Brit Marling, Julie Christie and Richard Jenkins. Filming is set to begin soon in Vancouver. I imagine Stephen Root is a joy to work with, the kind of actor that motivates directors to search for a role for him in their next project.  Exhibit A: Root played a small part in The Conspirator, and director Robert Redford promptly signed the actor for his follow-up The Company You Keep.  Redford also stars as “a former militant wanted by the FBI who goes on the run when his identity is exposed by an ambitious young reporter (Shia LaBeouf).”  Brit Marling, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Richard Jenkins, and Julie Christie also star.  According to Variety, Root will play Billy Cusimano, one of Redford’s legal clients before his former identity is revealed.  I fall for most stories set in the 1960s, but the talented cast goes a long way to validate my hopes in this case.

Lem Dobbs (The Score) adapted The Company You Keep from the novel of the same name by Neil Gordon.  Read the synopsis after the jump.

Robert Redford continues to fill out the cast for his next directorial project, as Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie and Richard Jenkins are the latest to join The Company You Keep. Redford will direct and star in the film that also features Shia LaBeouf, and recent additions Nick Nolte and Brit Marling. Based on the novel of the same name by Neal Gordon, the story centers on a wanted former Weather Underground militant (Redford) who goes on the run after an ambitious young reporter (LaBeouf) exposes his true identity.

Deadline reports that Sarandon and Christie play ex-Weather Underground members, while Jenkins will play a college professor who is a link to other members in hiding. While the cast is pretty great, I’m hoping Redford tries a decidedly less heavy-handed approach than his last directorial projects. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

We have a couple quick casting stories to report this morning.  First up, rising star Brit Marling (Another Earth) has chosen between Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep and the Tom Cruise action flick One Shot and cast her lot with the former.  Variety reports that Marling will co-star with Redford and Shia LaBeouf in the flick which centers on a former Weather Underground militant (Redford) who goes on the run when his identity is revealed by an ambitious reporter (LaBeouf).  Nick Nolte will also star in the flick but there’s no word on what role he or Marling will play.  Marling is also committed to reunite with her Sound of My Voice director Zal Batmanglij for the thriller The East.

In other casting news, Matt Dillon will join Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening in Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s Imogene.  Wiig plays a playwright who fakes suicide in order to win back her ex but ends up in the custody of her Jersey Shore-esque mother (Bening).  Deadline reports that Dillon will play Bening’s love interest and “he claims to be in the CIA, but his behavior suggests he just might be crazy.”

Brit Marling Circling Robert Redford’s THE COMPANY YOU KEEP and Christopher McQuarrie’s ONE SHOT Starring Tom Cruise

Brit Marling is having a very good year.  She starred in and co-wrote the critically acclaimed Another Earth and the upcoming Sound of My Voice and now the offers are pouring in.  Vulture reports that she’s being courted for Robert Redford’s political drama The Company You Keep and the action-thriller One Shot starring Tom Cruise.  Marling has already passed on Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, which has Channing Tatum playing Channing Tatum about Channing Tatum’s early years as male stripper (I can’t think of a movie I want to see less even if it did co-star Marling).  Instead, Marling chose to reteam with her Sound of My Voice director Zal Batmanglij for The East, a thriller she co-wrote with him about an FBI agent who infiltrates an ecoterrorist group.  Fox Searchlight intends to start filming on The East this October provided they can find a huge star to anchor it.

Shia LaBeouf Joins Robert Redford’s THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

Shia LaBeouf will star opposite Robert Redford in the political drama The Company You Keep.  Redford will direct from a script by Lem Dobbs (The Limey) based on the novel by Neil Gordon.  Per Variety, “Redford will play a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years who must go on the run when a young, ambitious reporter exposes his true identity. LaBeouf will play the budding journalist who’s determined to make a name for himself.”  Since the film revolves around an obvious political subtext, I expect Redford will be as clumsily condescending and pedantic as he was with Lions for Lambs and The Conspirator.

Earlier this year, LaBeouf was filming on John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era drama The Wettest County in the World.  He’s also been linked to the Vietnam War drama Pinkville, the historical comedy/drama  College Republicans, and adaptations of Joe Hill’s Horns and John Grisham’s The Associate.
