THE CRAZIES Blu-ray Review

Every once in a while, you’ll hear a disturbing news account of some mild mannered office employee who suddenly opened fire on his coworkers, a quiet student who abruptly turned his classmates into target practice or a nice father who shockingly hacked his family to pieces. The Crazies preys on our fears of these random, unexpected acts of violence, most effectively in its opening sequence, in which a small town father shows up at a local baseball game presumably loaded and carrying a loaded weapon.  More after the jump:

Weekend Box Office – Scorsese Takes a Second Week On Top with SHUTTER ISLAND

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: February 28th, 2010 at 10:18 am

slice_shutter_island_01.jpg

For the second weekend in a row, Shutter Island is the number one film in the country – a victory tempered only by the soft overall attendance on this last week of February, by the continuing bad weather on the East Coast and by the lack of any strong competition offered by Kevin Smith’s new release Cop Out. But hey, a win is still a win, right?

Title Weekend Total
1 Shutter Island $22,200,000 $75
2 Cop Out $18,565,000 $18.5
3 The Crazies $16,521,000 $16.5
4 Avatar $14,000,000 $706.9
5 Percy Jackson $9,800,000 $71.2
6 Valentine’s Day $9,505,000 $100.3
7 Dear John $5,000,000 $72.6
8 The Wolfman $4,123,000 $57.2
9 Tooth Fairy $3,450,000 $53.8
10 Crazy heart $2,540,000 $25

Friday Box Office – Shut Out. With $6.7 Million SHUTTER ISLAND Leads COP OUT and THE CRAZIES.

Despite a seemingly unending string of promotional appearances by stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan over the past week, the $5.9 million collected by Warner Brothers’ Cop Out fell short of securing the number one spot on Friday’s box office estimates. That honor went to Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island instead, with an estimated $6.7 million earned on its second Friday in release. Things may have gone down differently if Kevin Smith had been able to leave the word “Dicks” in his film’s title, but I guess now we’ll never know. Though playing on 600 fewer screens than Cop Out, the horror remake of The Crazies also debuted with an estimated $5.9 million, which means that this could be the first weekend since last August to see three R-rated films leading the top ten. And yes, that’s about as exciting as we can expect on the last weekend of February. Full weekend box office results when you check back tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Shutter Island $6,700,000 $52.5
2 Cop Out $5,900,000 $5.9
3 The Crazies $5,900,000 $5.9
4 Avatar $3,100,000 $696
5 Valentine’s Day $2,970,000 $93.8

THE CRAZIES Review

Breck Eisner’s The Crazies might make you believe something this hellacious isn’t just a work of far-flung fiction, but a possible reality. For a Hollywood horror film, that is quite a feat when the weird seems to gush from the wounds of multi-million dollar projects that often strive for shock over true substance or coherency. Eisner, working off of George A. Romero’s 1973 original The Crazies, uses a believable story with the required scares and thrills without succumbing to sheer absurdity or grotesque violence. By using focused and tight camerawork, a narrative that is easy to follow, and quality acting, Eisner delivers a worthy entry in the horror genre that is a pleasure from start to finish, even for non-genre fans.

Sizzle Reel for THE CRAZIES Starring Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker

A sizzle reel for Breck Eisner’s upcoming horror film The Crazies has just gone up online and it’s pretty damn cool.  For those who don’t know, a sizzle reel is a combination of a featurette with a trailer. You don’t see any behind-the-scenes stuff, but you have the actors talking about the film, while some really intense action is happening on screen.  I’m hearing good things about the movie, which is terrific since 90% of mainstream horror movies seem to phone in it these days.

Hit the jump to check out the sizzle reel along with the official synopsis.  Also, you can click here to read an interview with Danielle Panabaker, click here to read an interview with Breck Eisner, and click here to read my set report from last year.

The Crazies hits theaters tomorrow.  Look for Bill Graham’s review later tonight.

Most recently, I talked with one of the film’s stars, Danielle Panabaker. Hit the jump for her thoughts on The Crazies and what we can expect to see from her in the future.

MACHINIST Screenwriter Scott Kosar to Work on Script for VLAD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 15th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Summit doesn’t fear a Son of Anarchy as they’ve brought in screenwriter Scott Kosar to work on Charlie Hunnam’s script for Vlad, an action-thriller based on the life of Vlad the Impaler as a young prince; before he became known as Dracula.  Kosar’s previous films include the 2004 Christian Bale flick The Machinist as well as the remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, and The Crazies.  The film will be directed by music video director Anthony Mandler.

Another pre-Dracula tale trying to get off the ground is Alex Proyas’ Dracula: Year Zero, which also follows the historical tale of Vlad the Impaler, but then takes a supernatural route.  I’m not sure Vlad will do the same and it could (and may have to) distinguish itself by setting the myth of Dracula in a realistic setting so audiences can see not the Dracula we know today, but how a historical figure inspired Bram Stoker’s tale of the bloodsucker.  Year Zero is also looking to land a big name actor, such as Sam Worthington, in the lead role.  Vlad may intend to do the same but hasn’t reach that stage yet.  It could also just be a smaller production.  It will be interesting to see if either or both of these projects go into production, but these days it seems wise to bet on vampires even if they don’t sparkle in sunshine.

New Banners for THE CRAZIES Will Not Benefit Ogden Marsh’s Tourism Industry

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 12th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

slice_crazies_movie_banner_poster_01.jpg

Overture has provided us with three new banners for their upcoming horror flick The Crazies and I’m not sure if they’re the best way to promote Ogden Marsh, the setting of the film.  They say, “Welcome to Ogden Marsh, the friendliest place on Earth,” but that’s pretty difficult to believe.  For starters, have they compared Ogden Marsh to every other place on Earth?  And how do you measure “friendliest”?  This is a highly dubious promotion.  Oh, and the people they put on the posters appear to have a vascular problem and they’re wielding wrenches, pitchforks, and guns.  This may also be a bit of a turn-off to potential visitors.

Based off the 1973 George Romero film of the same name, The Crazies is directed by Breck Eisner, and stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker. Hit the jump to check out all three banners along with the official synopsis.  The Crazies hits theaters on February 26th.

Director Carl Rinsch to Swim with THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 15th, 2009 at 12:56 am

slice_creature_black_lagoon_movie_image_01.jpg

He may have lost his chance to direct the fifth Alien movie, but director Carl Rinsch is doing pretty well for himself. Last month, we told you that Rinsch would be behind the camera on 47 Ronin, the film adaptation of the Japanese Chūshingura legend. Now it looks like Rinsch has lined up an even higher profile film with Hero Complex reporting that Rinsch is in talks to direct the remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The 1954 original involved a scientific expedition encountering a dangerous amphibious humanoid who may or may not be from a darkly colored body of water.

Multiple directors over the past three decades have tried to revive Creature, from John Landis to Peter Jackson to the most recent director to depart, Brick Eisner. Eisner, who recently remade George Romero’s 1973 horror film The Crazies, has now moved on to remake David Cronenberg’s 1979 horror film, The Brood. As for Creature, Universal is going back to square one on the script after recent passes by Eisner and Gary Ross (Seabiscuit). Whether Rinsch will be the one to finally bring the remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon to the big screen remains to be seen, but I suppose he has some extra incentive since he’ll get to show off what he would’ve done in a movie about an otherworldly creature terrorizing humans.

New Trailer for THE CRAZIES Starring Timothy Olyphant

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 11th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

slice_crazies_2010_poster_01.jpg

Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new trailer for Breck Eisner’s remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror film, The Crazies.  The film stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Radha Mitchell (Surrogates), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the unfortunate residents of a town where residents are inexplicably turning, to quote Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac, “a tad bit fuckered in the head.”  I was lucky enough to get to go to the set this past March where I saw some cool stuff, especially in terms of the special effects make-up, which is important when you’re making a gruesome horror movie.  You can click here to read my full set report where I go in depth about the make-up and how time stops when in you’re in a high school classroom no matter how old you are.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer along with the official synopsis.  The Crazies hits theaters on February 26, 2010.

THE CRAZIES Trailer

by Jeffrey Van Camp    Posted: October 1st, 2009 at 5:15 pm

The Crazies movie poster slice.jpg

Zombies are back, though I’m not sure they ever left. On the eve of Zombieland hitting theaters, a trailer for “The Crazies” has finally gone live. As we reported on Wednesday, the film is a remake of a 1973 George Romero film of the same name. The remake stars Timothy Olyphant and takes place in a small Iowa town where a toxin contaminates the water supply, turning everyone completely crazy. The trailer and my thoughts on it after the jump.
