HUNG and VAMPIRE DIARIES Star Stephen Amell is The CW’s ARROW

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: January 31st, 2012 at 3:10 pm

After learning that The CW was replacing its superhero void left by the end of Smallville with Arrow, based on the DC Comics hero Green Arrow, we were left to wonder who would play the superhero. Well, wonder no more as THR has learned that Stephen Amell has been cast as the titular character. The series follows Amell as a playboy by day who becomes the Green Arrow at night who fights crime in the city with a special bow and arrow. Currently the series is ordered to pilot with Green Lantern duo Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim executive producing and writing the project, so hopefully it will actually make it to air. With Hung canceled, Amell’s schedule was left free and clear for what promises to be quite the opportunity, the same kind that turned Tom Welling into a star after playing Clark Kent on Smallville.

The CW and GREEN LANTERN Writers Bringing GREEN ARROW to Television

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: January 13th, 2012 at 9:27 am

The CW already delved into DC Comics universe with their recently concluded Superman series Smallville, and writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim brought Green Lantern to the big screen last summer. But now THR reports the network and writing duo are teaming up for Arrow, a small screen adaptation of Green Arrow which is currently in development. It’s not surprising considering the response to the hero’s appearance throughout a few seasons on Smallville was pretty strong, however, Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow in the series, is not attached to this new project. Berlanti and Guggenheim will executive produce the series which serves as the second superhero property in development for Berlanti Productions along with Booster Gold at SyFy. There’s a gaping hole for a fanboy presence on The CW now so we’ll have to wait and see if the Green Arrow can fill it.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Season Two Blu-ray Review

A show like The Vampire Diaries is easily dismissed; there seems to be no reason at all to tune in unless you’re a fifteen-year-old girl who really loves Edward Cullen, or a cable-less vampire lover. The latter might even be a bit of a stretch. What you’d be missing while under that assumption, however, is one of the most consistently good shows on network TV. Though the premise might be a little hard to swallow at first – especially if you’re not the target demographic of anything else the CW puts out – the show is worth the effort. Hidden behind a trite storyline is solid writing, intriguing storytelling, and one of the most frivolously addictive shows on air right now. Continuing to make themselves the dominant force in streaming etnertainment to users, Netflix, Warner Bros. Television Group and CBS Corporation have just signed a four-year deal that will bring all prior seasons of The CW’s current scripted series and future shows to Netflix. That means all previous programming, and anything between now and the 2014-2015 season will be made available to watch instantly by Netflix users. The deal includes all drama series on the network’s 2011 schedule like Ringer, Hart of Dixie, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatrual, Nikita and One Tree Hill.

All the previous season of The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and Nikita will be available on October 15th while episodes of Supernatural and 90210 won’t arrive until January 2012. As for all the episodes airing on The CW this season, they will be made available in the fall of 2012, before the next season starts. However, any new series that appear on The CW after this point, will be made available through a commensurate window during that current season. Good news for anyone who likes them some programming from The CW and those who are eager to see Netflix continue to dominate the online entertainment market. The CW Orders Full Seasons of RINGER, SECRET CIRCLE and HART OF DIXIE

It sounds like Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to the network that made her a star with Buffy the Vampire Slayer has paid off with The CW announcing that a full season for three of their new drama series including Ringer as well as Kevin Williamson’s Secret Circle and Josh Schwartz’s Hart of Dixie starring Rachel Bilson. Honestly, I’m surprised that The CW is ordering full seasons for all of these new shows, but apparently they’ve all sat well on the ratings and seem to be hitting all the right demographics to stay alive. Personally, none of the shows tickled my fancy to add to my line-up every week, but surely fans will be happy to hear about the networks faith in each of these new series. REAPER Creators Sell NORTORIOUS Police Procedural to CBS and Alien Bounty Hunter Project to The CW

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: September 30th, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Since most of the programming on The CW isn’t really my cup of tea, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying the hell out of Reaper a few years back. Unfortunately, the series was shortlived with only two seasons before cancellation, but the creators of that series, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters are back with two new series at two different networks. The first is Notorious, a character-based police procedural (because we don’t have enough of those) which follows an attention-loving LAPD detective who has become famous after solving a murder that made national headlines. Thriving in the spotlight and not bothered by the fact that his personal life is fodder for TMZ, he tries to solve the city’s most high-profile cases. Sounds like there’s a bit of comedy to be had in this series, but the TV duo has plenty of dramatic procedural experience since they both worked for five season on Law & Order: SVU and even became co-executive producers of that series.

Executive Producer/Writer Julie Plec Interview THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Season 3

In this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, entitled “The End of the Affair,” family ties will be revealed, relationships will be explained and familiar faces will return, and it’s only the third episode into Season 3. Collider was one of a handful of outlets invited over to The CW offices to view the episode and all of its edge-of-your-seat moments a day early, and see what hints we could get executive producer/writer Julie Plec to tease, in regard to the upcoming season.

While she didn’t give any specifics or major reveals, Julie Plec did talk about how this episode is just the beginning of what viewers will see of the Originals’ history and origin, what these revelations will do to the relationship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), that the chemistry between Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be illuminated more as a result, what the true agenda of the ghosts visiting Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is, when Bonnie (Katerina Graham) will return, how things will develop between Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino), and that viewers should always dread character deaths. Jaime King Talks HART OF DIXIE and Her Directing Debut LATCH KEY

From executive producer Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl, Chuck, The O.C.), the new CW drama series Hart of Dixie, premiering on September 26th, follows New York City doctor Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) as she inherits a small local medical practice in Bluebell, Alabama and must learn to adjust to life in a small Southern town. But, Southern hospitality isn’t always so hospitable, as evidenced by the reaction of Brick Breeland (guest star Tim Matheson), the other doctor in town, and his normally sweet southern belle daughter Lemon (Jaime King), whose disposition turns sour upon meeting Zoe.

During an interview about her role on the new show, actress Jaime King talked about what made her decide to try television, how she enjoys the complexity of her character, and how she feels the big city and small town aspects of this show will help it appeal to everyone. She also talked about how she recently directed her first feature, Latch Key (which she also wrote), in her hometown of Omaha Nebraska. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

The CW Orders More Episodes of GOSSIP GIRL, 90210, SUPERNATURAL, and NIKITA

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: August 3rd, 2011 at 3:17 pm

the-cw-logo-slice

The season hasn’t even started yet, but The CW has preemptively decided to order more episodes of four of their returning series in spite of the fact that each of them already had a full season order. TV Line reports the network has ordered two more episodes for Gossip Girl and 90210 giving each series a 24-episode season while Supernatural and Nikita each got one more episode ordered for a 23-episode season. Apparently, this is an effort to keep the amount of reruns that show up during the mid-season to a minimum. If Vampire Diaries fans are wondering why more episodes weren’t ordered for the series, the post-production process makes additional episode orders a little more difficult (not to mention expensive). Otherwise, if you’re loving The CW and their ongoing series’, this news should come as a treat.

Comic-Con 2011: RINGER Panel Recap; Plus Watch a New Trailer

by Tommy Cook    Posted: July 22nd, 2011 at 10:35 am

ringer-comic-con-slice

The strange duality of Ringer – reflective of the CW show’s content – that while at once being one of the most highly anticipated of the Fall 2011 TV season (The return of Buffy!), almost no one knows anything about it. So clouded under a veil of mystery and enticing riddles, the only known facts are these: Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as a “woman in trouble” who takes over the life of her recently deceased (or is she?) identical sister and then, well… I have no clue, but color me intrigued. Intrigued enough to attend the 2011 Comic Con panel (featuring the likes of Gellar, Ioan Gruffudd, Nestor Carbonell, Kristoffer Polaha and series creators Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder) in the pursuit of answers to just what the hell this show’s about. Choice highlights (and maybe answers) follow along with a new trailer after the jump.

CW Releases Extended Trailer for RINGER Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar

If you didn’t know by now, Sarah Michelle Gellar is making her return to TV on The CW’s new series Ringer. We reported the series pick-up last week along with some clips from the series itself, but now The CW has released an extended trailer that gives us a much better idea of what this show is all about. The series features Gellar as a woman, who after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister only to learn that her sister’s seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she’s trying to leave behind. I’m not entirely convinced this is a must-watch series yet, but plenty of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will surely want to see Gellar’s return to the network. As for me, The CW has never really delivered the kind of programming I’m usually fond of, but I might give this a try. You can decide for yourself after watching the trailer after the jump.

The CW Renews NIKITA and ONE TREE HILL; Cancels HELLCATS; Adds RINGER Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, THE SECRET CIRCLE, HART OF DIXIE, and H8R

With upfronts in full swing, The CW has announced several bits of information regarding its Fall 2011 slate. First up, the good news (for the series’ involved, at least): Nikita and One Tree Hill (which will most likely outlive all of us) have both been renewed for their second and ninth seasons respectively. On the other side of things, InsideTV is also reporting that cheerleading drama Hellcats will not return for its second season.

In addition to its renewals and cancellations, The CW has also announced a number of new shows set to premiere later this year. Most notably of these is the drama/thriller series Ringer which will mark Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to television. Ringer ends up at The CW after being passed on by its parent network CBS who claimed that the pilot didn’t align with its brand (which, for me at least, is an indication that the show may actually be worth checking out). In addition to Ringer, the network also added Vampire Diaries-companion The Secret Circle, medical drama Hart of Dixie, and the Mario Lopez-hosted reality series H8R (which may take my own personal award for “Worst Idea I’ve Ever Heard”). Hit the jump to check out official synopses for each of these new shows.
