Though director Christopher Nolan is more widely associated with the most recent feature film iteration of Batman given that he’s, well, the director, David S. Goyer was also intricately involved with bringing The Dark Knight Trilogy to the big screen as Nolan’s close collaborator. Goyer and Nolan came up with the initial story for all three films and the two co-wrote the script for Batman Begins. Nolan has put an end to his relationship with Batman with last year’s closing chapter The Dark Knight Rises, but Warner Bros. will obviously be bringing Batman back to the big screen sooner rather than later given that it’s a billion dollar franchise.
Steve recently sat down with Goyer in anticipation of the upcoming Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons, which Goyer created, wrote, and executive produced. During the course of their conversation, Steve asked the scribe if he would consider working on a future Batman film should Warner Bros. seek his involvement. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We previously brought you 45 images of the epic fight scene between Batman (Christian Bale) and Bane (Tom Hardy) in The Dark Knight Rises, but now you can see them in action in this new behind-the-scenes Blu-ray extra. Featuring commentary from director Christopher Nolan and editor Lee Smith as well as Bale and Hardy themselves, the clip shows just how much physicality went into making the fight look realistic and an explanation behind the decision not to use stunt doubles.
The Dark Knight Rises, also starring Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard, is available on DVD/Blu-ray and VOD starting December 4th. Hit the jump to watch the clip.

Though it was already pretty much expected, we now have confirmation from Warner Bros. that an extended edition of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on home video sometime during the fourth quarter of 2013. The idea of extended editions for Jackson’s The Hobbit films is somewhat intriguing, though, given that the adaptation was initially expected to be two films in length before Jackson was granted permission to extend it to a full trilogy.

If you don’t know what Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s full name is for his character in The Dark Knight Rises, don’t fret; I’ll save that tidbit until after the jump. But since director David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis) decided to chime with his opinion on Christopher Nolan and his Batman trilogy, we thought we’d let Gordon-Levitt have his say. In a recent appearnce on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Gordon-Levitt talked about the final scene from The Dark Knight Rises and whether or not that sets anything up for a future film. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Going into this weekend, there were some people who believed Sony’s remake of Total Recall would give The Dark Knight Rises a run for its money. Those people were wrong. With an estimate of $36.4 million, TDKR claimed its third straight weekend at number one while Total Recall barely topped the debut of the Arnold Schwarzenegger original… back in 1990.

Reports that audiences were afraid to see The Dark Knight Rises on the weekend after the Aurora tragedy turned out to be not so true. Yes, the film had a steeper than usual drop on Friday but then rebounded nicely; taking first place with an estimated $64 million. It must have been the week’s two new releases that people were ‘hesitant’ to see. Neither The Watch nor Step Up Revolution made it out of the low teens on their opening frame.

As you’re likely aware, the 2012 Summer Olympics kicked off in London yesterday. In other words, it’s time for me to care about competitive swimming and gymnastics for the first time since the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. To all of our readers, especially those internationally-based, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on the Summer Olympics. Is it an event that evokes your inner-patriotism and love of otherwise obscure athletic feats? Do you take great joy in defeating the ol’ U.S. of A. in something other than Math and Science scores? Sound off in the comments.
This Saturday brings us the Man of Steel teaser trailer set to John Williams‘ original Superman score, coverage from our visit to the set of Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis‘ The Campaign, an extended trailer and first official images from Cloud Atlas, interviews with the fellas of The Watch, and Brendan’s latest By the Numbers installment covering The Caped Crusader from Batman: The Movie to The Dark Knight Rises. Unless you’re a Top 5 noob (in which case, welcome aboard!), you know that a brief recap and link to each can be found after the jump.

No one was particularly interested in counting box office receipts last weekend. In fact, out of respect for the victims of the Aurora shooting, Warner Brothers and the other major studios decided not to release earnings for The Dark Knight Rises (or any other current release) until Monday. By now we know that The Dark Knight Rises made $75.7 million on its opening day (including $30.6 from midnight screenings) and $160.8 million through Sunday. One week later, the final installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy saw a steep decline – down 76% with Friday’s estimate of $18 million from 4,404 locations. By comparison, 2008’s The Dark Knight was off 65.5% on its own second Friday. Projections have TDKR earning about $58 million this weekend, a number that would bring the film’s worldwide total close to $450 million. Meanwhile, the weekend’s new releases struggled. Fox’s ensemble comedy The Watch took in an estimated $4.5 million from 3,168 locations and Summit’s 3D Step Up Revolution garnered $4.85 million – in 600 fewer runs. Check back tomorrow for more details.

Whether you’re a fan of his take on the character or not, director Christopher Nolan changed the face of superhero movies forever with his Dark Knight trilogy. It seems like nearly every other comic book property since the release of Batman Begins has taken a “gritty” approach to the story, with Begins acting as the benchmark for grounded superhero adaptations. Nolan’s story has now come to a close with the third and final chapter, The Dark Knight Rises, and he’s written a sort of “farewell letter” to the series and the character.
It’s a touching, revealing look at Nolan’s journey to Rises and how his ambitious Batman reboot spawned one of the best—and most successful—trilogies of all time. Whatever your thoughts on how the final film unfolded may be, Nolan’s mark on the genre is undeniable and he’s set a new standard for what the term “upping your game” means. Hit the jump to read what he had to say.

I can’t say who is the biggest superhero in comics, but when it comes to their big screen counterparts, the debate is short: It’s Batman. With the release of The Dark Knight Rises, the collection of nine Batman feature films over the last six decades is on its way to $3 billion in worldwide gross. To celebrate I present Batman by the Numbers, a feature that provides a numbers-based snapshot of each movie and its place in the filmography by looking at the box office, critical reception, and miscellaneous facts.
Hit the jump for a comprehensive review of Batman at the movies, featuring Batman: The Movie, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises.
