As expected, neither of this week’s new comedies came close to catching Transformers 3 on its second weekend.  While Horrible Bosses became the latest R-rated comedy to top expectations this summer, Zookeeper became the latest potential tentpole to fall flat.  Meanwhile, both films combined barely topped this weekend’s estimate for Dark of the Moon, which became the US’s highest-grossing release of 2011 as of Sunday.

Title Weekend Total
1 Transformers 3 $47,000,000 $261
2 Horrible Bosses $28,100,000 $28.1
3 Zookeeper $21,000,000 $21
4 Cars 2 $15,209,000 $148.8
5 Bad Teacher $9,000,000 $78.7
6 Larry Crowne $6,264,000 $26.5
7 Super 8 $4,825,000 $118
8 Monte Carlo $3,800,000 $16.1
9 Green lantern $3,125,000 $109.7
10 Mr. Popper’s Penguins $2,850,000 $57.7

THE DILEMMA Blu-ray Review

By now, I think we’ve all faced facts:  Vince Vaughn’s entered the “puffy” stage of his career.  Gone is the motor-mouthed, all-sharp-angles ladies’ man with the stunning amount of overconfidence who owned films like Made, Swingers, and Wedding Crashers.  In his place, we’ve been given the slightly-heavier, slightly-slower, seemingly-disinterested Vaughn that’s headlined films like Four Christmases and Fred Claus (just try reading that title without shuddering).  Ron Howard’s The Dilemma is certainly a part of this “puffy period”, but does it succeed despite Vaughn’s low-powered screen presence?  Is The Dilemma as “Hilarious!” as the film’s cover box claims it to be?  Read on and find out in our full review, after the jump.

Around Christmastime, we heard The Green Hornet was tracking surprisingly high for a January release.  Could the superhero film really do big business in a desolate box office winter?  The answer is… well, kind of.  The Green Hornet won’t break the record for opening weekend in January nor the Martin Luther King holiday record set by Cloverfield in 2008.  But the film sits comfortably atop the box office charts with a solid $11.1 million on Friday.  The Dilemma had a harder time finding an audience despite its marketable pedigree.  Vince Vaughn.  Kevin James.  Ron Howard directing.  How can you lose?  Still, The Dilemma scored just $6.1 million on Friday, which should make for a moderate opening weekend.  True Grit, The King’s Speech, and Black Swan round out the top five in demonstration of what January is truly good for: catching up on Oscar contenders.  Check back tomorrow for full details.

Title Friday Total
1 The Green Hornet $11,100,000 $11.1
2 The Dilemma $6,100,000 $6.1
3 True Grit $3,200,000 $118.4
4 The King’s Speech $2,500,000 $38.0
5 Black Swan $2,400,000 $67.3

5 Movie Clips from THE DILEMMA

Universal has released 5 movie clips from The Dilemma, a comedy from director Ron Howard which stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah.  Vaughn plays a man who is distraught when he catches the wife (Ryder) of his best friend (James) cheating.

I didn’t love the trailer, but the cast is undeniably impressive.  The bromance between Vaughn and James plays well in this footage, which bodes well for the film.  Watch the clips after the jump.

New Posters for THE RITE and THE DILEMMA

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 15th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Two new movie posters with extreme use of photoshop have been released.  The first one is the Anthony Hopkins supernatural thriller The Rite, and the other is the Vince Vaughn/Kevin James comedy The Dilemma.  As you’ll see after the jump, both have liberally used photoshop to age down their leads.  When you look at Vaughn, it’s like Universal took a photo from Swingers and used that as the starting point.  Saying that, I’m still a huge fan of Vaughn and would love for The Dilemma to be worth our time.  Hit the jump for the posters and the synopses.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the upcoming comedy The Dilemma and it looks exactly like the movie you’d expect.  Basically, if you like bland-looking situation comedy but always want to spend $10 and go to the theater to see it rather than stay home and watch Two and a Half Men, then The Dilemma looks like the movie for you.  And hey, it’s Vince Vaughn once again playing Savvy-but-Beleaguered-Guy!  Oh, SBBG.  Can’t you ever get a break?

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Dilemma also stars Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah.  It opens on January 14, 2011.

Today we have the first image (plus a few more details) from Ron Howard’s The Dilemma.  Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, and Winona Ryder star with a script from Allan Loeb (The Switch).  The film centers on a man (Vaughn) who learns that the wife of his best friend (James) might be cheating.  Howard remarked to USA Today, “There is so much about Vince and Kevin’s relationship that could all unravel — they have a business together, they share a four-way friendship with Kevin’s wife (Ryder) and Vince’s girlfriend (Connelly).”

Among other things, Vaughn promises that James does “some JumboTron dancing” at a Chicago Blackhawks game when The Dilemma opens on January 14, 2011.
