Fox Passes on David Cronenberg’s THE FLY Sequel; Viggo Mortensen Still Attached to EASTERN PROMISES 2

Last month, we received confirmation that David Cronenberg had written a sequel to his 1986 classic horror film, The Fly.  At the time, Cronenberg explained “The Fly is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”  According to The Playlist, Fox has made their decision and that decision is to pass on the movie.  This doesn’t mean Fox won’t remake The Fly at some point, but if they do, it probably won’t be with Cronenberg.  On the one hand, it frees him up to visit new territory, but it also opens the door that some hacky director could come in and deliver a pointless new version (e.g. The Thing).

However, Cronenberg isn’t moving on to completely new material.  Hit the jump for an update on Eastern Promises 2.

David Cronenberg Confirms He’s Written a Follow-Up to THE FLY

Way back in 2009, before anyone had ever heard of the iPhone 5 or planking, it was announced that director David Cronenberg was set to develop a reboot of his 1986 classic The Fly. Following the announcement, word on the project pretty much went silent. However, Cronenberg recently offered an update on the film confirming that he’s written a script, and it’s more of a sequel than a reboot.  Speaking with STYD, the director had this to say:

“The Fly is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”

So it sounds like the fate of the project is in the studio’s hands. Given that it’s been a while since Cronenberg first started work on the follow-up, it appears that the film isn’t much of a priority for Fox at the moment. Whether the film will see the light of day is up for debate. The director is currently busy touting his latest film, the period psychology/sex drama (you can pretty much add “sex” to the description of every Cronenberg film) A Dangerous Method. He’s also busy with post-production on the Robert Pattinson-starred drama Cosmopolis. If you’re kicking off the new year by throwing out old shirts and looking to buy some new ones, the fantastic t-shirt site Last Exit to Nowhere has your torso covered.  They just released new shirts based on Jaws and The Fly.  I think the Jaws shirt is going to go fast because it’s got a better design and once you see it you think, “Why yes.  I have always wanted to own this.”  But the shirt for The Fly would also be worth owning because it’s the more esoteric reference and when people ask about Bartok Industries, you can tell them they’re very close to perfecting teleportation technology aside from a few minor hiccups.

David Cronenberg Remaking His Classic 1986 Film THE FLY For 20th Century Fox

Every day I read the latest film news and every couple of days there is always that one story which confuses me and makes me say “what.” out loud.  I look forward to these news items just because I find them more fun than the average news item.  Having said all that, I never thought that I would come home one of these days to see news pop out saying that David Cronenberg would be remaking his 1986 version of “The Fly” starring Jeff Goldblum.  This all just confuses me so much because how could you make something that is already perfect better?  If you are just as confused/fascinated as I am about this one, just hit the jump for more details.
