Carl Erik Rinsch’s 47 RONIN Starring Keanu Reeves Gets a November 21, 2012 Release Date; LOGAN’S RUN Searching for a New Director

by Ben Garman    Posted: November 13th, 2010 at 5:57 am

Carl Rinsch’s first feature film, 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves, has been given the green light by Universal and a release date: November 21st, 2012.  THR reports due to the green light, Rinsch has stepped down from Logan’s Run, the sci-fi feature he was previously set to direct, leaving the spot ready for another to claim. It’s unfortunate as Warner Bros. has had scant success securing a director to remake the film, but Rinsch feels he needs to prioritise and redirect his time and focus to ensure that 47 Ronin is a success.

The legend of the 47 Ronin is based on the true story of a group of samurai who avenged the forced, ritual suicide of their master back in 1702.  The leaderless samurai, or Ronin, plotted revenge for nearly a year before murdering the court officials who brought shame on their master and were rewarded by a big helping of their own forced, ritual suicide.

If you haven’t seen director Carl Erik Rinsch’s short sci-fi film The Gift, you need to stop reading and click this link.  That’s because Rinsch’s 5 minute short that takes place in a futuristic Russia is an awesome little film that has already sparked a bidding war in Hollywood.

While everyone assumed the bidding war was over the rights to the short film and the world Rinsch created, Peter at Slashfilm found out Rinsch has already written and designed a feature called Small and The Gift is actually the prequel to that film!  But it gets better.  Peter landed some leaked concept art from Small and if you hit the jump you can check it out:

Carl Rinsch’s THE GIFT Ignites Bidding War for Feature Film Adaptation

Carl Rinsch’s The Gift, which we showed you earlier today, is attracting attention from multiple studios who want to adapt it into a feature film.  Heat Vision reports that Warner Bros. and Fox are in a bidding war to adapt the property.  HV gives Fox the slight edge because Rinsch directed the short as part of RSA, Ridley Scott’s commercial house, and Scott has a longtime association with Fox.  I wonder if Fox is having second thoughts about giving the Alien prequel to Scott instead of Rinsch when Scott has fifty other projects he could choose from.

For those that haven’t watched the short, I’ve once again included it after the jump.  The best way to describe the film is robot-Jason Bourne meets MacGuffin meets Half-Life 2 in Moscow.

THE GIFT: A Slick Short Film by Carl Erik Rinsch

Carl Erik Rinsch recently directed a cool short film recently for the electronics manufacturer Philips as part of Ridley Scott’s RSA team.  For those that need a brief refresher on Rinsch, he was the guy who almost directed the Alien prequel.  Instead, Rinsch is now attached to direct 47 Ronin and a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon for Universal.

The short film is part of the Parallel Lines project where five of RSA’s hottest up-and-coming directors each had to make a film and the only requirement was that they include the dialogue, “It’s a unicorn.”  This leads me to believe that Philips is building the world’s first unicorn.

Hit the jump to see Rinsch’s sci-fi short, “The Gift” which debuted on /Film.  After you see it, you’ll want to keep him on your radar.

Keanu Reeves Guilty of HENRY’S CRIME

Keanu Reeves is known for many things.  He’s so zen that many consider his brain is on stand-by.  He will always be known for fantastic action movies like “Point Blank”, “Speed”, and “The Matrix”.  I also know him because I come to his defense every time someone says he can’t act and then I have to tell them to watch “The Gift” even though I don’t think it’s a very good film but I think Reeves is one of the few positive contributions.

But I wouldn’t say Keanu is known for comedy.  Oh, he’s had some hilarious films but I’m pretty sure movies like “Johnny Mnemonic”, “The Watcher”, and “Chain Reaction”, weren’t intentionally comedic.  Now it looks like Keanu is going to try and make us laugh with “Henry’s Crime”.  Find out if you can enjoy Keanu without irony after the jump.
