Whereas NBC is desperately scrambling for viewers (after falling behind Univision in some recent rankings), CBS, the most dominant of the Big Four networks continues to show its programming stability by renewing almost all of its series, including:
- Freshman Sherlock procedural drama Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu
- The excellent series The Good Wife, which has been on the bubble for years (however, with a new syndication deal CBS surely sees more dollar signs and viewers by keeping it on the air)
- Comedies Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls
- The many procedurals: NCIS: LA, Person of Interest, The Mentalist, Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods.
Two series that haven’t made the cut yet though are Criminal Minds (because of cast negotiations) and the Dennis Quaid vehicle Vegas, which hasn’t ever seemed to find its audience. For more on these shows (and the ones these nine series join in the ranks of already renewed), hit the jump.

It’s easy to forget, with the bevy of fantastic series that have become critical, popular, zeitgeist-inducing hits in the last few years on cable, that network TV still has plenty to offer in the way of decent programming. Some of the risks may not be as big, some of the scheduling may be a permanent frustration (see: The Good Wife), and some of the best series may get canceled too quickly while some pretty awful trash sticks around (is that our own faults? A discussion for another day) — but in the end, there’s quality. Hit the jump for a list of new series and a few overlooked returning shows worth highlighting among the recently-released network schedules.

Despite 30 Rock often cracking wise about how NBC is barely a network anymore, the broadcaster lead the Critics’ Choice Awards nominations with 14 recognitions (although 30 Rock, unfortunately, received none). NBC’s low-rated but much beloved jewel Community picked up six nominations on its own, including five for acting (Joel McHale, Jim Rash, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Danny Pudi), solidifying its place in the canon of widely under-appreciated series with deeply rooted critical and cult followings.
