A new image from director Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has landed online.  We got our first look at the film by way of a trailer earlier this week, and for better or worse it’s undeniably Luhrmann.  Many were put off by the use of popular music in the trailer, and to that lot I’d like to ask you to re-watch Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet and tell me what you were expecting from Luhrmann’s spin on Gatsby.  The cast is encouraging and the photography looks absolutely phenomenal (I’m actually eager to see the film in 3D).  If nothing else, Luhrmann’s Gatsby promises to be completely unlike any other iteration of the material we’ve seen before or are likely to see in the future.  This new image is a snapshot of a scene between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Gatsby and Carey Mulligan’s Daisy under the conveniently gorgeous moonlight.

The first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has gone online.  While I’m not the biggest fan of the source material, I do happen to be a fan of Luhrmann’s.  Having this phenomenal cast lined up for the production doesn’t hurt either and this new trailer gives us a glimpse at each of them in turn.  There are no 3D effects on display as of yet, but the first trailer highlights all of the bravura, hyperbole and flair we’ve come to expect from the Moulin Rouge! director.  While I was a little put off by the choice of music for the trailer, I’ve got faith that the soundtrack will be exemplary as always.

A new image from Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has gone online.  The image shows “flamboyant and suave Jewish money lender” Meyer Wolfsheim (Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan) sitting next to Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).  However, don’t expect to see much of Wolfsheim in the picture.  “I play Meyer Wolfsheim for about a few seconds…,” Bachchan tells THR, “by the time you look down on your popcorn to pick another morsel, I’d be gone from the film…he, he…kinda short service… But with giants of Hollywood – Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire.”  Still, it’s not bad gig for someone who hosts the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? I never saw Regis Philbin in a potential awards-contender.

When Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov took the stage at CinemaCon today, the big debate was over what footage he would showcase.  While rumors were flying that he’d show ten minutes of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit in 48fps, and that Christopher Nolan would show something from The Dark Knight Rises, no one was sure of anything.  But when he stepped off the stage after the presentation had ended, he had shown clips from some of the biggest films of 2012 and he also made history by world premiering the rumored Hobbit footage.

During the presentation we saw footage from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, Jay Roach’s The Campaign, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby in 3D, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages, and it ended with 10 minutes of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit in 48fps.  Hit the jump for more:

Kieran Darcy-Smith’s debut feature, Wish You Were Here, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  Starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price and Antony Starr, the film is about four friends (two couples) who embark on a carefree holiday in Cambodia, but only three of them return home.  As the film unfolds, we start to learn more about what happened on the trip and how one of them might know more than they’re letting on.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Edgerton for an exclusive interview.  During our extended conversation we talked about what it means to premiere at Sundance, how the project came together, what the film is about and who he plays, and how the project changed during the writing process.  In addition, Edgerton talked about two upcoming projects he’s involved with: Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby and Kathryn Bigelow‘s Osama Bin Laden movie.  Hit the jump to watch.

Production on Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby is currently underway in Australia, and today we’ve got our first look at official images from the film. We’ve seen a number of set photos featuring the cast all done up in their dapper Gatsby costumes, but these images give us our first official glimpse at stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton. Everything we’ve seen from this adaptation so far has been pretty fantastic, and these images are no exception (everyone’s just so damn attractive). Hopefully we’ll get to see a trailer sometime soon to get a better idea of what Luhrmann has in store.

Hit the jump to check out the images. DiCaprio plays Gatsby, Mulligan plays Dasiy, Maguire is our narrator Nick Carraway, and Edgerton takes on mega-douche Tom Buchanan. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th, 2012.

Callan McAuliffe Talks THE GREAT GATSBY and PARADISE LOST

Callan McAuliffe slice

Emerging as one of Hollywood most sought-after young actors, 16-year-old Aussie Callan McAuliffe is currently preparing to start his work as Young Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann’s 3D telling of the classic American story The Great Gatsby, due out in theaters on Christmas Day 2012, amidst sword fighting training, martial arts and ballet work for his role as archangel Uriel in Paradise Lost, adapted from the epic Biblical poem and shooting in January 2012 for a scheduled 2013 release.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, from Australia where he is going to shoot both films, Callan McAuliffe talked about what appealed to him about both projects, some changes in The Great Gatsby that could surprise audiences but that he thinks they will appreciate, that even though he’s playing a younger version of Leonardo DiCaprio he doesn’t think he looks like him at all, and what he thinks the 3D will add to the experience for audiences. He also talked about how he’s relying on director Alex Proyas’ vision for Paradise Lost when it comes to playing an archangel, that he’s looking forward to his scenes with Djimon Hounsou, and how he’d like to model his character after Johnny Depp, playing more alternative types of characters. Some new set photos from The Great Gatsby have surfaced, giving us a great look at the three leads in costume. Leonardo DiCaprio looks positively dapper as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan is lovely as Daisy, and Tobey Maguire looks like….well, Tobey Maguire. The images are pretty fantastic, and if you weren’t won over by the casting decisions alone, these costume pics should entice you. We got glances of Maguire before (as well as Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher), but this is our first look at DiCaprio and Mulligan. I’m anxiously looking forward to the adaptation not only because it’s The Great Gatsby, but also because I’m highly intrigued as to what director Baz Luhrmann has in store for his 3D iteration.

Carey Mulligan Talks SHAME, THE GREAT GATSBY, and the Coen Bros.’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

by Christina Radish    Posted: November 18th, 2011 at 9:04 am

The NC-17 rated drama Shame follows Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a New Yorker who refuses intimacy with women while feeding his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his younger sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), unexpectedly moves into his apartment, she stirs up memories of their shared painful past, and Brandon’s life begins to spiral further out of control.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, actress Carey Mulligan talked about how devastated she would have been if she hadn’t gotten to play Sissy, that she never knew what co-star Michael Fassbender was going to do during their scenes, how unflinching and uncompromising director Steve McQueen is, and how sex addiction is a subject that should be discussed, but that this film is definitely not for children. She also talked about how extraordinary it is to be in The Great Gatsby and work with Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann, how the Coen brothers are her favorite filmmakers and that she can’t believe she gets to be one of their characters (in Inside Llewyn Davis), and that she couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Spike Jonze. Carey Mulligan Talks THE GREAT GATSBY; Geeks Out Over Working with Coen Brothers, Spike Jonze, and Charlie Kaufman

British actress Carey Mulligan is certainly on an enviable role. Fresh off of critical acclaim for Drive, she has the haunting NC-17 drama Shame out in December, and she’s currently filming Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby in Australia. Once done there, she’s not slowing down any, as she will start shooting Inside Llewyn Davis (a musician trying to make it in the 1960′s New York folk scene) for the Coen brothers, and then do the new untitled Spike Jonze project from a Charlie Kaufman screenplay that reportedly centers on world leaders who unite to discuss cataclysmic events such as oil prices and wars.

While she was in L.A. recently, Collider got the opportunity to speak with Mulligan about her current and upcoming projects, how outrageously lucky she feels about working with such incredible talent, in front of and behind the camera, how extraordinary it is to be in a Baz Luhrmann film, her audition with Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio, how the Coen brothers are her favorite filmmakers and that she can’t believe she gets to be one of their characters, and that she couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Spike Jonze. New Set Photos of Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, and Isla Fischer in THE GREAT GATSBY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 26th, 2011 at 12:32 pm

New set photos from Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby have leaked online.  Most of the photos show a fight between Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).  I forget what brings Nick and Tom to fisticuffs, especially since Nick is the observer of Jay Gatsby’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) story rather than an active participant.  There’s also a first look at Isla Fischer as Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson.  There’s not much to say about these photos other than I dig the costumes and the fact that Edgerton is trying to pull off a Hitler moustache.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos and click here to see the set photos we posted yesterday..  The film also stars Carey Mulligan and Jason Clarke.   The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25, 2012.

Production is currently underway in Syndey on Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and some set photos have surfaced giving us our first look at Tobey Maguire in costume. Maguire plays Nick Carraway in the $150 million pic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan. Maguire looks pretty dapper in his bowtie and suit, and I’m extremely curious to see how Luhrmann’s big-budget adaptation turns out. The images also give us a look at the Long Island set.

Warner Bros. Sets THE GREAT GATSBY for December 25, 2012

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 14th, 2011 at 5:01 pm

If all you want for Christmas is Leonardo DiCaprio, 2012 will make you extremely happy. Warner Bros. has dated Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, starring DiCaprio, for a December 25th, 2012 release (per Deadline). Christmas Day 2012 also happens to be the release date of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, also starring DiCaprio. This isn’t the first time there’s been a DiCaprio vs. DiCaprio showdown for the holidays. Back in 2002, the DiCaprio-led Gangs of New York opened on December 20th, with Catch Me if You Can opening five days later on December 25th. All this to say, there’s no such thing as too much Leo.

Currently Gatsby and Django are the only two films slated for the Christmas Day release. Opening the previous Friday (December 21st) is the Untitled Judd Apatow Comedy (aka Knocked Up Spin-Off), the Brad Pitt-starred zombie pic World War Z, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, and Antoine Fuqua’s submarine thriller Hunter Killer. Peter Jackson’s first half of The Hobbit also opens on December 14th. The double dose of Leo should help to make the whole end of the world thing a little less insufferable.

Exclusive: Joel Edgerton Talks THE THING, THE GREAT GATSBY, and Kathryn Bigelow’s Osama Bin Laden Project

by Christina Radish    Posted: September 25th, 2011 at 9:00 pm

The upcoming thriller The Thing, opening in theaters on October 14th, is a prelude to the 1982 John Carpenter classic of the same name. Following a team at an isolated outpost in Antarctica, the discovery of an alien creature that is unearthed by a crew of international scientists causes paranoia to spread, as they begin to question which of them have been infected with something inhuman that has the ability to turn itself into an exact replica of any living being. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), helicopter pilot Carter (Joel Edgerton) and the Norwegian scientific team find themselves fighting this terrifying parasite to keep it from killing them off one at a time.  Here’s the trailer.

Fresh off the acclaim for his performance in Warrior, actor Joel Edgerton spoke to Collider in this exclusive phone interview about this very different role for him, what a fan he is of the Carpenter film, how nice it was to have a combination of practical and CG effects, how cool it was to get to use a flamethrower, and why being a massive fan of the original made  Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. the perfect guy for the job of director. He also talked about taking on the role of Tom Buchanan, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, for Baz Luhrmann’s vision of The Great Gatsby, and what attracted him to the Osama Bin Laden project that director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal are currently working on. Check out what he had to say after the jump.
