In the upcoming Andrew Niccol film The Host, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) plays an alien named Seeker who becomes obsessed with tracking down a band of rebellious humans who continue to mount a resistance against the invasion of Earth. At the heart of Seeker’s hunt is Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), a human who continues to rebel against the Soul implanted in her body and who may inadvertantly lead the Seeker to eradicating the humans once and for all.
During a recent press event, we were able to interview Kruger about The Host, her playing a somewhat antagonistic character for the first time, the film’s aesthetics and Niccol’s vision, as well as Meyer’s input on Kruger’s character. She also updated us on the progress of National Treasure 3, as well as her upcoming arthouse film The Green Blade Rises and the status of her new FX drama, The Bridge. Though Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated look into the life of President Abraham Lincoln hits theaters later this year, another Lincoln-centric film is already in the works. Elusive filmmaker Terrence Malick agreed to produce the directorial debut of AJ Edwards, The Green Blade Rises, and now Brit Marling and Wes Bentley have joined the cast in two crucial roles. Bentley will play the President’s first teacher, while Marling will play Lincoln’s biological mother Nancy, who withstood the challenges of pioneer life.
Diane Kruger and Jason Clarke are already onboard as Lincoln’s step-mother and father, but the role of Lincoln has still yet to be cast. Edwards worked with Malick as an editor on The New World, The Tree of Life, and To the Wonder, so it’ll be interesting to see how he applies what he learned from Malick on The Green Blade Rises. With regards to Knight of Cups, the movie, which stars Christian Bale, recently wrapped production and is about the Los Angeles movie business. The subject matter explains why every week there seems to be a new name attached to the project; they’re probably just small roles or cameos.
