With director Todd Phillips’ comedy sequel The Hangover Part III opening this week, I recently sat down with him for an extended interview.  In the final installment to the popular franchise, we find Stu (Helms), Phil (Cooper), and Doug (Justin Bartha) en route to taking Alan (Galifianakis) to a psychiatric hospital when the gang is side-trekked by a mysterious man (John Goodman) who kidnaps Doug and forces the wolf pack to track down Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), who stole $21 million from Goodman’s character.  As you might expect, chaos ensues.  For more on the film, watch the red band trailer or check out over forty images.

During the interview, Phillips and screenwriter Craig Mazin talked about his first cut versus the theatrical release, deleted scenes, what can fans expect on the Blu-ray, what it’s like working for Warner Bros. and the creative freedom he’s allowed, the writing process, how the story changed, film versus digital, thoughts on doing a 3D comedy, and more.  In addition, Phillips reveals they’re talking about doing the ultimate Hangover box set which would include new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.  Hit the jump for what they had to say.

During the interview, Jeong talked about Chow’s emotional journey, how the films have been getting darker, doing nude scenes, Chow’s accent, what fans always want to quote back to him, filming in Las Vegas, preparing for his big stunt in Part 3, and a lot more.  In addition, he talked about Community‘s renewal, whether Dan Harmon might return, and how he’d prepared a few tweets in case the show had been cancelled.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

The Wolfpack is headed back to Vegas in Todd Phillips’ conclusion of The Hangover trilogy, The Hangover Part III.  This new TV spot hints at just some of the trouble the guys get up to in Sin City while featuring looks at returning co-star Heather Graham and the new  big baddy played by John Goodman.  There’s also a new poster which features one of Alan’s animal sidekicks.

Just before Thanksgiving of last year, I took a little trip to Tijuana. Then things got a little fuzzy. I came to in a flophouse in the middle of nowhere and found myself with a front row seat to an out-of-control cock fight.  Blanket-draped chicken crates were stacked all around the seedy hotel room, which was quiet until Alan crashed into them … then all Hell broke loose.  Roosters took flight in the confined space and attacked anything they could get their talons on.  Unfortunately, that happened to be Phil and Stu’s faces.  Then, to make matters worse, Mr. Chow busted in and started firing a gun at the flying menaces, narrowly missing his friends.  After his clip ran out, director Todd Phillips yelled, “Cut! Reset!” and the cast and crew broke into laughter.

Rather than take to the dangerous streets of Tijuana itself (where someone might kidnap poor Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper), this particular scene of The Hangover Part III was staged on a Warner Bros. studio set.  The safety of the location certainly didn’t negatively impact the crazy performances of Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Ken Jeong at all.  Roosters and bullets were definitely flying, though not all of them were real.  The excitement on set from everyone involved in the trilogy’s concluding chapter was, however, quite genuine.  The Hangover Part III opens on May 24th; you can watch the most recent trailer here.  I’ll have set visit interviews with the cast, writer and director coming up, but hit the jump for 45 things to know about the upcoming film.

When a group of journalists visited the set of The Hangover Part III late last year, we half expected Ken Jeong to leap naked out of the trunk of a car or hurl himself out of an ice machine.  No such luck; he only leapt on the bed of a Tijuana hotel and started shooting (blanks) at (animatronic) roosters.  After he had his fun, Jeong participated in a roundtable interview in which he talked about his skyrocketing career, his character’s relationship to the Wolfpack, doing more action and stunts in this film and wrapping up the concluding chapter of The Hangover trilogy.

Just before Thanksgiving of 2012, a group of journalists were invited to the set of Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part III, where screenwriter Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II) participated in a roundtable interview.  Mazin talked about the plan – and the difficulty – of drafting a concluding film for The Hangover trilogy, just how many places the story will take the Wolfpack, familiar faces who will reprise their roles and new characters – like John Goodman as a “very dangerous man” – who will take us by surprise.

The first TV spot for Todd Phillips’ The Hangover Part III is now available.  The short teaser shows glimpses of where the Wolfpack is headed for the concluding chapter in their trilogy and it ain’t all in Vegas.  Instead of a bachelor party blowout or a wedding to attend at the last second, the guys appear to start off at a funeral before participating in a prison riot, running for their lives in the desert and buying a giraffe.  Classic.

I realize that it’s a little too March to be discussing my favorite holiday gifts, but I only recently had the opportunity to dive into one of mine and, as a result, I feel the need to share it’s greatness with our readers. The ESPN 30 for 30 Collector’s Set Blu-ray is an outstanding collection of sports documentaries that is rife with social commentary and almost sure to have something for sports and/or documentary fans alike. Before I get accused of paid programming, I’ll disclaim that all thirty of its films aren’t home runs (that’s right, a sports pun). Moreover, I’m fairly sure that all of the series’ entries are available to watch instantly on Netflix right now making the physical collection redundant for some. Regardless of how you partake, I encourage you to sift through the series, find a topic that interests you, and give it a shot.

All recommendations aside, this week’s Top 5 features a healthy portion of Iron Man 3 coverage (including the new trailer), Oz the Great and Powerful interviews with Sam Raimi, James Franco, Mila Kunis, and more, the first trailer for The Hangover Part III, a sizable Justice League movie rumor, and the new trailer and poster for Will Smith and Jaden Smith‘s After Earth. • The Hangover Part III – We previously knew that director Todd Phillips’ trilogy closer would at least be spending some time in Las Vegas, and this image shows Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms filming scenes inside Caesar’s Palace.
• Dom Hemingway – Star Jude Law is looking plenty intimidating as the lead opposite Madalina Ghenea in this crime comedy about a safe-cracker who gets out of prisoner and sets out to obtain what he’s owed.
• Horns – Daniel Radcliffe stars as a young man who wakes up to find himself accused of the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend and sprouting horns on his head.  Harry Potter looks sufficiently troublesome in these set photos as fights back against a couple of cops.

Ken Jeong (Community) spent his time in The Hangover as a mean, naked gambler that hit so hard; he returned in The Hangover Part II, but [spoiler alert] spent the better part of the movie presumably dead.  In The Hangover Part III, Jeong’s role will be substantially more involved.  Plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment, but we do know that the story takes place in Tijuana and may include breaking Alan (Zach Galifianakis) out of a mental institution.  Jeong’s schedule is being massaged to avoid conflicts with Community, which shoots this August, while The Hangover Part III is set to begin in September.  THR also reports that the threequel will feature the return of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and director Todd Phillips.
