New set photos have gone online for the 1940s crime drama Gangster Squad, and for Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s comeback film The Last Stand. Back in September, we saw Gangster Squad set photos of co-stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone enjoying a lovely day in the park. The new set photos show Stone and co-star Sean Penn sharing a scene, and Stone looks particularly glamorous. I’m a big fan of the setting, and the costumes look terrific.
And some costumes look a little stranger. The first set photo from Kim Ji-Woon‘s The Last Stand shows Schwarzenegger along with co-stars Luis Guzman, Johnny Knoxville, and Jaimie Alexander. I’m not sure why Alexander and Schwarzenegger are holding tommy guns if the film is set in the present day, but I’m even more confused by Knoxville’s outfit. It looks like a modified version of Kang-ho Song’s costume from Ji-Woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird. While I work out my bafflement, hit the jump to check out the set photos. Gangster Squad opens October 19, 2012. The Last Stand opens January 18, 2013.

Filming has begun on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comeback film The Last Stand and the movie has added two more actors to its cast. Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker and masochist Johnny Knoxville have signed on to Kim Jee-Woon’s crime drama. Schwarzenegger will play sheriff of a sleepy border town who serves as the last line of defense against a drug cartel leader (Eduardo Noriega) headed for the Mexican border. Harry Dean Stanton, Rodrigo Santoro, and Luis Guzman have also been announced to co-star.
There’s currently no word on who any of the supporting actors other than Noriega will play. Whitaker recently signed on to star in the voodoo thriller Vipka, and Knoxville will co-star with Patton Oswalt in an untitled comedy from Todd Rohal. The Last Stand also stars Harry Dean Stanton, Rodrigo Santoro, Luis Guzman, Zach Gilford, and Jaimie Alexander. Hit the jump for the press release, which includes the full synopsis.

A formidable foe has finally been chosen to square off against Arnold Schwarzenegger in his comeback project Last Stand. Variety reports that Eduardo Noriega (Blackthorn) has been cast as the villain in the action pic. The story centers on the sheriff of a sleepy border town who serves as the last line of defense against a drug cartel leader headed for the Mexican border. Noriega will play the cartel leader, fleeing to Mexico with $400 million in tow. Kim Jee-Woon is directing, and the cast includes Rodrigo Santoro, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford and recent addition Jaimie Alexander.
Spanish actor Noriega’s resume includes Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone and Alejandro Amenabar’s Open Your Eyes. Schwarzenegger is currently filming a stint in The Expendables 2, photographic evidence of which was tweeted earlier today showing Schwarzenegger standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. Last Stand opens January 18th, 2013.

Jaimie Alexander, who played Sif in this summer’s Thor, has landed herself a prime role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Governator’s comeback film The Last Stand. Directed by Kim Jee-Woon, the film centers on the Sheriff of a sleepy border town who is the only thing that stands in the way of a drug kingpin headed for Mexico. Variety reports that Alexander will play “a beautiful cop under Schwarzenegger’s command” who strikes up a romance with an officer played by Rodrigo Santoro. Peter Stormare and Zach Gilford also star in the pic, which is set to begin shooting later this month in Albuquerque. Alexander is expected to return for Thor 2. The Last Stand opens January 18th, 2013.

We have a couple quick casting stories to report. First up, Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) has joined Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback’s film The Last Stand. Directed by Jee-woon Kim (I Saw the Devil), The Last Stand “centers on a disgraced LAPD cop who is now the sheriff of a sleepy border town. When a drug kingpin is headed for Mexico with a hostage and entourage in tow, the sheriff is the only thing that stands between him and freedom across the border.” Deadline has no details on Gilford’s character but reports that shooting is just getting underway in Albuquerque. Gilford’s a solid actor who had a tendency to get overshadowed by his FNL co-stars, but he’s a quality addition to any cast.
The Last Stand is due out January 18, 2013. Hit the jump for casting news for Stuart Blumberg’s Thanks for Sharing.

Any day with two Arnold Schwarzenegger-related stories is a good day. Earlier we reported that The Governator is confirmed to return in The Expendables 2, and now comes word that Peter Stormare is in final negotiations to star as Schwarzenegger’s foe in The Last Stand. Kim Jee-Woon (I Saw the Devil) is set to direct the western which will serve as Schwarzenegger’s return to acting following his sabbatical as Governor. The actor stars as the sheriff of a sleepy town near the Mexican border who is the last line of defense between a drug kingpin on the run and Mexico.
Variety reports that Stormare will play a seasoned war veteran who acts as the main villain’s right hand man. George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) wrote the latest draft of the script. The Last Stand is slated for release on January 18, 2013.

We’ve got a couple of new release dates for you today. First up, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the big screen following his sabbatical as Governator The Last Stand has been slated for a January 18th, 2013 release (per Box Office Mojo). Directed by Kim Jee-Woon’s (I Saw the Devil), the western centers on a disgraced LAPD cop who is now the sheriff of a sleepy border town. When a drug kingpin is headed for Mexico with a hostage and entourage in tow, the sheriff is the only thing that stands between him and freedom across the border.
Additionally, Alexander Payne’s first directorial project since 2004’s Sideways, the drama The Descendants, is set to open in limited release on November 23rd, one full month before its previous release date. The film stars George Clooney as a wealthy landowner in Hawaii whose wife suffers a serious boating accident, leaving him to take care of their two daughters on his own. The film opens against Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, The Muppets, and Piranha 3D, but the November release sets it up nicely for an awards season run. Yesterday, we reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger would make his return to film in director Kim Jee-Woon’s (I Saw the Devil) western The Last Stand. Tonight, Lionsgate has confirmed the ex-Governor’s involvement in the pic and has released a detailed plot synopsis in the process. Per the release, The Last Stand will see Schwarzenegger take on the role of Sheriff Owens, a former LAPD officer who begins patrolling a sleepy border town shortly after a botched operation leaves his former partner crippled. Hit the jump to check out the complete synopsis. As we reported yesterday, The Last Stand is budgeted at around $30 million and is expected to begin shooting this September.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plans to revitalize his acting career hit a snag when, to the surprise of no one, it was revealed he had a love child with his maid. Projects like Terminator 5, Cry Macho, and The Governator fell by the wayside, but now Deadline is reporting that the ex-governor plans to “test his post-scandal popularity” with Kim Ji-Woon’s western The Last Stand. This implies that Schwarzenegger had pre-scandal popularity and I seriously doubt that he did, or at least nowhere near as much as he had before he became governor.
We reported back in April that Schwarzenegger was in talks to play “a border sheriff who must keep an escaped drug dealer from crossing into Mexico.” A Lionsgate exec tells Deadline, “It’s an old-fashioned Western specifically designed for a 63-year-old broken-down guy with a moral decision whether Arnold decides to stand up for his town. We always needed an iconic figure for it.” So it’s High Noon? Actually, Ji-Woon (I Saw the Devil) previously said that it was a mix between Die Hard and High Noon, so that sounds good. Last Stand is budget for $30 million and is expected to start shooting this September.

With Arnold Schwarzenegger’s announcement that he’s ready to get back into acting following his tenure as Governator of California, the interwebs have been brimming with chatter as to what film Schwarzenegger will choose for his triumphant return. A new Terminator perhaps? Maybe True Lies 2? Well, now it looks like the actor may have settled on his next flick, and I’m a bit relieved to say it’s a wholly original film.
/Film has confirmed Movieweb’s report that Schwarzenegger is almost locked in a deal with Lionsgate to star in accomplished South Korean director Kim Ji-Woon’s first English-language film The Last Stand, written by Andrew Knauer. Hit the jump for more on the project.

Yesterday, we reported that Mel Gibson had been dropped from his cameo as a Bangkok tattoo artist in Todd Phillips’ The Hangover 2. Today, Variety is reporting that Liam Neeson will play the role. While Neeson isn’t a controversial choice by any stretch, it’s also ultimately a cameo. Mike Tyson was fun in the first movie, but The Hangover was a success because of a strong script, smart direction, and hilarious lead performances, not because of a cameo (that was spoiled in the trailer anyway). I’m sure Neeson will do a fine job, but no one should be writing off or celebrating the sequel based on this news alone. The Hangover 2, which is due out on May 26, 2011, has the guys and their shenanigans headed to Thailand.
Neeson will next be seen in theaters this November in Paul Haggis’s The Next Three Days followed by the thriller Unknown. He recently filmed what Variety is calling another cameo-sized role in Peter Berg’s Battleship. Neeson is scheduled to begin filming on Joe Carnahan’s survival drama The Grey in January and will follow it up with more shooting on Battleship and then reprise his role as Zeus in Clash of the Titans 2. He’s also attached to Ji-woon Kim’s The Last Stand and Brad Siberling’s low-budget war drama An Ordinary Man.
