FX Renews THE LEAGUE for Fourth Season

The League fans rejoice! FX has renewed the comedy for a fourth season. THR reports that the network has ordered 13 episodes of the series from creators Jackie and Jeff Shaffer. The semi-improvised comedy centered around a fantasy football league has had a stellar third season thus far, averaging series-high ratings with 1.7 million total viewers and 1.5 million in the all-important 18-49 demographic. FX exec vp original programming Nick Grad had nothing but high praise for the show, saying “The League continues to be one of our most successful comedy series both creatively and from a ratings standpoint.”

The show stars Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannazzisi, and Paul Scheer and has drawn a considerable number of guest stars including Seth Rogen, Wil Forte, Sarah Silverman, Matthew Berry and Chad Ochocinco. Season three is currently winding down on FX now, with a few more episodes left until the season finale on December 22nd.

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for FX Networks, President and General Manager John Landgraf took some time to talk about the growth of their comedies – Wilfred, Louie, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League and Archer – the strength of their dramas – Sons of Anarchy, Justified and Rescue Me – their hopes for their new shows, including American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy, and what they are looking for, in the future.  Here are the most interesting points:

• In 2011, FX is on track to achieve the highest ratings in all measures, in the 17-year history of the channel, up 17% in adults 18-49 and 18% in total viewers in prime. They have also achieved their goal of programming original dramas and comedies, all year round.
• FX has ordered a Season 8 and 9 of the acclaimed hit comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia with an option for a Season 10, making it the longest-running live-action comedy in basic cable history. In addition, FX Productions is entering into a three-year exclusive television overall deal with RCG – the production company run by Sunny creators/executive producers Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton.
• The full 13-episode third season of Archer will return in January 2012, with three episodes airing this Fall, behind the first three episodes of Season 7 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which premieres on September 15^th. The Season 3 premiere of The League will debut after Sunny on October 6^th.
• Wilfred was the highest-rated first season of a comedy ever on FX, leading them to renew it for a second season of 13 episodes, while Louie has also been renewed for third season of 13.
• American Horror Story, from Glee executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, is being established as a serialized saga that can go on for multiple years, with subsequent seasons either taking place in the past or in the present, depending on how the story unfolds.
• Powers (in the vein of David Fincher’s Seven or Zodiac),  based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming and starring Jason Patric, and Outlaw Country, a family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime, are the next two drama pilots that FX will be looking at for possible pick-up

FX Announces Fall Schedule for SONS OF ANARCHY, IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, ARCHER, THE LEAGUE, and AMERICAN HORROR

FX has sent out a press release laying out their fall schedule.  The network’s fall season will kick off on Tuesday, September 9th at 10pm with the 90-minute season premiere of Sons of Anarchy.  On Thursday, September 15th at 10pm, the new season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will begin.  FX’s newest show, American Horror, will premiere on Wednesday, October 5th at 10pm.  The following night at 10:30pm, the new season of The League begins.  Finally, Archer will get a special three-week run starting on Thursday September 15th in hopes that it can expand its audience by having It’s Always Sunny as its lead-in.  New episodes of Archer will air on September 15, 22, and 29th and then will return for its new season in earnest (although the word “earnest” should never be used when writing about Archer) in early 2012 with a 13-episode season.

THE LEAGUE First Season Blu-ray Review

The League’s based on a premise unimaginable only a couple years earlier. No, The League has nothing to do with superpowers, it’s a fantasy football league that Pete (Mark Duplass) has won for three years straight. But, regardless of the thing that brings them together, the idea of men getting together to compete and act stupid is timeless and The League has assembled some crack comic performers and improv vets to pull it off, including Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannazzisi, Jonathan Lajoie and Katie Aselton. The results show more promise than actual results in the first year (often the case with comedies), but there’s enough here to think that the show might come together eventually, there’s no lack of talent, and it regardless of if you play fantasy football or not. THE LEAGUE Season 1 DVD Review

Up until a few years ago, FX was home to dramas, action movies and re-runs. Then It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia came along and changed the whole equation. Last summer FX ordered pilots for three new comedy series’: Archer, Louie, and The League. All were successful enough to warrant second seasons but it was The League that was most talked about. Take a subject all guys love (fantasy football), mix in adults acting like teenagers, add some hilarious improvised banter, throw in some more football references for good measure and you have The League. Continue reading for my review of the first season as well as information about the DVD and special features. Season 2 of The League currently airs Thursdays at 10:30 on FX.
