Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns was on CNBC this morning to talk about what lays ahead for the studio.  In between touching on possible business deal with Summit Entertainment and talking up The Hunger Games, Burns also provided some new updates on some of the studio’s upcoming projects.  Here are the quick and dirty bullet points:

It will be interesting to see how Lionsgate attempts to balance Lincoln Lawyer both as a TV series and a film franchise.  Is Matthew McConaughey enough to draw out an audience that can already get the character at home?  Can the lead in the TV series out-McConaughey McConaughey? (The answer to the second question is “No.”)  Hit the jump to watch the full interview with Burns.

With Breaking Bad season three hitting DVD and Blu-ray next week and season four starting next month, I was able to get on the phone with Bryan Cranston earlier today to talk about the amazing series. As most of you know, the show’s about a brilliant high school chemistry teacher that finds out he’s dying. To help provide for his family after he’s gone and also to pay for medical treatment, he gets into cooking crystal meth.  The past three seasons has seen Cranston’s character slowly become another person, and it’s been an amazing ride.  Trust me, this is a show you should be watching and Cranston’s work is amazing.  That’s probably why he won a few Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

During our conversation, Cranston talked about his take on the first three seasons and what’s coming up on season four.  He also talked about the level of difficulty in starting up again after a year between seasons, his preference between knowing the entire season’s storyline in advance or sticking to one script at a time, and the possibility of Breaking Bad mini episodes (he says no).  Cranston went on to discuss other film projects like The Lincoln Lawyer, director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, Rock of Ages, Larry Crowne, and Len Wiseman’s Total Recall.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

Adaptations of Michael Connelly’s THE BLACK ICE and THE BLACK ECHO Move Forward

For many, The Lincoln Lawyer has been a bit of a surprise hit. It received shockingly good reviews and is doing okay at the box office. So it makes sense that we’re seeing movement now on two more Michael Connelly adaptations: The Black Ice and The Black Echo. Deadline is reporting that those two novels, both written by Connelly who also penned the book The Lincoln Lawyer was based on, are being adapted for film by producers Soren Staermose and Ole Sondberg’s Swedish production company Yellow Bird. Yellow Bird is best known for it’s adaptation of the Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

All this comes off of the heels of Connelly suing Paramount for the rights of both books. Paramount has had the rights to both The Black Ice and The Black Echo since 1992, but has stalled the projects on numerous occasions. Both novels center around Connelly’s main character, LAPD detective Harry Bosch. The character has been at the center of 16 of Connelly’s novels and will hopefully be hitting the screen sometime in the near future.  Hit the jump for synopses of The Black Ice and The Black Echo.

Estimates for Friday’s top five are in, though I’d caution you to not make too much of those positions.  Aside from a clear number one in Relativity’s Limitless, less than one million dollars separates the remaining four films – meaning these numbers are almost meaningless!  Analysis with extra ambiguity when you check back tomorrow!

Title Friday Total
1 Limitless $6,500,000 $6.5
2 Battle: Los Angeles $4,500,000 $50.5
3 Paul $4,400,000 $4.4

Trace Adkins Interview THE LINCOLN LAWYER

In The Lincoln Lawyer, adapted from the best-selling novel by Michael Connelly, country music star Trace Adkins plays Eddie Vogel, the leader of a motorcycle gang that keeps crossing paths with charismatic defense lawyer Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey). When Haller finds himself defending rich playboy Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), it turns into the case of a lifetime and the attorney who usually represents petty criminals finds himself needing Eddie’s intimidation factor.

At the film’s press day, Trace Adkins talked about being able to closely identify with his character, his approach to acting compared to singing in an arena full of people, the challenge of making movies, being the star of his own comic book, which he hopes will be adapted for film someday, and how he’s working on music for a new album that he plans to release in the Fall. THE LINCOLN LAWYER Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 18th, 2011 at 7:09 am

lincoln-lawyer-movie-image-matthew-mcconaughey-ryan-phillipe-slice-01

The majority of Matthew McConaughey’s filmography for the last decade could be charitably described as “less-than-good” and uncharitably described as “an abomination”.  Even McConaughey seemed unengaged from the material in a way that seemed to say, “Yeah, these movies are crap, but I’ve got a million-dollar smile and unlike most men, I look even hotter when I’m sweaty so the ladies love me.  Enjoy Fool’s Gold.”  There’s a greasy charm to the majority of his performances and his rom-com “appeal” (I use that term loosely) has overshadowed his genuinely good work in more dramatic films like Lone Star and Frailty.

And yet it’s McConaughey’s smug huckster attitude that elevates The Lincoln Lawyer from a forgettable legal drama to a breezy, exciting thriller that’s ironically only slowed down when McConaughey lessens his bravado to take a swing at the story’s more dramatic beats.

The slick lawyer who has made a career out of working the justice system to the advantage of his clients becomes determined to correct his mistake and free his innocent former client from jail, while working around the attorney-client privilege for which a violation will cost him his license forever.

At the film’s press day, Michael Peña talked about the appeal of this small but memorable role, the fear of being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, the challenge of crying on film, and how he enjoys doing both comedy and drama. Ryan Phillippe Interview THE LINCOLN LAWYER slice

In the mystery thriller The Lincoln Lawyer, actor Ryan Phillippe plays wealthy playboy Louis Roulet, who is charged with attempted rape and murder. After his arrest, he seeks out slick criminal defense attorney Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) to take on his case which, on the surface, appears to be very straightforward with a big money pay-off. Things quickly start to turn into a cat-and-mouse game between two masters of manipulation, as Haller begins to wonder what else Roulet might have gotten away with, in his past.

At the press day for the film, Ryan Phillippe talked about how he had to audition and fight for this role, what it took to get into the mind-set to play Louis Roulet, his reasons for keeping his distance from co-star Matthew McConaughey, and how much he enjoyed working with director Brad Furman. He also talked about his next project, Chronicle, about the distribution of marijuana, which he starts filming soon in New York. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
