The debut of The Book of Eli on Friday may have knocked Avatar out of the spot it had been occupying, more or less unchallenged, for the past 28 days but, as expected, that was just a temporary hiccup. And with Monday a holiday, that means that Avatar should clear the $500 million mark within the next 24 hours.

With Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones getting released around the country this weekend, it’s time to post the video interviews I got to do with Jackson and most of the cast. The reason I got to speak with everyone is our partners at Omelete were invited to the international press day and they sent me to cover it.  So a big thank you to them for making this happen.

The Lovely Bones is based on the novel by Alice Sebold and it’s about a 14-year-old girl named Susie Salmon who is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer-the man she knew as her neighbor. From heaven, Susie keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case.  The film stars Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli and Saoirse Ronan.

During my interview with Susan Sarandon we talked about Brazil, the SNL Digital Short Mother Lover, playing a fun character in a film filled with tragedy, Wall Street 2, and what else she’s working on.  Check it out after the jump:

Peter Jackson Developing Phillip Reeve’s MORTAL ENGINES as Feature Films?

by Keith Demko    Posted: December 22nd, 2009 at 10:48 am

slice_mortal_engines_peter_jackson_01.jpg

The New Zealand newspaper Dominion Post is reporting that Peter Jackson, whose new movie The Lovely Bones made its limited U.S. debut Friday, is now at work on “secretly” adapting Phillip Reeve’s quartet of Mortal Engines fantasy novels for the big screen.

The paper reports the project is in early development, with work on a movie about the first of four books under way and Weta Workshops “believed to be” working on the giant mobile cities that populate the novels. None of this was given any further verification than “industry sources say,” and a spokesman for Jackson told the newspaper only “any comment should come from Peter.”

So, what are the books about? They take place in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a nuclear showdown called the “Sixty Minute War.” To avoid the earthquakes left in its wake, the world becomes divided into immense mobile cities known as Traction Cities, which often battle each other for supremacy. Just the possibilities of what Jackson could do with all that sets the mind reeling.

Weekend Box Office – $25 Million for Disney’s THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: December 13th, 2009 at 10:19 am

After two weeks of sold-out shows in New York and LA, Disney sent The Princess and the Frog out to multiplexes nationwide this weekend. It’s been over ten years since little girls had a new Disney Princess to coo over and weeks since an all-ages family film graced a movie marquee, which is why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Princess replaced The Blind Side as the number one film domestically. What is a bit surprising, to me at least, is how average the estimated grosses for Disney’s much-hyped feature turned out to be.

Title Weekend Total
1 Princess & the Frog $25,000,000 $27.8
2 The Blind Side $15,450,000 $150.2
3 Invictus $9,085,000 $9
4 New Moon $8,000,000 $267.3
5 A Christmas Carol $6,871,000 $124.4
6 Brothers $5,000,000 $17.4
7 2012 $4,400,000 $155.3
8 Old Dogs $4,396,000 $39.9
9 Armored $3,500,000 $11.7
10 Ninja Assassin $2,710,000 $34.3

Opening today in New York and Los Angeles is director Peter Jackson’s latest film The Lovely Bones.  Based on the Novel by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones is about a 14-year old girl named Susie Salmon who is murdered on her way home from school.  From heaven, Susie keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her killer and the detective working on her case.  The film stars Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli and Saoirse Ronan.

To help promote the film, our partners at Omelete were invited to the international press day and they sent me.  But rather than wait till Christmas Day when the film will be playing in a lot more of the country, I’ve decided to slowly post the video interviews with the cast over the next few weeks, with Michael Imperioli up first.  In the film, he plays the detective working the case.

During our conversation we talked about if he still has to research when playing a cop or a gangster, working for Peter Jackson, is he on Twitter/Facebook and what does he think about social networking, we talk about Life on Mars, and we end our conversation chatting about the upcoming HBO show Boardwalk Empire and why isn’t he on it.  If you’re a fan of Michael Imperioli, I’m confident you’ll like the interview.  Take a look:

While it’s taken a little while to get to movie screens, director Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones finally hits theaters next weekend – if you live in New York and Los Angeles.  If you’re not in one of those cities, you’ll have to wait till Christmas Day.  The film is based on the Novel by Alice Sebold and it’s been written by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson.  Here’s the synopsis:

On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer–the man she knew as her neighbor, Mr. Harvey.

To help promote the film, we’ve been provided with five clips.  Check them out after the jump and look for our interviews with the cast very soon:

Exclusive: Peter Jackson Talks LORD OF THE RINGS Blu-ray and Says THE HOBBIT is Still 2011

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 4th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

peter_jackson.jpgWith Peter Jackson promoting his latest movie The Lovely Bones in Los Angeles this weekend, our partners at the Brazilian website Omelete asked me to interview him earlier today – along with the entire cast.  While we’ll be posting the full interviews closer to release, I was able to get updates from Jackson on both the Lord of the Rings Blu-rays and what is really up with The Hobbit release date.

In case you hadn’t heard, The Hobbit was originally scheduled to be released in December of 2011 and December of 2012 (it’s a two part movie).  But earlier this week, reports hit the net that the first part wouldn’t be released until 2012 as they are running late on delivering the scripts.

But when I asked Peter Jackson about the release date a few hours ago, he told me, “You don’t want to believe everything you read on the internet.” According to Jackson, the plan is to still release the first film in 2011!  Check out part of the interview after the jump.  He also talks about what’s up with the LOTR’s Blu-ray:

THE HOBBIT Filming Delayed; Peter Jackson Explains

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 30th, 2009 at 10:23 am

The Hobbit movie slice.jpg

With Peter Jackson promoting his new movie The Lovely Bones around the world, we’re getting a lot of updates on the project every Lord of the Rings fans is dying to see: The Hobbit.  While filming was scheduled to begin early next year on the two films, Jackson told the German website MovieReporter.net (via TheOneRing)

“We’re currently working on the second script which we hope to have completed by the end of this year or beginning of next.  When the scripts are completed, we can begin with the exact calculation of the necessary budget.  We hope to start filming in the middle of next year. However, we’ve received no green light from the studio yet.”

Now before you get too excited and think Warner Bros. isn’t going to make these films, think again.  The Lord of the Rings franchise made the studio an enormous amount of money and nothing is going to stop this project from moving forward.  What is probably happening is the studio wants to see both completed scripts and also a total budget before giving the official go ahead.  No word if a delay in filming will cause the original December 2011 and 2012 release dates to get moved.

Early Buzz on THE LOVELY BONES

Earlier today we ran a story featuring a new poster and two new clips from Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones.  While a couple of the reviews are glowing, the others range from negative to lukewarm with the nature of the adaptation and the emphasis on the visuals as a major point of contention.  Hit the jump to read excerpts from the reviews of Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Total Film, Screen Daily, The Guardian, The Sun, and AintItCool.

New Poster and Clips for Peter Jackson’s THE LOVELY BONES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 24th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

slice_lovely_bones_poster_01.jpg

A new poster plus two new clips for Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones have come online.  The poster is similar to the previous poster except this time the sunset colors are no match for the dark presence of Stanley “The Tooch” Tucci.  There are also two new clips and I find them both unsettling because they have no subtlety and they rely on Brian Eno’s score to tell the audience what they already know to feel.  This combination gives the impression of a cheesy movie and I’m hoping that, like the trailer, this is just an inept sell of a better movie.  I really like Alice Sebold’s book and I know Jackson has the talent to pull this off, but my cautious optimism is slowly becoming just caution.

Hit the jump to check out the new poster and the two new clips.  The Lovely Bones hits theaters on December 11th.

First Poster for Peter Jackson’s THE LOVELY BONES

by Michael Sullivan    Posted: October 8th, 2009 at 11:30 am

slice - The Lovely Bones movie poster Peter Jackson.jpg

Dreamworks has released the poster for Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones,” based on the novel by Alice Sebold about a girl who watches her family cope with her death from the afterlife once she’s raped and murdered by a serial killer who’s gearing up to strike again. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that this film is going to be visually stunning. Peter Jackson’s rendition of “the in-between”–a Heaven-like limbo–is rich with color and spectacle, which is enough to get me in the theater at least. Not to mention, I’m interested to see Jackson do something that’s not a gore-fest horror or epic fantasy. Check out the poster after the jump.
