Nominations for the First Annual Comedy Awards

Last month, we found out Comedy Central and MTV Networks were putting together The Comedy Awards, a broadcast awards event to honor the best comedy films, actors, TV series, digital content and stand-up acts. The Comedy Awards will be taped on March 26th for a premiere on Sunday, April 10th which will be simultaneous broadcast on Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, VH1 and Nick At Nite. Now the nominations for the awards’ debut have finally been revealed, and they mostly hit the nail on the head. There’s love for big comedies like The Other Guys and Get Him to the Greek, but lower profile films like Cyrus and Tiny Furniture get some love too. Since we’ve been covering Faster extensively over the past few months (click here to read our coverage), you know this is Johnson’s return to kicking ass and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve said many times that while I understand why Johnson made those family films, I’ve always thought he should be one of the biggest action stars on the planet.

Anyway, for the final chapter of Faster The Chronicles, we landed an exclusive interview with Johnson.  During our 45 minute phone interview, Johnson talked to us about making Faster, who he plays in Fast Five and what the movie is about (he was filming in Atlanta when we spoke), how he got involved in The Other Guys, his thoughts on 3D, would he be interested in The Expendables 2, and, of course, I asked about Peter Berg and will we ever get a Rundown 2.  Hit the jump to check it out:

If conventional wisdom says that Sylvester Stallone and Julia Roberts are has-beens, than someone clearly forgot to tell their audiences. Both stars are looking like winners today – especially Sylvester Stallone and his oldies action-hero reunion tour, otherwise known as The Expendables.

The Depressing but Educational End Credits for THE OTHER GUYS

One of my favorite things about The Other Guys is that corporate criminals were the bad guys in the movie.  And then that appreciation became sweet, sweet outrage when the end credits rolled and featured facts about how the average American was still being screwed over by the wealthy.  It’s one thing to have a vague idea of that screwing, but when you see it all laid out in numbers and graphics, it really hurts.

But knowledge is the best weapon against this kind of corporate crime and disgusting avarice that succeeds in part because it’s too difficult for most people to understand how it works.  So hit the jump to check out the end credits to The Other Guys.  They’re not funny, but they’re definitely worth your time.

Eva Mendes “Pimps Don’t Cry” Music Video from THE OTHER GUYS

If you’re like me, you like booze, fast cars, fast women and Will Ferrell. If you aren’t like me than go away because I don’t like anyone not like me. With that out of the way, a video has been produced for “Pimps Don’t Cry”, a song Will Ferrell and the slinky Eva Mendes tenderly sing to each other in The Other Guys. It doesn’t approach the same level of profane, raunchy frat boy irreverence as Step Brothers “Boats ‘N Hoes”, but it’s still a quick fun watch. The video features the always sexy Eva Mendes and Cee- Lo trading verses about the perils of pimpdom. Considering its origins, it’s a pretty good track and the video sports all kinds of cool 70’s exploitation editing and visuals. Weekend Box Office – THE OTHER GUYS Tops INCEPTION with $35.6 Million

No surprises here. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and The Other Guys were expected to take number one this weekend and they did – earning an estimated $35.6 million from 3,651 locations – knocking Inception down to number two for the first time in four weeks.

Friday Box Office – THE OTHER GUYS Take First with $13.2 Million

For the second Friday in a row comedy is king at the box office. The Other Guys, the latest effort from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, pulled in an estimated $13.2 million in its debut at 3,650 locations. That puts the action comedy on track for a $35 million weekend – easily enough to knock off Inception as the country’s number one film after three weeks. Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster was third on Friday, though its continued staying power should afford it a second place finish by Sunday. Which brings us to Step Up 3D. The dance extravaganza launched in 2,435 locations on Friday – a big 75% of which featured all three glorious dimensions. The sequel’s estimated first day take was $6.6 million: the same amount that Step Up 2 the Streets made on day one back in February 2008. That points to a third place finish in the $16 million range for the weekend. That’s higher than I expected for a movie with no plot… even one in 3D.

THE OTHER GUYS Review

Much like its two lead characters, The Other Guys features two very different styles that should be discordant but somehow combine into a harmonious success.  Director Adam McKay has managed to take the absurd comedy he’s applied to his past films (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers) and team it with a parody of the buddy-cop flick.  The result is unmistakably an Adam McKay-Will Ferrell picture, and while the chemistry between the leads could be strong and the comedy can be uneven at times (particularly in the third act), The Other Guys is an discordant success.

Right before Comic-Con, I got to sit down with writer-director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights) to talk about his new comedy The Other Guys.  Starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two New York City police officers that finally get in on the action, the film is a home run for all involved because not only is the movie incredibly funny, it manages to successfully weave in what’s really going on in the world as part of the storyline.   Unlike some action films where the villain is so unrealistic it detracts from the story, The Other Guys takes the opposite approach with great results.

Anyway, during my exclusive interview with McKay, we talked about the challenges of making a movie with a lot of action, filming on location in New York City, working with Mark Wahlberg and when did he know he could be so funny, the improv process, how he’s a comic book junkie, and he gave me an update on The Boys.  Hit the jump to check it out:

A few weeks ago I posted part of my exclusive interview with Mark Wahlberg that covered The Raven, The Brazilian Job (the sequel to The Italian Job), Five Brothers (the sequel to Four Brothers), Cocaine Cowboys and The Fighter.  But with the awesome comedy The Other Guys opening in a few days, it’s time to post the entire conversation.

The thing to know is…if you’re a fan of director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell movies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights, you’re going to love The Other Guys.  And while I always thought Mark Wahlberg was a great actor, I’ll admit to being very surprised he could do comedy so well.  Trust me, when you see Wahlberg and Ferrell on screen together, you’re going to love their chemistry.  Anyway, during the interview we talked Boston sports, when did he know he would work so well with Will Ferrell, doing improv, future projects, Comic-Con, and a lot more.  As always, you can either read the transcript or listen to the audio after the jump:

Will Ferrell’s THE OTHER GUYS Character Alan Gamble Wants You to Join the NYPD

I caught The Other Guys last night and it’s a good flick and I’ll obviously go into more detail about it when I post my review Thursday night.  In the meantime, FunnyOrDie has posted a great video of Will Ferrell’s character in the movie, Detective Alan Gamble, recording a recruitment ad for the New York Police Department.  It’s a good way to promote the movie because it doesn’t spoil any of the jokes.  The most it lets you know is that Gamble is pranked and berated by his fellow cops.  The results are pretty damn funny and, for better or worse, Ferrell provides the comic delivery you’ve come to expect from him.

Will Ferrell Exclusive Interview THE OTHER GUYS; Plus His Thoughts on ANCHORMAN 2 Falling Apart

Over the last six years, director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell have made some classic comedies.  If you’re not familiar with their resume… Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Step Brothers and their latest film, The Other Guys.  Like I said in the intro to the press conference with Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton and McKay, the movie is extremely funny and it’s going to do huge business at the box office.

At the recent Los Angeles press day for the film, I was able to get an exclusive interview with Will Ferrell.  As a huge fan since his days on Saturday Night Live, I’ll admit to being incredibly excited to have landed a one on one interview.  Thankfully, Ferrell was beyond cool and we spent about ten minutes discussing Mark Wahlberg and Adam Mckay, doing press, rehearsal versus improv, and I got his reaction on Anchorman 2 falling apart over budget.  Yes, the reason we’re not getting the sequel to Anchorman is the studio not wanting to spend the money.  I’m as disappointed as all of you.  Hit the jump for the interview.  I’ve offered the transcript and the audio:

There are two very important things to know about writer/director Adam McKay’s (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers) The Other Guys:

1. The movie is extremely funny.

2. While press conferences are usually terrible, The Other Guys press conference was one of the best I’ve covered in five years.

Thankfully, Sony let me video tape the entire thing, so you can watch Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton and Director Adam McKay do improv for about 40 minutes with hysterical results. The thing to know about press conferences is, no matter how good they are, the studios never let you use video, and trying to write up great back and forth banter is nearly impossible.  But now that the studios are finally taking a more 21st Century approach to interviews (i.e. letting us use video), I’m optimistic this is a sign of things to come.

Trust me when I say, if you’re a fan of Will Ferell and Adam McKay movies, you REALLY want to watch this press conference.  Especially since they talk about how to keep your pimp hand strong and when asked what they’re favorite cop movies are…the answers are awesome.  Also, make sure to watch Wahlberg’s reactions to some of the questions and answers…it’s priceless.

Sony has released five movie clips from director Adam McKay’s (Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Other Guys and you can check them out after the jump.  The movie stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Ray Stevenson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne Johnson.  I caught a screening a few days ago and am happy to report I absolutely loved this movie. If you’re a fan of McKay/Ferrell movies, get ready for another awesome movie.

As you’ve probably seen in the trailer and TV spots, Ferrell and Wahlberg play partners that never get in on the action.  But due to landing a great case, their fortunes might change.  Trust me, you’re going to love this film.  For a taste of what’s to come, check out the clips:

Just a few hours ago I was interviewing Mark Wahlberg for the upcoming comedy The Other Guys.  While I’m not supposed to say too much about what I thought, trust me when I say it’s an awesome comedy that had me laughing from beginning to end.  If you’re a fan of Adam McKay and Will Ferrell movies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights, you’ll love it.  And Ferrell and Wahlberg’s chemistry is perfect.  It’s a great comedy.

Anyway, while I’ll be posting my full exclusive interview with Wahlberg closer to the August 6th release of The Other Guys, since he gave me updates on The Raven, The Brazilian Job (the sequel to The Italian Job), Five Brothers (the sequel to Four Brothers), Cocaine Cowboys and David O Russell’s The Fighter, I figured you’d like to get those updates today.   Hit the jump for more:
