It didn’t claim the record for highest debut or the greatest attendance, but this year’s Super Bowl weekend still caught most box office watchers by surprise with two bigger-than-expected openings. Fox’s Chronicle was first with $22 million from 2,907 locations, but CBS Films’ The Woman in Black was right on its heels with $21 million from 2,855. That’s the first time that two titles have opened to over $20 million on a Super Bowl frame since… ever.

Weekend box office reports rely on estimated numbers and, as of Sunday morning, the estimates are just too close to call a definitive winner. The way it looks at the moment, Adam Sandler’s Just Go With It is slightly ahead of the Justin Bieber: Never Say Never: $31 million to $30.3 million. The crowning of the number one film, therefore, may have to wait until official totals are released on Monday morning.

Last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live with host Dana Carvey had a high ratio of movie-related comedy, kicking off with Carvey reuniting with Mike Myers for a Wayne’s World segment that breaks down the Oscar nominees. Neither Wayne nor Garth have seen it, but naturally their favorite film of the year is Winter’s Bone.
There was also a parody of The Roommate (starring Justin Bieber and Andy Samberg Sir Ben Kingsley), insight into the ubiqutous James Franco (“I like having jobs!”), and a slew of celebrity impressions including Ice-T, Eddie Murphy, and Anna Faris. View the clips after the jump.
Super Bowl weekend is not known for its huge debuts – 2010 being the notable exception. And with much of the country still dealing with their endless winter nightmares and the rest transfixed by the game, this weekend has a good excuse for its low numbers.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | The Roommate | $15,600,000 | $15.6 |
| 2 | Sanctum | $9,225,000 | $9.2 |

Surprise! The low-budget Pg-13 thriller The Roommate scored a first place opening at Friday’s box office. The film’s estimate of $6.4 million from 2,534 locations is nearly double that of the second-place Sanctum. You’ve heard of Sanctum? It’s the 3D movie that producer James Cameron has been plugging pretty relentlessly for the past week or so. Friday was the one chance that the more male-skewing title had to make some coin before this weekend’s Super Bowl festivities. Instead, it looks like female-driven titles like The Roommate and No Strings Attached (still strong on its third Friday) have the advantage from the beginning. We’ll be back with full coverage and analysis tomorrow, although one wonders who will be paying attention…
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | The Roommate | $6,400,000 | $6.4 |
| 2 | Sanctum | $3,500,000 | $3.5 |
| 3 | No Strings Attached | $2,900,000 | $46.2 |
| 4 | The King’s Speech | $2,300,000 | $78.1 |
| 5 | The Rite | $1,900,000 | $20 |
| 6 | The Mechanic | $1,785,000 | $16.5 |

In Minka Kelly’s first leading role in Screen Gems The Roommate, she plays a freshman at the fictional University of Los Angeles, whose roommate (Leighton Meester) quickly reveals herself to be a psychopath. The actress, who is mainly known for her work on the television series Friday Night Lights, proves to be a very likeable on-screen presence.
I was fortunate to speak with Kelly last Saturday where we discussed: her excitement at her first leading film role, how filming on two university campuses (Loyola Marymount and USC) gave the film believability, how a final fight scene in the movie was physically and emotionally taxing, and finally her recount of how shooting Friday Night Lights on location gave the cast a focused mentality. Cam Gigandet has a history of playing the bad guy—Twilight, Never Back Down, and my personal favorite, as “Volchok” on The O.C. In his new film The Roommate, out Friday February 4th, Gigandet plays the heroic drum-playing boyfriend to Minka Kelly’s character, who is being terrorized by her college roommate (played by Leighton Meester). Gigandet takes a fairly conventional role and legitimately makes his character funny. He and his cast mates manage to make this film actually very entertaining.
As tempted as I was to reminisce about The O.C, I resisted. During the interview we talk about his continued loathing of press junkets, how working with Leighton and Minka allowed the dialogue to feel spontaneous, how Leighton genuinely freaked him out, and lastly how he feels about supporting versus leading roles. I’m of the opinion that Gossip Girl truly works because of the depth Leighton Meester gives to her character, Blair. She is hilarious as the quick-witted Queen Bee, but then affectingly vulnerable in other scenes. She brings this same duality to each role she plays, and in particular, elevates what’s would be a standard teenage horror flick into a much more character driven movie, in her latest work, The Roommate.
I had the opportunity to briefly talk with her last Saturday after seeing the film the night before. During the interview we talk about: her personal scariest horror movie, her process of relating to her character, how the director crafted fear through what’s not said, what influences her in choosing roles, and lastly what advantages she sees to filming her television show in New York. The Roommate, co-starring Minka Kelly and Cam Gigandet and directed by Christian Christensen, is in theatres this Friday, February 4th. Hit the jump to watch the interview.

Opening this Friday is Screen Gems psychological thriller The Roommate. Starring Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Cam Gigandet, Aly Michalka, Danneel Harris, Frances Fisher, and Billy Zane, the movie is about a deranged college freshman (Meester) who becomes obsessed with her new roommate (Kelly). Over the next few days, we’ll be posting video interviews with the cast, but until then, we’ve got three clips and a new featurette. Hit the jump to check them out.

Screen Gems has released the trailer for their upcoming horror film The Roommate starring Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights the TV series). The film is about a young woman (Kelly) who discovers that her college roommate (Meester) is a little too over-protective/psychotic/murderous. Worst. Freshman year. Ever. The Roommate looks like an important cautionary tale about setting boundaries with your new college roommate. And if she doesn’t have any other friends, then that bitch is crazy.
Hit the jump to check out the unintentionally hilarious trailer. The Roommate opens February 4, 2011.

Per boxofficemojo.com, Sony’s Screen Gems has shuffled the release dates for a few of its upcoming films. Thriller The Roommate, starring Leighton Meester, has been bumped from September 17th to February 4, 2011. Crime thriller Takers, starring Idris Elba and Matt Dillon, originally set for release on May 14th, moves to August 20th. Underworld 4, which will see director Len Wiseman return to the helmer’s chair of the action-horror franchise, has been bumped from January 21, 2011 to September 23, 2011; moreover, according to boxofficemojo.com, the film will apparently not be shot in 3D, despite previous reports. Another action-horror title, Priest, starring Paul Bettany, will be getting the 3D treatment (in post-production) and, as a result, has been bumped from August 20th to January 14, 2011. Finally, high school comedy Easy A, starring Emma Stone, has been assigned a September 17, 2010 release date.
Finally, Universal’s sci-fi actioner Repo Men, starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, has been bumped up from April 2nd to March 19th.
