As I sit here in my blue jeans and Catholic University sweatshirt, really as about as glamorous as I ever get, I can’t help but wonder how in the world I ended up reviewing a documentary about the inner workings of U.S. Vogue.
For anyone who doesn’t know, The September Issue is a behind-the-scenes look at all the work that goes into producing the magazine’s biggest annual issue, which clocks in at a rather amazing 800+ pages, and its stars are Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and creative director Grace Coddington. And though it could have easily turned into a vanity piece designed to refute the fictionalized portrait of Wintour in The Devil Wears Prada, it’s instead an engaging portrait of the creative process.

The fashion world is not one I particularly understand but I do think its drama is easily conveyed, hence the success of “The Devil Wears Prada” and TV shows like “Project Runway” and “Ugly Betty”. The documentary “The September Issue” focuses on Vogue’s biggest issue of the year and its Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour’s power and direction in guiding that issue to press. This isn’t the kind of documentary that’s necessarily for me but that doesn’t mean it won’t work as a film. Movies can be entertaining and compelling even if you’re not inclined towards the subject matter. While this trailer [via Yahoo! Movies] does slide a little too much on the side of implying how much Wintour is like Meryl Streep’s “Devil Wears Prada” character, hopefully it won’t cut away from the nitty-gritty of the magazine’s production in favor of cutting barbs and catty comments.
Check out the trailer after the jump. “The September Issue” hits New York on August 28th and expand nationally on September 11th.
