Two of TV's funniest families have their sights set on possible feature treatments, but they may not show up on screens any time soon. Matt Groening's hit animated series The Simpsons, now in its 24th season, already has one successful feature film under its belt, but don't expect another one any time soon. Arrested Development-creator Mitchell Hurwitz is currently experiencing a rejuvenation of the family comedy series thanks to a fourth season production at Netflix. So how long will it be until a movie deal gets made for the Bluth and Simpsons families? Hit the jump to find out.

Fans of The Simpsons Movie who want a follow-up feature may be waiting quite a while. THR reports that Groening and producer/director David Silverman have no plans to produce another movie for 10-15 years. Here's Groening's reasoning:

While Arrested Development has far fewer characters, Hurwitz admits to The Playlist and Vulture that it has too much story to tell in one season:
"[All] of this was to be act one of this bigger story that we have, in a lot of detail, actually, for the movie. What we don't have is a movie deal. Know anybody?”
So while there's unfortunately no deal in place, Hurwitz does ...

In lieu of one massive TV ratings article for the week, we’re going to start bringing you daily updates on the goings-on in the TV world. We’ll report ratings estimates the day after shows air, and today we’ve got the numbers for Sunday night’s programming. Briefly:

Showtime had a great night as Dexter scored its highest-rated season opener ever with 2.4 million viewers for its season seven premiere.
Coming off a near-sweep at the Primetime Emmy Awards, Homeland was up 60% for its second season premiere with 1.73 million viewers.
ABC’s Once Upon a Time returned incredibly strong with 11 million viewers and a 3.8 rating in the 18-34 demographic.
Also on ABC, the series premiere of the “haunted hotel” drama 666 Park Avenue couldn’t pull in big numbers, as the Terry O’Quinn-fronted show netted a 2.2 rating for 7 million viewers.
Hot on the heels of the news that creator Seth MacFarlane will be hosting this year’s Oscars, the season premiere of Fox’s Family Guy was down 20% from last year’s season opener with a 3.3 rating and 6.5 million viewers.

Hit the jump for all of Sunday’s ratings including Revenge, American Dad, The Simpsons, The Mentalist, and more.
SHOWTIME

Showtime's long-running serial killer series Dexter continued its crazy streak of going up in the ratings with each subsequent season premiere, as the season seven opener drew 2.4 million viewers. Last season's game-changing cliffhanger probably had a bit to do with the large numbers, but reviews for the new season have been highly positive coming off of a lackluster season six.
	The Best ...

Now entering their 25th year, The Simpsons entertained fans at Comic-Con in a panel that included Matt Groening, Yeardley Smith and Al Jean, moderated by David Mirkin. As a long time Simpsons fan who has lost interest in recent years, it was nice to see that the jokes still land as the cast and creative team premiered an upcoming Halloween episode and the full release of the short, The Longest Daycare. Hit the jump for more on The Simpsons panel and be sure to follow along with all of our continuing Comic-Con coverage.

Mirkin headed off the panel with a look at the upcoming Halloween episode, titled “The Greatest Story Ever Holed,” which capitalized on the recent discovery of the Higgs’ Boson, the so-called “God particle.” Much speculation surrounded the CERN experiments with the Large Hadron Collider and many thought the tests would generate a black hole that would swallow the Earth. The Simpsons writers clearly had a field day with this, as a small black hole begins gobbling up everything in sight and eventually spits the family out on an alien homeworld.

After viewing the Halloween episode, the panel fielded a Q&A:

When asked about the potential for developing a Broadway play around the Simpsons, they said haven’t talked about that but love to have those types of creative discussions.

Groening: I did have an idea to have Dan Castellanetta (the voice of Homer) to read Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey

Would the creators ever make a semi-permanent change that lasts longer than an episode?

A few fleeting seconds from The Simpsons 3D short The Longest Daycare arrived on the web today. Debuting in advance of Ice Age: Continental Drift on July 13, the dialogue-free 4 and a half-minute adventure will follow Maggie Simpson as she returns to the “Ayn Rand School for Tots.” Upon entry, our pint-sized hero is pegged as “Nothing Special” by a security/potential scan. Keeping with their pre-established motto of “Helping is futile,” she’s left to fend for herself in the school’s least savory wing; here she must truly develop the bottle within to survive a confrontation with arch nemesis Gerald (aka that baby with the unibrow). Hit the jump for a super-quick preview of The Longest Daycare…and seriously, try not to blink.

I can’t watch any modern-era Springfield hijinks without pining for the transcendence of the earlier seasons (That “rock and A Hard Place” gag from the family’s first big screen foray still sends a chill down my spine). That being said, Maggie Simpson has undoubtedly aged the best of her clan, still supplying some of the show’s biggest laughs when she gets a chance to participate.

Moreover, this adventure does represent a return to classic Simpsons territory, the Rand school having debuted in Season 4 episode “A Streetcar Named Marge”. That one contained a very Maggie-centric B-story in which she rebels against the oppressive ideals of her day-jailers and leads an uprising. Needless to say, this short won’t rise to Season 4’s giddy heights, but I ...

With Comic-Con 2012 just around the corner, word is starting to leak out about what movies and TV shows will/won’t be making an appearance. We have a good idea of the film panel slate in Hall H, and now official word regarding TV panels is trickling down. As a quick reference guide, we’ve rounded up the TV panels that have been confirmed thus far in one easy article. Briefly:

	Thursday – MAD, Nikita
Friday – The Big Bang Theory, Arrow, Bones, Childrens Hospital, Cult, 666 Park Avenue, Brickleberry, Bob’s Burgers, The Venture Bros, NTSF:SD:SUV, Robot Chicken, Black Dynamite
Saturday – Glee, The Vampire Diaries, Revolution, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Person of Interest, Futurama, The Following
Sunday – Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, Supernatural, DC Nation, The Cleveland Show

Hit the jump for more details, including which actors will be in attendance and where the panels will take place. Comic-Con 2012 will run from July 11 – July 15.

Before the actual panels take place, there will be pilot screenings for Arrow, Revolution, The Following, Cult and 666 Park Avenue in Ballroom 20 on Wednesday night. This is only a partial list, as we should also expect panels for Game of Thrones, True Blood, The Walking Dead, etc. Though it’d never happen in a million years, I would be at a panel for HBO’s Girls in a heartbeat. To hear Lena Dunham and co. talk about the twistedly hilarious situations that must have inspired some of the show’s scenes/storylines would be incredibly entertaining. Alas, that’s about ...

Yesterday we got a look at what NBC will be offering by way of scheduling and new series this fall, and now Fox has announced their upcoming 2012 schedule. As far as shifts for returning series go, the Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch has been moved to Fridays, while Ryan Murphy’s Glee (which has been on a ratings downslide as of late) has been put in the post-X Factor/American Idol slot on Thursday nights. Moreover, the network announced that Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson will be doing guest star arcs on Glee for the show’s upcoming fourth season.

As far as new shows go, The Office star Mindy Kaling’s new show, currently titled The Mindy Project (hopefully a temporary title), and the new ensemble comedy Ben and Kate will join Raising Hope and the hit Zooey Deschanel series New Girl on Tuesdays for an all-comedy night. I’m a huge fan of New Girl and I’m hoping The Mindy Project will be a nice companion show. Another high profile new series, Kevin Williamson’s serial killer show The Following starring Kevin Bacon, has been slated to premiere at midseason. Hit the jump to get a look at the full Fox schedule.

Here’s the Fox Fall 2012 schedule, followed by the full press release. Check back later today to get a look at trailers and synopses for all the new Fox series.

It was only a matter of time before The Simpsons set its sights on Game of Thrones. Tonight's episode of The Simpsons used Game of Thrones' stunning opening credits as the basis for the couch gag and the animation did not disappoint. Since we've known since the end of Game of Thrones' first season that season two of would be in spring 2012, I wouldn't be surprised if The Simpsons had this couch gag waiting and aired it to coincide with Game of Thrones' upcoming season premiere.

The 2012 Annie Awards were held last night, and critical favorite Rango ended up deservedly taking home the Best Animated Feature award. Gore Verbinski’s quirky western also took home the award for Best Writing in a Feature Production, Best Editing, and the Members Favorite Award, but lost Best Directing to Kung Fu Panda 2’s Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Bill Nighy won Best Voice Acting for Arthur Christmas, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes took home the Character Animation in a Live Action Feature Production award.

On the television side of things, The Simpsons was awarded the top prize as well as Best Directing and Best Writing. Heading into the Academy Awards, Rango is our clear frontrunner. The Adventures of Tintin was pegged as the film’s biggest competition at the Oscar ceremony, but the Steven Spielberg film was ultimately left out of the nominations. Hit the jump to see the full list of Annie Awards Winners.

Frankly, not one episode of The Simpsons, other than my annual viewing of The Treehouse of Terror has gotten my attention. Until now. TV Line has word that Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, the dynamic duo who brings the funny on IFC's sketch comedy series Portlandia will provide their voices to an episode of The Simpsons. Normally guest stars like that wouldn't get me all that excited, but their involvement is essentially a cross over of their live-action characters from Portlandia into the animated world of Springfield. The episode entitled The Day the Girls Stayed Cool will see Armisen and Brownstein playing part of a “cool” family that moves from Portland to Springfield and becomes the Simpsons’ new neighbors. Homer desperately tries to befriend them, but Marge is skeptical that being cool isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. We probably have series creator Matt Groening, a Portland native, to thank for this bit of genius. The episode will air sometime in the show's 24th season later this fall.

In twenty-plus seasons The Simpsons has produced nearly 500 episodes, a motion picture and innumerable amounts of merchandise. The creative minds behind the series include names like Conan O’Brien, Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol), and James L. Brooks among others. Through the years, the show has retained the original cast who have expanded beyond the primary characters to really flsesh out the Springfield community. Where would the show be without Ned Flanders or Milhouse or to a lesser extent, Duffman? Countless celebrities have made their way through Springfield while the titular family has become nearly as recognizable as Mickey Mouse. For a show that began as a handful of minute-long interstitials, The Simpsons has evolved into a pop culture institution. And for good reason. In its prime, The Simpsons was the best-written, best-performed, most subversive on television. Since the height of its popularity in the late 80s to mid-90s, other shows have caught on and caught up to the Simpson formula.

The show itself had covered so much ground by the 14th season that it began retreading on familiar territory. While there were still moments of brilliance in the show, the consistent quality of the first decade had started to wane. Hit the jump for my full review of season 14 of The Simpsons on Blu-ray.

Because The Simpsons airs on network television and because the show’s popularity happened parallel to the rise of recordable media, true fans of the series already know most of the episodes by heart. Season ...
