Ken Marino and Joe Lo Truglio are two members of one of the best sketch comedy groups of all time, The State. Their show ran on MTV back during the mid-to-late 90's, and for anyone that grew up during that period, The State was a comedy force to be reckoned with. In the years since The State, Marino and Lo Truglio have gone on to bigger and better things: Marino created and starred in Starz' dearly-departed service-industry comedy Party Down, while Lo Truglio has popped up in a number of great comedies-- Superbad, and this month's Paul, just to name a few. Collider.com's Scott Wampler sat down with Marino and Lo Truglio in Austin, TX recently to chat about their upcoming projects, including a potential Party Down movie, their horror film, Burnt, and their next collaboration with director (and former State member) David Wain, Wanderlust. Read on for that interview after the jump, folks...

If you were born in the 80's and raised in the 90's, MTV's The State was probably one of your preferred sketch-comedy shows (assuming you have good taste in sketch comedy, of course). Like HBO's Mr. Show, The State was an absurdist-comedy showcase featuring a sprawling cast of comedians (and, in The State's case, one comedienne) who all went on to bigger and better things once their show wrapped up: Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant went on to write a few blockbuster comedy scripts in addition to creating (and starring in) Comedy Central's Reno 911; Michael Ian ...

A few days ago we reported FX had ordered a part-scripted/part-improvised science fiction comedy pilot called Alabama from Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant, the screenwriters and creators behind Reno 911! The synopsis was:

"Set a thousand years in the future, the show follows the crew of the space ship USS Alabama as they continue a seven-year mission to maintain interplanetary peace."
Since the idea sounded awesome, I decided to do a little more digging and managed to land an exclusive interview with Thomas Lennon. During the interview he revealed:

They only have an order for the pilot
Call it "Reno 911! meets Battlestar Galactica." In their mind it’s not really a Star Trek parody
They're shooting the pilot either end of September-beginning of October and they want it to feel like Das Boot.
He said he thinks Natasha Leggero will be on it and a lot of Reno 911! regulars. He also said "I wouldn’t be surprised if the series has a few people from The State."
There is a major also overarching plot to the entire series and there’s two twists in the series that have sort of already been designed. Also, they know how it ends no matter how long the series goes.
"There may be some characters on the show who are puppets. There will certainly be some characters on the show who are cyborgs. So it’s just Reno 911! with a much larger buffet of problems to choose from."
Regarding costumes: "No one’s ever going to be in like sort of clean like ...

If you're a fan of the Harold and Kumar movies, you probably know Kal Penn, John Cho and the rest of the cast are currently filming the third installment, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D, in Michigan right now. As you most likely noticed from the title, the third installment is being filming in 3D (NOT post converted) and I'm sure the filmmakers are going to offer many new and innovative ways to watch smoke being inhaled and exhaled in 3D. As a big fan of the franchise, I can’t wait to see it.

Anyway, I was able to get on the phone with Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!, The State, Night at the Museum) yesterday to talk about a few of the projects he working on and of course we talked about his work in Harold and Kumar. While I knew his character was named Todd, he revealed he's Harold's new best friend and "the best way to describe him is he’s the anti-Kumar in every way." He went on to say "he is a douchey, uptight white person." He also confirmed the movie gets released Christmas of 2011 and they're using the double Genesis camera system for the 3D.

But the best news he told me was "there’s a tremendous amount of pot in the movie and a lot of nudity." When pressed for more…he told me they were filming naked nuns taking a shower yesterday. While we all knew there would be no shortage of weed in the film, ...

If you're a fan of the movies Role Models, The Ten, and the TV show The State, you'll be happy to learn Judd Apatow told MTV he's going to be producing David Wain/Ken Marino's next movie which will star Paul Rudd. The plan is to shoot this fall and it'll be officially announced soon. No other info has been released. However, if they're shooting this fall, the film could be released as soon as next summer. It all depends on special effects and post production.

While some of you might have missed out on Role Models, it's a very funny comedy that's definitely underrated. Do yourself a favor and check it out. And it goes without saying The State is worth your time. More as we hear it.

A lot of time when you've waited anxiously for something for a long period of time, when that special something finally arrives in your greedy little paws, it turns out to be a bit of a disappointment. I was worried that my rose-colored glasses might have the better of me after the decade and a half wait for The State to come out on DVD. About five minutes into viewing, I realized the worry was for naught - this collection can still make me laugh all these years later. The nice thing - it will make you laugh too. My review is after the jump:

The State aired on MTV during the mid-1990s. For me personally, these were formative early high school years and I can credit at least a portion to whatever sense of humor I've developed as a person to their antics. The cast consisted of ten men and one woman who joined together during their college years. For the uninitiated, the format is akin to The Kids in the Hall, with a series of skits and male members often dressing up as female characters. The fertile creative talent behind this series spilled out to create and inspire with RENO 911!, STELLA, Viva Variety, and Wet Hot American Summer.

If someone were composing a dissertation on comedy from the 1990s though today, the cast of The State could act as one-stop shopping with highlights in both the acting and writing arenas. Thomas Lennon (I Love You, Man, 17 Again) is ...
