Weekend Box Office: HUNGER GAMES Tops Again for Fourth Weekend in a Row with $21.5 Million

The Hunger Games cannot be stopped.  Director Gary Ross’s adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins book took the top spot at the box office for the fourth weekend in a row with $21.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $337 million with a worldwide haul over $479 million.  Though Lionsgate is presumably extremely happy with The Hunger Games’ performance, they’re currently on the lookout for a director replacement for the sequel Catching Fire after Ross declined to return due to the tight schedule.  They have to start filming the follow-up this August in order for star Jennifer Lawrence to be wrapped in time to move on to the X-Men: First Class sequel in January, and to make Catching Fire’s November 2013 release date.  Hit the jump for details and analysis of the full top 10.

Friday Box Office – THE HUNGER GAMES Fights Off THE THREE STOOGES and THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Despite three new wide releases this weekend, The Hunger Games is back at the top of the box office for the fourth (and not necessarily final) Friday in a row, adding another $6.5 million to its terrific $322 million domestic total.  The Three Stooges came in second with a $5.6 million opening day, which may be just enough to relaunch the franchise if the movie has legs.  The Cabin in the Woods trailed in third, premiering to $5.5 million.  That’s not a great total for a movie we love so much, but it could be much worse.  Look no further than Lockout, which landed outside the top five to a paltry $2.2 million, beat by last week’s offerings American Reunion and Titanic 3D.  Look for details and analysis on the full weekend tomorrow.

THE THREE STOOGES Review

Faithfulness to source material can be a double-edged sword.  When the faithfulness arises not out of fear of angering a fanbase, but from the love of the filmmakers for the material, then at the very least you have something good-hearted and genuine.  But faithfulness can also be a crutch and impediment to creativity.  The Farrell Brothers have a difficult time in striking the balance between good-hearted humor and slavish devotion in their adaptation of The Three Stooges.  They keep the eponymous characters as lovable misfits, and when they’re playing to the characters’ stupidity, the Farrellys have an enjoyable comedy on their hands.  But when they also lean far too much on Moe slapping around his brothers and Curly’s various tics, The Three Stooges becomes a movie that will only appeal to kids.

Chris Diamantopoulos Talks THE THREE STOOGES, Honor in Reviving the Characters, and the Audition Process for Moe

After being left on the doorstep of an orphanage run by nuns, newborns Moe, Larry and Curly grow up under the tutelage of Mother Superior (Jane Lynch), Sister Mary-Mengele (Larry David) and Sister Rosemary (Jennifer Hudson) in The Three Stooges. Now adults (and played by Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso), they set out to save their childhood home, but quickly become embroiled in an oddball murder plot (at the hands of Sofia Vergara and Craig Bierko), with all of the pratfalls and slapstick comedy that they’re famous for.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Chris Diamantopoulos talked about what it was like to embody Moe, how he got the role after a four-and-a-half-month-long auditioning process, the moment when he felt like he had really found the character, his most memorable moment on set as The Stooges, how he dislocated his shoulder and broke a finger doing their various pratfalls, what made filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly the right guys to bring The Three Stooges back to life, and the two hours of deleted bits that could end up on the DVD.  He also talked about his role on the NBC comedy series Up All Night (starring Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph), who he plays in the heist comedy The Black Marks (with Kurt Russell and Matt Dillon), and how he would love to do a James Bond type of action-drama.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, the always funny and charming Jane Lynch talked about talked about her first exposure to The Three Stooges, how blown away she was to see them brought back to life so meticulously, how she got involved with the film, her most memorable moment with Larry David, working with Jennifer Hudson as a singing nun, wearing a nun’s habit in Atlanta in the summer, and what made Peter and Bobby Farrelly the right filmmakers to bring The Three Stooges back to life.  She also talked about voicing a character for the Disney animated feature Wreck-It Ralph, about a character from a 1980s video game who wants to get out of his game and into a more high-tech one, her role in A.C.O.D. 6 Clips from THE THREE STOOGES

Six new clips from The Three Stooges have gone online.  Yes, the movie looks terrible, but it also looks like it’s staying true to the source material.  The problem is that staying true to the source material and then trying to transport it into a modern setting doesn’t look like it will work.  There’s also the argument that the movie is for kids, who will enjoy the slapstick and goofy sound effects.  Unfortunately, there probably aren’t a lot of kids who are die-hard fans of a 1930s comedy trio.  It all comes back to “Who is this movie for?” and I don’t have a good answer.  But I will say this: Fox is screening the movie for critics, and despite the cringe-worthy trailers and clips, I’ll do my best to give the movie a fair shake when I see it in its entirety.

Final Trailer for THE THREE STOOGES

Fox has released a new trailer for The Three Stooges.  The trailer tries to bill Larry (Sean Hayes), Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Curly (Will Sasso) as the original “Jackasses”.  It is like a Jackass if Jackass were fake, family friendly, and featured goofy sound effects to accompany the slapstick.  Directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have clearly paid a loving tribute to the Stooges, but this trailer and the previous one show that the Stooges’ humor isn’t going to translate to modern audiences.

First Trailer for THE THREE STOOGES

Fox has released the first trailer for The Three Stooges, directed by the Farrelly Brothers.  Will Sasso, Sean Hayes, and Chris Diamantopoulos star as Curly, Moe, and Larry in the new feature, divided into three segments.  It looks awful, but in a fascinating way.  This has been a passion project for the Farrellys and the final result makes me wonder: could The Three Stooges ever work in the present day?  Doesn’t their slapstick seem quaint while their antics come off as obnoxious?  And yet there’s also something mean-spirited mixed in.  I’m sure the Farrellys thought, “Hey!  Let’s poke Snooki in the eyes!  That will put the audience on our side!”  I almost feel sorry for Snooki.  Almost.

The film also stars Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Hudson, and Larry David.  The Three Stooges opens on April 4, 2012.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

First Look at THE THREE STOOGES

A couple weeks ago, we showed you a couple glimpses of The Farrelly Brothers‘ The Three Stooges.  USA Today has now provided the first full look at Curly (Will Sasso), Larry (Sean Hayes) and Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos).  Sasso looks like Sasso, but Hayes and Diamantopoulos have definitely been transformed into their characters.  For those unfamiliar with the project, The Three Stooges isn’t a biopic or even one full narrative, but instead it stay true to the original shorts by having the film divided into three segments.  And even though the Farrelly Brothers have made their names on gross-out PG-13 and R-rated comedies, they have promised to keep this movie PG.  I can’t doubt the Farrellys devotion and admiration for The Three Stooges and hopefully that will translate to a movie that honors the characters and provides plenty of laughs.

Teaser Image and Poster for The Farrelly Brothers’ THE THREE STOOGES

The Farrelly Brothers’ almost have almost reached the finish line with their long-in-development passion-project, an adaptation of The Three Stooges.  The project was once a big-budget affair with Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benecio Del Toro set to play the titular knuckleheads.  Then the project fell apart and looked pretty much dead until the Farrellys were able to resurrect it with far less expensive actors.  The movie now stars Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, and Will Sasso as Curly, and we now have a glimpse of the actors in character (above) plus a silhouette poster bearing the tagline “Just Say Moe.”  You can’t really go wrong with a pun based on an outdated anti-drug slogan.

Fox Sets THE THREE STOOGES for April 4, 2012 Release Date

The Farrelly brothers’ feature film version of The Three Stooges now has a release date. THR reports that the Stooges movie will open on April 4, 2012. The flick will hit theaters on a Wednesday, two days before it goes head-to-head with the American Pie sequel American Reunion, the thriller The Cold Light of Day, and of course the 3D re-release of James Cameron’s Titanic.

The Three Stooges stars Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, and Will Sasso as Curly. The movie will be made up of three segments, just like the shorts, with the brothers trying to save their childhood home, stumbling upon a murder plot, and ending up on a reality TV show. Honestly, this film sounds like a disaster, but I’d like nothing more than to be pleasantly surprised. The cast also includes Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, and Sophia Vergara.

Sean Hayes Talks THE THREE STOOGES and Producing the Upcoming NBC Drama GRIMM

The upcoming NBC drama Grimm takes place in a world where the villains of fairy tales that children have adored for generations are real, and one man, Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) is the only one who can stop them. At the NBC portion of the TCA Press Tour executive producer Sean Hayes (best known as Jack McFarland on Will & Grace, but also currently the executive producer on the TV Land comedy series Hot In Cleveland) talked about his success as a producer, what he enjoys about juggling acting and producing, and his return to being in front of the camera, in a comedy for the network.

He also talked about the recently wrapped role he completed as Larry (with Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe and Will Sasso as Curly) in the Farrelly brothers’ version of The Three Stooges, the great co-stars they had in the film, and what a privilege it was to be a part of bringing something back to life that changed comedy forever. Sofia Vergara Talks SMURFS, MODERN FAMILY, NEW YEAR’S EVE and THE THREE STOOGES

About a week ago, I had the pleasure of talking to Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) in anticipation of her family film, The Smurfs. The film follows the adventures of six Smurfs who are accidentally transported to modern-day New York City. In The Smurfs, Vergara plays Odile, an executive at a cosmetics company who is the boss of Neil Patrick Harris’ character. I had a lot of fun with the movie and kids will absolutely love it.

During my exclusive interview, we discussed bossing around Harris, Sofia’s earliest memories of the Smurfs, and her upcoming work in Happy Feet Two, New Year’s Eve and, of course, The Three Stooges. I also got a brief update on the next season of Modern Family.  Watch the interview after the jump.

Promo Posters for THE HOBBIT, THE HUNGER GAMES, BATTLESHIP, and More

With the 2011 Licensing International Expo currently underway in Las Vegas, many promo posters have started hitting the net.  Yesterday we posted the promo poster for The Avengers as well as the promo posters for The Amazing Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania, and more.  Continuing the barrage of advertising, we now have promo posters for The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Battleship, The Three Stooges, The Lorax, 47 Ronin, The Croods, The Bourne Legacy, Rise of the Guardians, Stretch Armstrong, RIPD, Fast & Furious 6, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.  It’s worth noting that the promo poster for Fast & Furious 6 says the film is due out in 2013, which isn’t too surprising.  More intriguing is that the poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is simply titled “Dragons“.
