Time Traveling is a concept usually reserved for science fiction titles; an idea which makes a compelling idea for flights of fancy, but rarely ever useful for other stories. The Time Traveler’s Wife, a film based from the 2003 novel, tries to destroy this commonly held notion, and apply it to the love story genre, attempting to give audiences something new, while also obtaining viewers from multiple genres. Unfortunately, the film is much like the idea of time travel itself; it is entertaining, but extremely confusing and almost impossible to make a reality.  More after the jump:

After a fairly good opening weekend gross ($20 million) ABC has announced that they will be teaming up with “Friends” creator Marta Kauffman to adapt “The Time Travelers Wife” into a weekly TV series. I know some of you might be groaning but you can read some of my thoughts on why I think this might be an excellent idea after the jump.

It’s all good news for director Neill Blomkamp’s once-mysterious sci-fi movie “District 9″.  The film, produced by Peter Jackson, rounded out its first three days with a remarkable $37 million from 3,049 dates.  While that total certainly isn’t anywhere near the top weekends of the summer, when the film’s budget of $30 million is weighed along with the fact that most Americans had never heard of either Blomkamp or “District 9″ a couple of weeks ago, the term ‘remarkable’ may even be an understatement.

Title Weekend Total
1 District 9 $37,000,000 $37,000,000
2 GI Joe $22,500,000 $98,800,000
3 Time Traveler’s Wife $19,205,000 $19,205,000
4 Julie & Julia $12,400,000 $43,684,000
5 G-Force $6,908,000 $99,049,000
6 The Goods $5,300,000 $5,300,000
7 Harry Potter 6 $5,155,000 $283,893,000
8 The Ugly Truth $4,500,000 $77,502,000
9 Ponyo $3,500,000 $3,500,000
10 (500) Days of Summer $3,025,000 $17,955,000

Friday Box Office – DISTRICT 9 Kicks Some Alien Ass with $14.2 Million Opening

Amid rumblings of mid-August inventory-clearing, no fewer than five new titles hit the multiplexes this weekend.  But for most of us there were only two questions that Friday’s box-office results needed to answer: how high could Neill Blomkamp’s “District 9″ climb and how far would Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe” fall?  As for the former, the Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi flick parlayed its great word of mouth into a first place finish with over $14 million from 3,049 locations.  “Joe” was not so lucky.  Last week’s top seed fell a big 68% on Friday to third place behind the maudlin posturing of Eric Bana in “The Time Traveler’s Wife”.   Check back tomorrow for full coverage of the rest of this weekend’s new releases.

Title Friday Total
1 District 9 $14,200,000 $14,200,000
2 Time Traveler’s Wife $7,700,000 $7,700,000
3 GI Joe $7,000,000 $83,400,000
4 Julie & Julia $3,600,000 $34,900,000
5 G-Force $2,100,000 $94,200,000

If you’re a fan of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife”, you’ve been waiting a long time to see director Robert Schwentke’s adaptation in movie theaters. But with Warner Bros. releasing the film this weekend, the wait is finally over.

So to help promote the film, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with the two stars of the film, Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. During the interview they talked about making the film, why it took so long for the movie to get released, the challenges of making a time travel movie, and a lot more. Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin Interview THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE

Writing any movie is difficult, no matter if the script is fiction or non-fiction. But while writing any script is hard work, trying to write a movie based on a very popular book like “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is an almost impossible task. After all, you’ve got to leave out scenes that might work on the page, but on a movie screen, they don’t further the story. Also, whoever has read the book has their own vision of the movie in their head, so whatever you write won’t be what the reader imagined. So, like I said, it’s a very difficult task. But based on the reaction from the people who read the book, fans of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife” shouldn’t worry, as the people I spoke with really enjoyed the film.

So to help promote the film, I recently attended the New York City press day for “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and got to participate in a roundtable interview with screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (“Ghost”, “Jacob’s Lader”). During the interview he talked about his desire to take on the material, writing the script, how he’s working on the musical of “Ghost”, and a lot more. Take a look after the jump:

If you’re a fan of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife”, you’ve probably counting down the days till director Robert Schwentke’s adaptation hits theaters. I managed to see a screening and thought it was good. I’ll say the women in the audience were loving it, and the people I spoke with that had read the book told me they really enjoyed it. Most said they missed a few things (from the book), but isn’t that true about every movie made from a novel? Anyway, to help promote the film, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with director Robert Schwentke and it’s after the jump. During the interview he talked about why he wanted to make the film, casting Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, his next film “Red”, and a lot more:

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE Trailer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 12th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

the_time_traveler_s_wife_movie_image_eric_bana_and_rachel_mcadams__3_.jpgWhen you see this trailer for the long-delayed adaptation of “The Time Traveler’s Wife”, you’ll understand why it’s been on the shelf for so long–not because it looks bad, but because it’s clearly such a tough sell.  Despite being based off a best-selling novel, a dissolving Eric Bana telling Rachel McAdams’ as a kid that they’re in love is just too prone to mockery.  I mean, what should feel like “Journeyman” by way of “Benjamin Button” instead seems like how a time-traveler would pull pranks or at least how a child or wife would explain their absentee father/husband.  “My husband didn’t leave me!  He dissolved into space-time!  I’m Rachel McAdams, dammit!  What man would ever leave me by choice?”

I’m going to hold on to hope for this flick because the premise and the lead performers are too strong to pass up but…yeesh.

Check out the trailer after the jump.  “The Time Traveler’s Wife” hits theatres on August 14th.
