We recently brought you a new image from Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult classic TV series Dark Shadows, and now we have quite a few words from the director on a few of his upcoming projects. He’s currently in post-production on Dark Shadows, which tells the story of a vampire (played by Johnny Depp) who attempts to reintegrate with his descendants after being buried for 200 years. In addition to talking about the setting, tone, and characters of Dark Shadows, Burton gave an update on the Beetlejuice sequel that Seth Grahame-Smith is writing and revealed that they’ll be testing an IMAX version of Frankenweenie. Hit the jump for all the details.

Tim Burton May Direct PINOCCHIO for Warner Bros.; Robert Downey Jr. Courted to Star

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 6th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Competing projects with the same premise (usually based on a fairy tale) has become a thing as of late, and a new race has just kicked into high gear. Director Tim Burton is interested in directing Warner Bros.’ take on Pinocchio, and he has his eye on Robert Downey Jr. to star as Geppetto. The film tells the story of the woodcarver’s quest to reunite with his missing marionette. While it’s easy to roll one’s eyes at a project like this, the Black List script was written by Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller. If it’s anywhere near the delightfully charming tone of his ill-fated television series, this Pinocchio take could make for quite the feature film. Throw in Burton and Downey Jr. and that’s a whole lot of whimsy. Hit the jump for more.

Christopher Lee Talks THE HOBBIT, HUGO and DARK SHADOWS

In a Christmas address by the incomparable Christopher Lee, the actor remarked on his completed works of 2011 (including a tongue-in-cheek clarification of his role in The Wicker Tree). More notably, Lee also touched on his role in Hugo and his working relationship with director Martin Scorsese, his own personal vitality (Lee will turn 90 in 2012) and his work in Dark Shadows with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Oh and you might have been wondering about his reprisal of the role of Saruman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit movies. Not to worry as Lee goes into some detail about his involvement and it’s safe to say the actor’s work has been completed on both films. Hit the jump to check out the video.

KICK ASS Scribe Jane Goldman in Talks to Pen MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 2nd, 2011 at 2:16 pm

Screenwriter Jane Goldman is close to landing a fairly high profile writing gig sans partner Matthew Vaughn. While Goldman’s past collaborations with Vaughn have included such excellent fare as Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Stardust, Deadline reports that the scribe is in talks with 20th Century Fox to tackle the adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Written by Ransom Riggs, the novel centers on a 16-year-old who visits an orphanage that his grandfather told him stories about, only to discover that the residents may not be as harmless as he was led to believe. Inhabitants include a child whose feet never touched the ground, and another who could hold fire in her hands. Tim Burton is circling the project to direct, and I think Goldman is a fine choice to handle the script.

This won’t be the scribe’s first outing without Vaughn, as she also wrote the upcoming horror film The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe. Goldman and Vaughn are expected to return to pen a First Class sequel, but it appears she may crank out Miss Peregrine’s first. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

Tim Burton May Direct MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

Tim Burton is circling an adaptation of Ransom Riggs‘ novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  According to Deadline, Burton is in talks with 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertaniment to develop the book into a directing vehicle, and he would set the screenwriter.  The story involves a teenager who finds the old orphanage his grandfather used to tell him about, but discovers that its unusual residents may have been more dangerous than he was led to believe.  It’s a story that sounds a little like Big Fish until you thrown in the “dangerous kids” aspect.  At that point, you have Burton doing another horror movie (unless the kids are just “misunderstood”, in which case, booo).

Hit the jump for a synopsis of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children as well as a recap of Burton’s other potential projects.  Burton’s next movie, an adaptation of the 60s cult horror TV series Dark Shadows, opens May 11, 2012.  He also has a stop-motion feature-length adaptation of his short film Frankenweenie due out on October 5, 2012.

Disney has released the first imaged from Tim Burton‘s Full-Length 3D Stop-Motion Animated remake of Frankenweenie.  The movie keeps the black-and-white of his original short film and expands upon the story of a young boy who brings his dog, “Sparky”, back from the dead by using the methods of Dr. Frankenstein.  Burton tells Entertainment Weekly that “Ultimately, we try to go with the slightly more positive aspects of keeping that [boy-and-his-dog] relationship going.”  The images look fine, although as MattPatches astutely points out, Frankenweenie looks a lot like Brad Bird‘s Family Dog.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film features the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin LandauFrankenweenie opens October 5, 2012.

Two Official Set Photos from Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS

Warner Bros. has released two official set photos from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows.  The film is based off the cult TV series of the same name which ran from 1969 – 1973 and centered on vampire Barnabas Collins (played by Johnny Depp) and his attempt to reintegrate with his descendants after being buried 200 years ago.  Burton and Depp decided 1972 was the right time to set the movie. Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith explains to Empire, “1972 is right at the time when the hippie movement and all its peace and love is dying out and being replaced by this me-me-me generation in the ’70s who are all about showing their wealth and having everything.”  Is the film going to act like the hippie movement dying out was a bad thing?  Who likes hippies?

Hit the jump to check out the set photos as well as the College Humor video that immediately sprung to mind when I saw the photos.  The film also stars Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Michelle Pfeiffer.  Dark Shadows opens May 11, 2012.

First Official Image from Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS Starring Johnny Depp

After the leak of disconcerting photos of Johnny Depp in make-up on the set of Tim Burton’s adaptation of the 1960s cult TV series Dark Shadows, Warner Bros. has released a somewhat-reassuring image of the cast.  The look is unmistakably Burton with an emphasis on distinctive costumes (I would say they look retro but the movie is in the 1970s) and daunting architecture.  Oh, and there’s Helena Bonham Carter’s ridiculous bright orange hair and white pancake make-up because Burton clearly can’t help himself.  As for Depp, you’ll notice the whiteface and big blue sunglasses are gone, but this a promo shot and the set photos are from another scene in the movie where his character, vampire Barnabas Collins, has to go out into broad daylight.

Hit the jump to check out the full image along with the official synopsis and descriptions for some of the character.  The film also stars Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Michelle Pfeiffer.  Dark Shadows opens May 11, 2012.

With the craziness that is the Toronto International Film Festival winding down this weekend, things around Collider are slowly shifting back into normalcy (whatever that means). Although I’ll talk more about TIFF after the jump, I’d like to take this space to give Steve, Matt and Phil a big “thumbs up” for a job well done in covering the event. Especially our own Mr. Goldberg who, by my last count, has turned in an impressive 33 film reviews over the last nine days. Kudos, gentlemen. Now, enough with the backpatting…

In this week’s installment, you’ll find our recap of the Raiders of the Lost Ark Los Angeles screening with Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford, the first look at Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, interviews with Drive‘s Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn, an exclusive with Megan Fox where she discusses (among other things) whether or not she has seen Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and all of our TIFF 2011 coverage in one place. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

DARK SHADOWS Set Photos Provide First Look at Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins

The first photos from the set of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation have surfaced online and they reveal Johnny Depp looking about as creepy as you would expect him to look in a Burton film. In case you’re unaware, Dark Shadows sees Depp making a turn as Barnabas Collins, a powerful playboy who is buried alive in the 18th century only to reemerge in 1972 as a vampire who is none too pleased with the ruin of his once fine piece of real estate.

Check out the set photos and an official synopsis after the jump. Also starring Chloe Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Lee and Jackie Earle Haley, Dark Shadows is slated to hit theaters on May 11th, 2012.

Warner Bros. to Reboot BEETLEJUICE; Seth Grahame-Smith to Possibly Write Script; Updates on His Other Projects with David Katzenberg

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 6th, 2011 at 11:01 am

David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith and their KatzSmith production company have signed a two-year first-look deal with Warner Brothers.  One of the first projects under that deal is a Beetlejuice reboot because of course it is.  For those who haven’t seen the original: stop making me feel old.  Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy starred Michael Keaton as the eponymous character, a mischievous ghoul who teams with a young woman (Winona Ryder) to get her parents out of their new home so it can be restored to its dead owners (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin).  Deadline reports that the deal grew out of Grahame-Smith’s screenwriting work on Tim Burton’s next film, Dark Shadows, an adaptation of the 1960s horror TV series.  Grahame-Smith, who came to popularity out of his gimmick novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (film adaptations are in the works for both), is contracted to write two scripts under the deal and Beetlejuice could be one of them.

Exclusive: Producers Don Hahn and Allison Abbate Talk FRANKENWEENIE at D23; Plus the FRANKENWEENIE Logo

FRANKENWEENIE Logo and Don Hahn and Allison Abbate FRANKENWEENIE Interview slice

At today’s D23, Walt Disney released the logo for Tom Burton’s stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie.  If you’re not aware, Burton came up with the idea for Frankenweenie in the early 80′s, but due to budget constraints and never having directed a feature, he decided to make it as a short film.  Which, at the time, proved to be a great calling card, as the short led him to directing features.  And now it’s come full circle, as Burton has been hard at work bringing Frankenweenie to life as a feature film, and it’s getting released October 5, 2012.

Shortly after showing the packed D23 audience a sizzle reel, I was able to speak with producers Allison Abbate and Don Hahn backstage.  They talked about what they showed today, the visual look of the film (it’s both in 3D and black and white) and what year it takes place, the music and score, and when will we see our first look at the film (October).  Hit the jump to watch the interview and you can also get a high resolution version of the logo.

BIG FISH Stage Musical Headed to Broadway

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 8th, 2011 at 7:18 pm

It’s surprising that no Tim Burton movie has been adapted for the stage yet, no?  In 2002, Tim Burton signed on to helm Batman: The Musical.  By 2005, though, Batman Begins assumed full control of the franchise.  And obviously, a superhero musical would never, ever work on Broadway.  Burton has plenty of non-Batman material to pick from — indeed, the director will oversee a stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland with Disney.  But c’mon, we can do better.  Enter Big Fish.

Big Fish screenwriter John August repurposed the fantastical father-son tale for the stage with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family musical).  Big Fish producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen are also on board for the musical; Susan Stroman, the Tony Award winner behind The Producers, will direct and choreograph with an eye toward a spring 2012 release.  Hit the jump for a refresher on the synopsis.

Tim Burton Says DARK SHADOWS Won’t Be 3D, Wants an “Ethereal Tone”

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 30th, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Tim Burton is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art right now to present an exhibit that features hundreds of his drawings, paintings, sculptures and films.  During an interview, he spoke a bit about his plans for Dark Shadows; notably, they do not include 3D

“I have no plans for [3D]. I loved doing “Alice” in 3D.  Frankeweenie, gonna do that in 3D. There’s people like, ‘Everything’s gonna be in 3D,’ or ‘I hate 3D!’  I think people should have a choice. I don’t think it should be forced on anybody. At the same time, it’s great, some of it.”

That seems like the right approach, to employ 3D when it suits the project.  We’ll see if Warner Bros cooperates with no plans for post-conversion.  Production is currently underway in London with stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, and Jackie Earle Haley.  Dark Shadows is scheduled for release on May 11, 2012.  Read more from Burton after the break.

Full Synopsis Revealed for Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS: Jonny Lee Miller Joins Cast

Warner Bros. has announced that principal photography has begun on Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult classic TV series  Dark Shadows.  While I’ve always found announcements about the start of production to be slightly baffling (Movie studio is making movies!  Will wonders never cease?!), they sometimes contain useful information.  In the case of this Dark Shadows announcement, there are two newsworthy items.  First up, Jonny Lee Miller (Dexter) has joined the cast which features Johnny Depp (of course), Helena Bonham Carter (again, of course), Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, and Jackie Earle Haley.

Secondly, Warner Bros. has also released the full synopsis which not only provides plot details (but nothing spoilery) but also details the relationship between all of the characters.  Hit the jump to check out the press release, which includes the synopsis.  Dark Shadows is set to open May 11, 2012.
