The first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has gone online. While I’m not the biggest fan of the source material, I do happen to be a fan of Luhrmann’s. Having this phenomenal cast lined up for the production doesn’t hurt either and this new trailer gives us a glimpse at each of them in turn. There are no 3D effects on display as of yet, but the first trailer highlights all of the bravura, hyperbole and flair we’ve come to expect from the Moulin Rouge! director. While I was a little put off by the choice of music for the trailer, I’ve got faith that the soundtrack will be exemplary as always.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th. [Update: We've now added the teaser poster, which you can find after the jump.]

A new image from Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has gone online. The image shows “flamboyant and suave Jewish money lender” Meyer Wolfsheim (Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan) sitting next to Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). However, don’t expect to see much of Wolfsheim in the picture. “I play Meyer Wolfsheim for about a few seconds…,” Bachchan tells THR, “by the time you look down on your popcorn to pick another morsel, I’d be gone from the film…he, he…kinda short service… But with giants of Hollywood – Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire.” Still, it’s not bad gig for someone who hosts the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? I never saw Regis Philbin in a potential awards-contender.

The inception of The Amazing Spider-Man is a curious story. Director Sam Raimi was already heavy into development on Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire returning as Spidey and John Malkovich poised to play the film’s villain, Vulture. Apparently Raimi and Sony didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye on where the fourth Spider-Man should go, and the director wasn’t particularly confident that he could turn out a quality movie in time to make the Summer 2011 release date. Moreover, Raimi was allegedly still sour about being forced to include Venom in Spider-Man 3, so he wasn’t exactly eager to bend to the studio’s will.
An abrupt announcement was made that Spider-Man 4 was dead, Raimi and Maguire were out, and a reboot was slated for a Summer 2012 release date. Well, we’re now on the cusp of Summer 2012 and the release of The Amazing Spider-Man is a few short months away. Maguire recently sat down to interview the new Spidey, Andrew Garfield, and some interesting/fun tidbits were gleaned from the conversation. Hit the jump for more.

GK Films has pre-emptively acquired the feature rights to The 5th Wave, a sci-fi trilogy that young adult novelist Rick Yancey is planning. Variety provides the logline: “Series follows a teenage girl who survives an alien invasion only to then search for her brother, who may or may not have been abducted by human-looking extra-terrestrials.” Naturally, romance is involved, as a cute* boy helps our heroine in her search. But there’s a twist: he may be an alien in disguise.
Yancey is best known in the YA world for the Alfred Kropp fantasy series—Warner Bros. picked up those rights in 2005, but it’s unclear what the status is on the movie now. In the last two years, Yancey published another trilogy that starts with The Monstrologist, the rights to which are also being shopped around. The 5th Wave is housed at Tobey Maguire‘s Material Pictures. Maguire and Material’s Matthew Plouffe will produce alongside GK heads Graham King and Tim Headington (Hugo). GK and Material are also partners in the development of Outback, a sci-fi actioner led by Carey Mulligan that Gary Ross will direct.

Production on Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby is currently underway in Australia, and today we’ve got our first look at official images from the film. We’ve seen a number of set photos featuring the cast all done up in their dapper Gatsby costumes, but these images give us our first official glimpse at stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton. Everything we’ve seen from this adaptation so far has been pretty fantastic, and these images are no exception (everyone’s just so damn attractive). Hopefully we’ll get to see a trailer sometime soon to get a better idea of what Luhrmann has in store.
Hit the jump to check out the images. DiCaprio plays Gatsby, Mulligan plays Dasiy, Maguire is our narrator Nick Carraway, and Edgerton takes on mega-douche Tom Buchanan. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th, 2012.

Some new set photos from The Great Gatsby have surfaced, giving us a great look at the three leads in costume. Leonardo DiCaprio looks positively dapper as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan is lovely as Daisy, and Tobey Maguire looks like….well, Tobey Maguire. The images are pretty fantastic, and if you weren’t won over by the casting decisions alone, these costume pics should entice you. We got glances of Maguire before (as well as Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher), but this is our first look at DiCaprio and Mulligan. I’m anxiously looking forward to the adaptation not only because it’s The Great Gatsby, but also because I’m highly intrigued as to what director Baz Luhrmann has in store for his 3D iteration.

New set photos from Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby have leaked online. Most of the photos show a fight between Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). I forget what brings Nick and Tom to fisticuffs, especially since Nick is the observer of Jay Gatsby’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) story rather than an active participant. There’s also a first look at Isla Fischer as Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson. There’s not much to say about these photos other than I dig the costumes and the fact that Edgerton is trying to pull off a Hitler moustache.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos and click here to see the set photos we posted yesterday.. The film also stars Carey Mulligan and Jason Clarke. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25, 2012.

Production is currently underway in Syndey on Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and some set photos have surfaced giving us our first look at Tobey Maguire in costume. Maguire plays Nick Carraway in the $150 million pic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan. Maguire looks pretty dapper in his bowtie and suit, and I’m extremely curious to see how Luhrmann’s big-budget adaptation turns out. The images also give us a look at the Long Island set.

We’ve got a couple more casting stories for you today. First up, Nicole Kidman is now in talks to join the cast of Lee Daniels’ (Precious) adaptation of Pete Dexter’s novel The Paperboy. THR reports that Kidman would replace Sofia Vergara, who was forced to drop out after Tobey Maguire’s exit from the project shifted the schedule, imposing on her Modern Family shoot. Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron are apparently still attached to star in the film, which centers on the slacker son of a newspaper editor in Florida, who gets wrapped up in investigating a murder case. Filming is set to begin later this summer.
Hit the jump for the news of John Goodman joining Ben Affleck’s directorial vehicle Argo, as well as a synopsis for the novel The Paperboy.

Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Sofia Vergara, and Zac Efron will star in the adaptation of the 1995 Pete Dexter novel The Paperboy for Precious director Lee Daniels. The story is about the slacker son of a newspaper editor and publisher who gets caught up in a murder investigation with his older brother and (and this is from the official book description) Ward’s partner, “evil dandy Yardley Acheman. I never thought four words could go together so perfectly.
THR reports that filmmaker “Pedro Almodovar (Talk to Her) developed the project for over a decade with Dexter before Daniels came on board. As we reported in February, Daniels wanted Bradley Cooper, Alex Pettyfer, and Vergara so 1 out of 3 ain’t bad especially when you consider that the one you got is terrific and the other two are kind of bland. McConaughey did some great work earlier this year with The Lincoln Lawyer, Maguire is always reliable, and I’m willing to give Efron a shot at weightier material. Hit the jump for the synopsis of the book (which has nothing to do with the classic arcade game pictured above).

Terry Gilliam is one of the most undeniable directors to ever work in the medium. I say that in the sense that when you watch his films you feel the master’s fingerprints all over, and sometimes that makes the film a bit blurry. Gilliam is one of those directors that it is often hard to relax into because he’s so there; it’s hard to ignore what he is doing. Which is why The Fisher King strikes as one of his strongest works in the sense that it is accomplished without shoving itself down your throat. He was brought in last minute to direct an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and took the project up only to have stars Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro already locked in as his leads, had to rewrite everything that came before, and do it (perhaps as it should be done) as a no-holds barred, gonzo, “let’s shoot this fucker” kind of film. My review of the Criterion edition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on Blu-ray after the jump.

Isla Fisher may be joining Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Heat Vision reports that Fisher is in negotiations to play Myrtle Wilson, the wife of George B. Wilson and the mistress of Tom Buchanan (Ben Affleck). If Fisher signs on, she’ll join Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan, wife of Tom Buchanan), and Tobey Maguire (the novel’s narrator Nick Carraway). The other major roles left to be cast are Daisy’s friend Jordan Baker and George Wilson. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you today, both involving adaptations of books. First up, Variety reports that Tobey Maguire is re-teaming with director Ang Lee for his adaptation of Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. The story centers on a boy named Pi who gets stranded for 227 days with a tiger. Maguire will play the man who interviews the adult Pi about his experience. The cast for the 3D film now includes newcomer Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan (In Treatment), Adil Hussain (Calendar Girls), and Gerard Depardieu. The film is slated for a December 14th, 2012 release.
Additionally, Willem Dafoe is in talks to join director Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy) adaptation of the Dean Koontz supernatural thriller Odd Thomas. The film centers on a short-order cook who can commune with the dead. Heat Vision reports that Dafoe is in talks to play a local police chief. Anton Yelchin and Addison Timlin are poised to star in the film. Shooting is set to start in New Mexico later this spring. Hit the jump for a synopsis of both Life of Pi and Odd Thomas.

It was about a year ago that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass moved on from the Bourne franchise, but Universal isn’t ready to part ways with the lucrative franchise. The studio hired Tony Gilroy, a man with writing credits on the first three Bourne scripts, to write and direct a titled The Bourne Legacy. Though the title is borrowed from one of the books in the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy is a standalone project – wholly original story which does not feature the character Jason Bourne.
In the absence of Damon, Universal needs a strapping young man to put on the posters. The studio has begun the search for the actor to play a new assassin character with a “similar background” to Bourne. Gilroy has reportedly met with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz about assuming the mantle.
[Update: Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker have been added to the list of contenders. Details after the break.]

The Details is a darkly comic tale that can never quite seem to get a handle on its tone. The film plays with notions of fate but only a fate that will deal out punishment and retribution no matter how much good you do or if you even receive a kindness. That’s not a problem for a black comedy, but The Details grinds to a halt as its main character receives valuable life lessons or as he heads into another predictable comic set-up. Director Jacob Aaron Estes’s best attempt to tie it all together is with an insufferable Danny Elfman-esque score. Stars Tobey Maguire and Laura Linney do a great job handling the comedy, but even their scenes eventually feel repetitive. The Details has a lot to offer, most notably frustration.
