Universal has released an excellent interactive trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman. Rather than the awful trailer-for-trailer trend, I wish more studios would take the interactive approach where the trailer can lead to behind-the-scenes featurettes, concept art, and other fun stuff. The trailer-for-trailer thing only makes me feel annoyed towards an upcoming film, but this interactive trailer makes me want to see SWATH even more.

Director Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman opens in a little more than a month and Universal wants to make sure you know all the key players, so they’ve rattled off this roll call TV spot. Most of the marketing so far has been geared toward the power struggle between Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) with little attention paid to the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and even less to Prince William (Sam Claflin) and the Dwarves (Toby Jones, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan). Personally, I feel like the marketing machine has been humming along nicely up until this point; this 30-second teaser spot does little else but splash images of the actors across the screen along with their character names. The new international trailer, however, is a nicely edited piece that reminds me why Snow White and the Huntsman, which opens June 1st, was one of our Most Anticipated movies of this quarter. The first trailer and poster for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s (Milk) directorial debut, Virginia, have gone online. The film was originally titled What’s Wrong with Virginia? and screened at TIFF 2010 to scathing reviews. Black went back into the editing room and retooled (and retitled) the film, and now the new cut is set to open next month. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as a single mother who runs into a bit of trouble following a string of events: her longtime affair with the married Mormon Sheriff (Ed Harris) comes to an end as he decides to run for office, then her son (Harrison Gilbertson) starts having an affair with the Sheriff’s daughter (Emma Roberts). Tonally and plot-wise, this trailer is kind of all over the place. There are some good ideas throughout, but I’m unsure as to how Black coalesces everything into a cohesive story. It’s no wonder that this was a tough one to put together, but hopefully Black’s new edit is superior to the previous cut.

The UK trailer for Rodrigo Cortes‘ Red Lights has gone online. The film stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as scientists who investigate paranormal activity, and who find a dangerous challenge when controversial psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement. I caught the movie at Sundance and thought it was terrific up until the ending, which not only leaves the movie on a sour note, but undoes a lot of what was accomplished earlier in the picture. There’s a chance the ending has been changed (most of the people I spoke to at Sundance also had a problem with it), but we’ll have to wait and see. The UK trailer does a fairly solid job of selling the film, although it should play up the paranormal investigations from the first half of the movie since those are the best parts.

Though Lionsgate is undoubtedly scrambling to find a director for the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire before production begins this fall, star Jennifer Lawrence is currently busy shooting the thriller Serena. The first image from the film, featuring Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, has been released along with the announcement that production has commenced in Prague. The pic is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Ron Rash novel about George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence), a 1930s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government.

Late last year we learned that Toby Jones had been tapped to play Alfred Hitchcock in a BBC2 film focusing on the director’s “obsessive relationship” with The Birds actress Tippi Hedren, and today the first image of Jones and Sienna Miller as Hedren has gone online. Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) is directing The Girl with Hitchcok biographer Donald Spoto onboard to ensure the film’s accuracy. Hedren has also been in contact with Jarrold and the production, though she recently expressed some concern:
“If I have one reservation about the film it is that I worry they will not portray me as as strong a character as I was – and still am. I had to be extremely strong to fight off Mr. Hitchcock.”
Jones and Miller look fairly excellent as Hitchcock and Hedren, and I’m eager to see the two in action. This isn’t the only film about Hitchcock in the works, as Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho is headed towards production with Anthony Hopkins taking on Hitch. Universal has released a new trailer and five-minute preview for Snow White and the Huntsman. I can’t believe I’m excited for either of the two Snow White movies opening this year, but here we are. I’m digging what director Rupert Sanders has done with the visuals and the world he’s trying to create. Also, ten points for the Shatterbeast at the end of the trailer (not the official name, but it should be). The trailer gets the job done. As for the extended preview, it contain the first real look at the dwarves in action, so it’s worth your time. I like everything I’m seeing, and when Dave caught the film’s presentation at WonderCon this weekend, he said the movie looks liked an “action-packed, visual marvel that is positively brimming with emotion.” As someone who enjoys action-packed visual marvels that are positively brimming with emotion, this Snow White sounds like the one for me (Tarsem Singh‘s Mirror Mirror, by comparison, sounds like the movie for no one).
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and preview, and click here for Christina’s interview with Sanders. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Ian McShane, and Charlize Theron. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

As part of Universal’s promotion at this year’s WonderCon, they showed off some new footage of their upcoming spin on an old fairy tale, Snow White and the Huntsman. Some of it you can see in a series of featurettes we’ve posted here and here. Some of it will undoubtedly only be shown when the movie hits theaters early this summer. The picture may sound like a simple fairy tale, but after seeing this new footage there is no question in my mind that Snow White and the Huntsman is an action-packed, visual marvel that is positively brimming with emotion. While Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman and Sam Claflin’s Prince William may be the requisite brawn of the movie, Snow White and the Huntsman is all about the showdown between Charlize Theron’s frigid Queen Ravenna and Kristen Stewart’s defiant Snow White. Forget Return of the King, this is “Return of the Queen.”
Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Ian McShane, and Charlize Theron opens June 1st. Hit the jump for more.

Director Susanne Bier (In a Better World) has just landed two more quality actors for her timber-empire thriller, Serena. Rhys Ifans (Anonymous) is currently in negotiations and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger) is set to join a cast that already features Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class). Serena is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Ron Rash novel about George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence), a 1930s newlywed couple who travel to North Carolina to seize control of the timber industry. Infidelity and infertility leads Serena to plot the murder of George’s illegitimate son while attempting to keep their timber land from being taken by the government. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a crackling, intense, complex, old-fashioned spy-thriller…but you need to wait over an hour to get there. Director Tomas Alfredson does a fantastic job of painting a rich 1970s setting that swings between London, France, Istanbul, and Budapest, but we have trouble getting our bearings as we jump across timelines and struggle to understand the wide cast of characters. Terrific performances begin to peek out and try to surface but are smothered in an overdone attempt to obfuscate rather than intrigue. Alfredson wants to put us inside the web of confusion of trying to uncover the truth, but he strings us along for too long. At some point, the spy game must begin.

Toby Jones should’ve received more praise for his turn as Truman Capote in the film Infamous, but Philip Seymour Hoffman and the superior film Capote just got more traction and attention when awards season came around. However, now Jones will get a chance to shine for BBC2 as the UK network has announced the actor will play iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in a TV film called The Girl. Rather than being a standard biopic, the film will focus on the director’s “obsessive relationship” with his The Birds star Tippi Hedren, who will be played by Sienna Miller (The Factory Girl). Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) will direct the film from writer Gwyneth Hughes which also features the acting talents of Imelda Staunton (Another Year) and Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey) with Hitchcock biographer Donald Spoto also working on the film for authenticity and accuracy. More after the jump.

Focus Features has released a new featurette for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It’s mostly your standard EPK fluff where everyone talks about the greatness of the material and each other. However, it also provides some background on the setting, and Tinker Tailor is a movie where the more you understand the world, the better off you’ll be. The film throws a heap of characters and jargon at you and then jumps around timelines just to make the puzzle even more difficult to solve. It certainly deepens the mystery, but it’s not a good sign when I’m handed a pamphlet (click here to view the interactive version online) with a list explaining code names and terms. (I also spent the whole movie thinking “Karla” was a nickname for the Russians, but after the movie I found out it was a code name for the Soviet intelligence chief). The featurette also attempts to build awards buzz for Gary Oldman, but we’ll see if that pans out.
Hit the jump to check out the featurette. The film also stars Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, David Dencik, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, and Ciarán Hinds. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opens December 9th.

Sometimes a memoir has to be taken with a grain of salt. In My Week With Marilyn, a retelling of a young man who has the time of his life on and off-set with Marilyn Monroe, things can become a bit eye-rolling. How much actually happened manages to be less important. What is essential is a small glimpse into something we may already know but remains heartbreaking nonetheless: Marilyn was an imperfect creature trying to keep from being swallowed alive by her fame. Despite not answering much of the whys and remaining mostly fluff, director Simon Curtis gives Michelle Williams the daunting task of playing Monroe near the peak of her popularity and she nails it. You can look at stills as much as you want, but the moving image allows Williams to blend into the role and become something audiences can fall in love with all over again. Just a few weeks out from the US debut of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Focus Features has released a host of new images. The spy thriller that features Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Colin Firth, just to name a few, is set during the Cold War era and follows former spy George Smiley (Oldman) through his investigation of a possible double agent within MI-6. Based off of the 1974 British novel by John le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is the first novel of the “Karla Trilogy” and the first film installment may spawn a franchise.
Since the UK saw a September release for the film, we have a host of clips, images and trailers that you can find here. But with the US release coming up, we’ll also have new interviews with the cast coming soon. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also stars Mark Strong, Toby Jones, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch and opens December 9th. Hit the jump to check out the new images.

Universal has released the first trailer for Rupert Sanders‘ Snow White and the Huntsman. Kristen Stewart plays Snow White in the fairy tale adaptation, where she trains in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to fight the evil queen (Charlize Theron). I’m with this trailer until it Theron says…”Mirror, mirror on the wall…,” and then I started to roll my eyes. But I’m trying to give it a chance because I like the visual style and I want to resist the urge to dismiss it just because it has “Snow White” in the title. Of course, both Snow White and the Huntsman and Tarsem Singh’s Mirror, Mirror have to contend with trying to take on a new version of Snow White when for the past seventy-five years we’ve really only known the one with the singing dwarves. But at least with Sanders’ Snow White, it looks like there’s an intriguing and exciting vision behind this new take. Your move, Singh.
