Not long after Warner Bros. was reportedly getting cold feet with the swelling budget of David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, it looks like the studio has officially hit the pause button. The film, starring Kit Herington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Darkest Hour) in a reimagined Arthurian legend, was supposed to open March 15, 2013. Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) reportedly informed cast and crew that it “wasn’t looking good,” although studio insiders confirm they’re trying to make the project work. Warner envisions the tone of Arthur & Lancelot to be in a similar vein to their Sherlock Holmes franchise, but will have to negotiate budget and scheduling difficulties. Herington, will return to Game of Thrones this spring while Kinnaman is expected to segue into the film shoot after wrapping on AMC’s The Killing. The project may move forward without one or both of the actors. Hit the jump for news regarding the delay of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer 3D and Rock of Ages.

The female leads in writer/director Joseph Kosinski’s Untitled Tom Cruise Project have changed almost as often as the film’s title (which has previously been referred to as Horizons and Oblivion). Last year we reported that a number of actresses were vying for two lead roles opposite Tom Cruise in the sci-fi pic. Then, it seemed as if Jessica Chastain (The Help) had landed one of them with the other role still being sorted out. Now it seems that Chastain has backed out in order to work on the Kathryn Bigelow picture about the death of Osama Bin Laden. That left the door open for Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace), who previously auditioned and relative newcomer to American cinema, Andrea Riseborough (Happy-Go-Lucky) to join Cruise.
The film, whatever its name is, revolves around Cruise who plays a veteran soldier banished to the surface of Earth which has been destroyed by an alien attack. When a mysterious woman crash-lands nearby, their encounter sets off an eye-opening chain of events. Hit the jump for more.

Let’s face it: the holidays are here and most people’s brains are already on vacation. Since it’s just too hard to come up with an original movie idea right now, a lot of talk has turned to potential sequels. Some franchises, like Gremlins and Mission: Impossible already have more than one movie in the books while others, such as Colombiana and Pineapple Express are open to sequels just because they can be. So we’ve ransacked the internets to find some updates on sequels you’ve been dying to see and others you never dreamed of being produced. Hit the jump to check them out.

In Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, actor Jeremy Renner plays Agent William Brandt, an analyst who is more desk jockey than field agent. When Impossible Missions Force (IMF) operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, he is disavowed, along with the rest of the agency, when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol.” Left with only a team of fellow IMF fugitives – including Brandt, Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) – whose personal motives are unclear, Hunt must find a way to clear the agency’s name and prevent another attack.
At the film’s press day, Jeremy Renner talked about playing a character whose motives may be questionable, how great it is to be a part of such a successful franchise, getting in shape for the physical demands of the role, and how Tom Cruise has helped him prepare for any future action work he’ll have to do. He also talked about currently filming The Bourne Legacy, his work in The Avengers, what attracted him to the James Gray film Low Life, and the process of developing a Steve McQueen biopic. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages. The film tells the story of a small town girl (Julianne Hough) who falls in love with a larger-than-life rocker (Tom Cruise) set against the backdrop of the 1980s music scene, featuring songs from the likes of Journey, Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon. The gist of the trailer is that if you like 80s rock, you’ll probably like a musical that only features 80s rock and uses it as a basis for the plot. But there’s also an important lesson: When sleazy guy played by Paul Giamatti give you a chance at fame, you take him up on his obviously legit offer.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The film also stars Diego Boneta, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mary J. Blige. Directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray), Rock of Ages opens on June 1, 2012.

A batch of new images and a new clip from Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has been released. The film is the fourth entry in the ever-changing Mission: Impossible franchise and finds Tom Cruise and his team going undercover in order to clear they’re name. I’m excited about this movie for a few reasons: director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) is making his live-action debut, Simon Pegg is swell, and judging from the trailers the pic looks to be an engaging and fun action flick. The supporting cast is pretty impressive as well, with Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Tom Wilkinson, Josh Holloway, and Michael Nyqvist rounding out the cast.

In October, we reported that Tom Cruise was in talks to star in Doug Liman‘s sci-fi action film All You Need Is Kill. We also reported that the title had been changed to We Are Mortals, but Variety is referring to the film by its original title (which is the one I prefer since it’s catchier). The movie is similar to Source Code in that involves a soldier getting killed over and over again. However, this time around the soldier is involved in a war against aliens and has to keep reliving the day he was killed in battle. However, reliving this experience makes him a better soldier. Presumably he’ll memorize the location of all the weapon drops and how to ruin the game for anyone who doesn’t spend every waking hour playing it God I hate online first person shooters so much.

Paramount has released 17 new images and 5 set photos from Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The images show off spy-thriller shenanigans and director Brad Bird directing up a storm of spy-thriller shenanigans. And as you can see from the image above, Tom Cruise is probably contemplating if it’s unreasonable to demand full bars if you’re in a cloud of debris.
Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Lea Seydoux, and Tom Wilkinson. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens in IMAX on December 16th and goes wide on December 21st. If you see it in 70mm IMAX, you’ll also get see the prologue for The Dark Knight Rises.

Paramount has released two new clips for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The primary purpose seems to be to highlight the new character played by Jeremy Renner. In one clip, Renner banters capably with Simon Pegg; in the next, he gets in on the action in a scene aptly titled “Fan Jump.” In the footage we’ve seen so far, Renner fits in well in the Mission: Impossible world. That spells good things for this movie, obviously, but is especially good news since it was rumored early on that Renner may assume the lead in future Mission: Impossible films.
Focusing on the present, Tom Cruise is still the headliner of what looks to be one of the more entertaining releases this holiday season. Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Lea Seydoux, and Tom Wilkinson join Renner and Pegg in the supporting cast. Directed by Brad Bird, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens on December 16. Watch the clips after the break.

With the holiday movie season upon us, a few new images from some of the upcoming Oscar contenders have been unveiled. We’ve got a new look at Michael Fassbender in the extremely well-received drama Shame. Fassbender plays a sex-addict opposite Carey Mulligan, and our own Matt Goldberg loved the flick. There’s also a new image of Rooney Mara from David Fincher’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and an ominous image of Gary Oldman from the spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Additionally, we’ve got another look at Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, and an image of Sandra Bullock and Thomas Horn in the adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
But that’s not all! We’ve also got new images from We Bought a Zoo, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Haywire, Underworld: Awakening, In the Land of Blood and Honey, New Year’s Eve, and One for the Money. Hit the jump to check them out.

New character banners for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol have gone online. Usually we regurgitate advertising that’s in English, but these are in Russian so it’s a nice change of pace.
Hit the jump to check out the banners. The film stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Lea Seydoux, and Tom Wilkinson. Tom Cruise‘s bread-and-butter is action movies, but every now and then he’s willing to try something new like he did with Collateral (the only movie where he plays a villain), Magnolia (the biggest supporting role in his career), and disappearing under the make-up and personality of Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. His newest challenge will be playing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman‘s adaptation of the rock musical Rock of Ages. The plot centers on a small-town-girl (Julianne Hough) who falls for Jaxx against the backdrop of 80s rock like Journey, SEO Speedwagon, and Styx. Cruise recently spoke about what drew him to the project, and how he prepared for his role.

A new trailer for Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has been released. The fourth installment in the espionage franchise finds Ethan Hunt and his new team going undercover to clear their organization’s name. If you missed the featurette we posted earlier showcasing Tom Cruise hanging off the tallest building in the world, click here to check it out.
Hit the jump to watch the new trailer. The film also stars Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, and Tom Wilkinson. Previews for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol begin in select IMAX and conventional theaters on December 16th, with the film opening wide on December 21st.

Judging by the trailer and a new featurette for Brad Bird‘s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) running around the outside of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, is going to be almost as important as having a stylish hoodie. It certainly looks like Cruise did his own stunts, which raises two questions: 1) What insurance company would cover such a risky stunt? and 2) What if he had died? It would be a spectacular and silly death. Yes, he would have fallen off the world’s tallest building, but at the same time, people would wonder, “Why didn’t he just use a professional—and let’s be honest—expendable stuntman?” I guess the set piece just wouldn’t work if you had any doubt that Tom Cruise was risking his life to make an action movie.

Warner Bros. is in search of a major star to topline their adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, now going by the title We Are Mortals. The studio first wanted Brad Pitt, a natural choice since his Mr. and Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman is the man in charge of Mortals. Pitt must not have jumped at the chance to reunite with Liman, because according to THR, Warner Bros. is in talks with Tom Cruise for the starring role. The news is briefly mentioned in one of those “Tom Cruise Is Back!” features the trades are fond of. (It’s worth a read if you can stomach revelations like, “[Cruise is] working cheaper at times—sources say he’s getting just $5 million for Ages.” In other words: not worth a read.)
The premise of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel is an eye-catcher: “A young Army recruit who, despite being killed in the first day of intergalactic alien invasion of Earth, is continually resurrected Groundhog Day–style to the day before he was killed.” Full synopsis after the jump.
