We’re about to get a brand new look at Joss Whedon’s The Avengers this Sunday during the Super Bowl (watch a teaser for the spot here), but today a couple of promotional banners hit the web. They’re reminiscent of the numerous character banners we’ve seen previously, but we get another look at the elusive Hulk. As the fllm’s release date looms closer, we should be seeing more and more of the Mark Ruffalo-infused green alter ego as the visual effects work progresses. The banners also give us a small look at Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill. In addition, a new image of Tom Hiddleston looking fairly maniacal as Loki has hit the web, so that’s included after the jump as well.
Hit the jump to check out the banners. The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner. The Avengers opens in IMAX 3D on May 4th.

As Marvel is all about social media, the studio assembled a few of the creatives involved in the upcoming superhero pic The Avengers to answer some fan questions on Twitter today. Taking part in the discussion were director Joss Whedon and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Clark Gregg. Appropriately, Jackson kicked off the Q&A by tweeting a picture of himself flipping off the camera. The quartet talked a bit about the film (Whedon denied those ridiculous Spider-Man cameo rumors), and Marvel released a preview of the TV spot for the film that will play during the Super Bowl. The TV spot preview is pretty damn epic, and gives us a fantastic look at Hulk. I have a feeling that this is going to be the Super Bowl movie preview that everyone will be talking about. Furthermore, Marvel announced today that not only will The Avengers be released in 3D this May, but they’re also re-mastering the film for IMAX screens. So if you’re looking for a ridiculously immersive experience, check out your favorite superheroes in IMAX 3D.
Hit the jump for some of the highlights from the Twitter Q&A, and to check out the Super Bowl preview. The Avengers opens in IMAX 3D, 3D, and regular ol’ 2D on May 4th.

Tom Hiddleston had an awesome 2011 with roles in The Avengers, Midnight in Paris, The Deep Blue Sea, and War Horse. Now he’s replacing the only guy who had a better 2011, Michael Fassbender, in Jim Jarmusch‘s Only Lovers Left Alive. Jarmusch said back in May that the film is a “‘crypto-vampire love story’, set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangiers.” THR adds that the horror drama is “described as an unusual love story between two vampires who have been in love for centuries.” With Jarmusch at the helm, you may as well toss out any expectations or pre-conceived notions you have regarding a vampire movie.
Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, and John Hurt are still on board to co-star. Only Lovers Left Alive will shoot in Germany later this year. Hiddleston will next be seen reprising his role as Loki in The Avengers, which opens in 3D on May 4th.

The way of the future indeed. As more evidence that Twitter is becoming the glue that holds all forms of media together, Marvel has announced that director Joss Whedon and cast members from The Avengers will be participating in a live Twitter Q&A. The “Global Twitter Chat” will take place on Tuesday, January 31st at 11am PST and will include Whedon and stars Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg. As if the chance to ask Joss Whedon questions wasn’t enticement enough, fans will also have the opportunity to answer Avengers trivia for a chance to win Avengers prize packs. It’s an Avengers extravaganza! Hit the jump for more, including confirmation of at 30-second TV spot for the film during the Super Bowl.

Earlier this week we brought you images from Empire Magazine’s special preview on Marvel’s The Avengers. Now, Marvel has released the images in hi-res along with some new looks at Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a casual, un-Hulked Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) with Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Speaking of Stark, if you didn’t get a chance to check out his $10 million Acura that Steve posted yesterday, click here to see it.
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, also stars Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Thor, as well as Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Tom Hiddleston also returns as the villainous Loki. The Avengers assemble on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the images.

Lately, Thor 2’s production has been in flux due to the original director Patty Jenkins leaving citing “creative differences” and new director Alan Taylor having to wait for a new writer to rework Don Payne’s original script. It looks as if Marvel Studios has settled on a new screenwriter so now everyone can just settle down and get back to work on making the sequel to one of 2011’s most successful films. Originally considered a contender for the rewriting job, Robert Rodat has bested competitors John Collee and Roger Avary for the position. The Oscar-nominated scribe behind Saving Private Ryan and the creator of TNT’s Falling Skies will have the task of scripting where the Asgardian’s story will head after he wraps things up with the The Avengers this May. Hit the jump for more on Thor 2.

Marvel’s Thor 2 appears to be back on track, and we’ve now got a brief update on the production. After running through what seemed like a revolving door of potential directors (the latest of which, Patty Jenkins, left the project in early December), television helmer Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) has been set to direct the superhero follow-up. Star Tom Hiddleston recently spoke to Empire and revealed that filming is poised to begin this summer:
“All I know about Thor 2 is that we’re supposed to film it in London in the summer and that it is being directed by Alan Taylor.”
Like I said, it’s a brief update, but it’s good to know that things seem to be moving forward. Both Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman are set to return, but plot details are being (predictably) kept under lock and key. We should have a better idea of where the story will go after The Avengers in May. Thor 2 is slated for November 15th, 2013.

With awards-season upon us, I’ve been doing my best to catch up with any potential contenders that I may have missed up to this point. Without a doubt, the standout of late has been writer/director Tate Taylor‘s The Help. I had heard from several friends that the pic was solid but nothing special. After finally getting a chance to sit down with it myself, I have to say that I disagree. I think it’s better than that. Not only is it filled with great performances, but it also finds a way to be more than a story of how a caring white person can help those otherwise hopeless black people. If only 2009′s The Blind Side could go back in time and take note.
But enough of my own cinematic experiences, in this week’s “Top 5″ you’ll find a recap of our visit to the Romanian set of Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, Benedict Cumberbatch talking about his villainous role in J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek sequel, our interview with Mondo creative director Justin Ishmael, the possibility of a Bridesmaids world without Kristen Wiig, and video interviews with War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston and more. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

I couldn’t spot any new footage in the German trailer for The Avengers, but there’s definitely some new stuff in a Russian trailer that just went online. For example, there’s a brief dialogue exchange between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), but it’s dubbed in Russian. However, I believe it’s the exchange Tommy saw in English at D23 earlier this year. According to Tommy, Loki says, “He has an army,” and Stark replies, “We have a Hulk.” There’s also some brief shots of Captain America (Chris Evans) jumping out of a plane and Loki dealing some damage to our fine planet and its citizens.
Hit the jump to check out the Russian trailer. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Now playing in theaters is director Steven Spielberg‘s fantastic new movie, War Horse. Based on the Award winning play (which is based on Michael Morpurgo’s book) and set during World War I, War Horse tells the story of “the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who tames and trains him.” And don’t just take my word for it, early screenings have been very positive and the drama is heading into Oscar season with very positive buzz, especially after the National Board of review named War Horse one of the best 10 films of the year. The film also stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Kennedy, and Toby Kebbell. You can watch the trailer here and here’s seven clips.
To help promote the film, DreamWorks recently held a press junket in New York City and I was able to talk with Hiddleston, Kennedy and Kebbell on camera. While I only had a few minutes, they each talked about how they got cast in War Horse and told some great stories. And, of course, I asked them about their favorite karaoke songs. One of them even sang for a few seconds. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

“A Boy and His Pet” stories can be immensely charming. Pets are sweet and they look up to the boy (or girl, but usually it’s a boy in these stories) and the boy loves his faithful friend. The genre started out as a “A Boy and His Dog”, but has expanded to “A Boy and His Robot” (The Iron Giant) and “A Boy and His Dragon” (How to Train Your Dragon). Steven Spielberg‘s War Horse pulls it back to terrestrial creatures and starts out trying to tell the story of a boy and his horse. But then the movie changes gears, separates the two and rather than show the struggle of both to get back to the other, the story uses the horse to try and tell a series of vignettes about life during World War I. However, those vignettes lose their honesty when Spielberg refuses to show the devastating horror of war.

New posters have gone online for The Avengers and Haywire. Marvel seems to be taking a page from Warner Bros’ Harry Potter playbook by churning out as many character posters as possible between now and the arrival of the movie. We’ve already seen the character banners, but now Marvel is disassembling these banners into individual posters.
There’s also a new poster for Haywire and it shares the same eye-catching design as the previous one-sheets. It even makes the actors’ face-boxes look cool. Hit the jump to check out the new posters. Haywire opens January 20, 2012. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

A German trailer for The Avengers has gone online. Other sites are saying it has new footage, but I’m not seeing anything I didn’t see in either the U.S. trailer or the Captain America post-credits teaser. If it’s there, I leave it to eagle-eyed readers to point it out. There may also be some new voiceover dialogue, but I’m not sure since my German is a little non-existent.
Hit the jump to watch the German trailer. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Marvel has released two new banners for The Avengers. They’re almost identical to the previous banners except a couple of the poses are different and there isn’t a giant “A” covering the superheroes and Loki (still no love for S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders)). But the kids love The Avengers so I’ve put the new banners after the jump. The film opens in 3D on May 4, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo.

We have 7 clips from War Horse, one of two Steven Spielberg films that will see release this holiday season. Set during World War I, War Horse tells the story of “the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert (Jeremy Irvine), who tames and trains him.” Based on early screenings, the drama is heading into Oscar season with very positive buzz, especially after the National Board of review named War Horse one of the best 10 films of the year.
Tom Hiddleston, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Toby Kebbell also star. War Horse opens on December 25. Watch the clips after the jump.
