There’s plenty to like about the original 1985 version of Fright Night: the performances from Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowall, the great practical horror effects, and the thoughtful subtext about teens coming to grips with their burgeoning sexuality and the familiar inadequacies that come with it. The remake of Fright Night ditches almost all of these aspects but still manages to be an entertaining creature feature filled with excellent performances, plenty of humor, and some nice surprises as it tries update the film for a new audience.

A number of images from director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have been released. The film centers on a teenager (Anton Yelchin) whose neighbor (Colin Farrell) turns out to be a vampire. We’ve seen some of these images before, but a few of them are new. When Farrell’s in the right movie, he can be great, and the supporting cast isn’t too shabby. I’m interested to see the actor’s take on the vampire craze.
In addition to Farrell and Yelchin, Fright Night also stars Toni Collette, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco and Imogen Poots. The film hits theaters in 3D on August 19th.

A new trailer for Fright Night has gone online. I’m not really sure what to expect from the film. Yes, it looks like there’s a lot more action than the original and while I would be slightly worried that the update may be trying too hard to be cool, I’ve heard positive word both on the script and reports from the set. Here’s hoping it all comes together.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Toni Collette. Fright Night opens in 3D on August 19th.

Australian-born actress Toni Collette is set to reunite with fellow Aussie PJ Hogan (Confessions of a Shopaholic) for the director’s latest project Mental. The two previously worked together on the 1994 Australian comedy Muriel’s Wedding, a film that served as a breakout hit for both Collette and Hogan. Variety reports that Mental, an Australian production, will center on a family and its “crazy but charismatic nanny,” because crazy and charismatic are the most desirable traits when choosing a nanny. Hogan is penning the script, and Screen Australia will be backing the project. Collette will next be seen in the Fright Night remake, which hits theaters August 19th.

When you remake a movie that almost every horror fan loves, you’re playing with fire and it’s almost impossible not get burned. After all, if you stick too close to the original, people will say, “why did you remake it.” And if you decide to change too much, fans will complain about what was left out. However, after watching twenty minutes of director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake in his editing suite last week, I’m very confident he’s walking the fine line that will make the large majority very happy. More about the footage after the jump and here’s the just released trailer.

DreamWorks has released the first trailer for Craig Gillespie’s 3D remake of Fright Night which stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant and Imogen Poots, I did a set visit for Fright Night and recently watched twenty minutes of the film in a Santa Monica editing suite. I’m confident the remake is going to be cool. Judge for yourself by checking out the trailer after the jump along with the poster. Fright Night hits theaters August 19th.

Last September, a set photo of David Tenannt in Craig Gillespie’s remake of Fright Night went online. This week, DreamWorks/Disney are going to be making a major push on the film and they’re kicking it off with the first official image of Tennant as Las Vegas stage magician Peter Vincent. I’m not sure how Vincent factors into the remake, but in the 1985 original, he was midnight movie host who proclaimed to be a vampire hunter and whose services were called upon by teenager Charlie Brewster to combat Charlie’s bloodsucking new neighbor.
Hit the jump to check out the image of Tennant along with a new image of Charlie (Anton Yelchin) and his mother (Toni Collette). Be sure to keep checking back this week for more Fright Night stuff as we’ll be posting Steve’s report from the film’s editing bay as well as the first trailer. Fright Night also stars Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Imogen Poots. The film opens in 3D on August 19th.

DreamWorks has released the official synopsis for director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night which stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant and Imogen Poot. Here’s what they sent over:
Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—but everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.
I know a decent amount about this remake and can tell you it’s something you should be looking forward to. Hit the jump for more:

While walking through my hotel lobby, I came across the first official image from the currently filming Fright Night remake and it’s David Tennant as Peter Vincent. If you’re familiar with the original Fright Night, you know Peter Vincent (as played by Roddy McDowall) was a late night TV host. But based on the picture, I think it’s pretty obvious they’ve updated the Peter Vincent character.
While I’d love to say more…for now all I can do is say hit the jump for the full picture. You can expect a lot more Fright Night coverage down the road…

Imogen Poots (Solitary Man) has signed on to play the female lead in Craig Gillespie’s remake of the 1985 cult horror-comedy Fright Night. Poots is the final piece of major casting. She joins Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, David Tennant, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. For those who don’t know, Fright Night is about teenager Charley Brewster discovering that his next door neighbor is a vampire (and not the cuddly Twilight-kind).
Poots will play Charley’s girlfriend, but according to Heat Vision, in this version the character is “part of the popular and unaware of his earlier life as a nerd.” Another change from the original is that Peter Vincent character is no longer a late-night spook show host (which would admittedly be outdated) and is now Criss Angel-like Vegas magician. Hit the jump for a side-by-side comparison of the original actors to the ones in the remake.
As you may know by now, the 1985 cinematic opus, Fright Night, is getting remade. Now, according to Heat Vision, Colin Farrell has joined the cast in the role of Jerry Dandridge, the murderous vampire neighbor that happens to be incredibly charming and, given Farrell’s casting, potentially Irish. Farrell’s part was played brilliantly by Chris Sarandon in the original.
Farrell joins Toni Collette (United States of Tara) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation) in the cast. Yelchin is slated to play the part of Charley Brewster, the young man that intends to prove, with some help from local-pulp horror-show-host Peter Vincent, that Jerry is killing people. Collette will play Jerry’s mom. In the original, Charley’s mom proved that she wasn’t the greatest parent when she becomes enraptured by Jerry, the suave, suspected-vampire, despite her son’s protests.

Brie Larson has been acting since the age of six. After moving to Los Angeles, the Sacramento native soon landed a series regular role on the television series Raising Dad and segued into films, such as Sleepover and Hoot, all while nurturing a singing career.
Now, she can currently be seen as Kate Gregson, Tara’s (Toni Collette) teenaged daughter on the Showtime series United States of Tara, which returns for Season 2 on March 22nd. She will also be seen in the features Greenberg, due out March 19th, and the highly anticipated Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, from Edgar Wright.
In a recent interview, Brie Larson talked about exploring new aspects of her United States of Tara character, working alongside the accomplished Toni Collette and the musical jam sessions with her, Collette and John Corbett. The now 20-year-old also shared some insight on her role in Scott Pilgrim. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

It was created with Claymation, its main characters speak with adorable accents, and funny-looking animals are involved – but “Wallace and Gromit” this ain’t.
Director Adam Elliot won an Oscar for 2003′s “Harvie Krumpet”, a 23-minute animated short about a one-testicled, Tourette’s-ridden World War II survivor and animal rights activist, and he brings that same gift for unique characters and melancholy overtones to his debut full-length feature “Mary and Max”. My review after the jump:

“Mary and Max” was the opening night selection at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film was a clayography feature from writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs and it told a very unusual story about a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Toni Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in New York City. While the film didn’t get stellar reviews, it was a good movie that deserved to be seen. Thankfully, while it isn’t getting a theatrical release, I’ve just found out the film will premiere nationwide on most cable systems on October 14th, 2009 via Sundance Selects on-demand. More after the jump:

Imagine if the same six or seven movies and their actors, writers, directors, etc. kept getting nominated for Oscars every year. There would be slight deviations but for the most part, Academy members would just take their ballot from last year, peruse a couple of For Your Consideration ads, maybe read a critic’s list or two as a second source to make sure they weren’t making any selection deemed interesting, and you’d wonder if they just showed a repeat except they somehow replaced Jon Stewart with Hugh Jackman.
“TV’s Finest Night” is always a repeat and you cherish just about anyone who hasn’t won an Emmy in the past no matter the quality of the show. Yes, “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” are excellent shows but barring a steep decline in quality, I already know who’s going to win next year because the Emmys are a bunch of lazy wimps who don’t watch anything outside the ten shows they already love. Hit the jump for a list of tonight’s winners and only grumbling since this farce isn’t worth the energy of a blinding rage.
