VEEP Series Premiere Review

For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of enjoying In the Loop, a British comedy from Armando Iannucci, based on the series The Thick of It set in British government, finally the writer and director is bringing his comedic stylings to American politics. Julia Louis-Dreyfus continues her run as the second most successful cast member from Seinfeld to keep her career going strong with the HBO comedy series Veep. If Aaron Sorkin was a little more of a natural comedic writer, he would have written Veep instead of The West Wing. However, the political satire seems to be a bit less prevalent than the situational comedy, making it slightly less witty, but still very smart. Full ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Cast Confirmed to Return in New Episodes

According to series writer and co-executive producer Dean Lorey, the entire original cast of the Emmy-winning series Arrested Development will be returning for the new episodes in 2013. While this should have gone without saying once it was reported that Netflix had picked up the exclusive broadcast rights, it’s nice to get some confirmation from the show-runners since information has been hard to come by. Lorey himself said that “even the schedule is being kept under wraps.” Reprising their roles from the first run will be Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera, Tony Hale, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter, although there are still no formal deals in place.

On his blog, Lorey commented that he is penning a new season along with Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely and will begin shooting in 2012. There is still no word as to the exact number of episodes, only that it was suggested to do a 9 or 10 episode season to bridge the old series to (hopefully) a feature film. Hit the jump for more.

Hello, Michael. New Episodes of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming to Netflix

Expensive suits.  Quasi-incestuous relationships. Carl Weathers.  Minor Treason.  It’s been nearly six years since the Bluth family brought good wholesome entertainment into America’s living rooms.  But finally, after years of fan demand and seemingly endless rumors, new episodes of Arrested Development are returning to television in 2013.  Provided, of course, that television has Netflix.

Like Family Guy and Futurama before, Twentieth Century Fox is bringing back the critically-acclaimed sitcom (Time Magazine called it one of the best TV shows of ALL-TIME)  for a brand new season in 2013.  But unlike its animated counterparts, fresh episodes of Arrested Development will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix.  We told you back in March that Netflix would host original content with Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards, and while Development isn’t technically a Netflix original, the new episodes are surely the rental service’s highest-profile project to date.   Hit the jump for more on AD’s return.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Coming Back for New Season Before the Movie [Updated with Video of Reunion and Ron Howard Interview]

Earlier today, a tweet from The New Yorker, reporting straight from their own festival in New York, announced the unthinkable as Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz revealed during a cast reunion that the series would be back for another season, but that’s not all. This new season would lead directly into the long-gestating movie that has been talked about by each cast member, every other month, since the invention of television. Since that tweet, more details have surfaced from the festival from EW who reveals that Hurwitz intends to shoot 9 to 10 episodes, each focusing on on an individual character from the Bluth clan (which includes Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia DeRossi, David Cross, Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and Alia Shawkat). Each episode will catch audiences up on what the characters have been doing for the past five years since the series’ cancellation in 2006. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Cast Reunites for The New Yorker Festival

It turns out it’s possible to get the cast of Arrested Development to reunite, or at least reunite for one evening.  Gothamist [via The Playlist] reports that Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter will take the stage with Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz on October 2nd for a special panel.  I’m sure they’ll talk about free trade agreements, the philosophical merits of Kant and Heidegger, and other topics.  I doubt anyone will bring up the Arrested Development movie.  Who wants to hear about that?

In all seriousness, wouldn’t it be awesome if this is how they chose to announce that the film has a greenlight and firm start date?  It’s a bit of a long shot, but either way, you’d be crazy not to try and get into this event.  Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon.  Unfortunately, there’s no discount if you blue yourself.

Comic-Con 2011: MTV Announces Panels for BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, TEEN WOLF, DEATH VALLEY and GOOD VIBES

MTV is coming to Comic-Con, and today they announced what shows they’ll be bringing. Celebrating the triumphant return of Beavis and Butthead, Mike Judge will be on-hand for a panel focusing on the all new episodes with Johnny Knoxville acting as moderator. The cast and producers of Teen Wolf will appear for the new series’ panel, and Wes Craven will talk to the cast and producers of the new horror-comedy Death Valley.

In addition, there will be a panel for David Gordon Green’s (Pineapple Express) new animated series Good Vibes, with voice-cast members Adam Brody, Alan Tudyuk, Tony Hale, Debi Mazar and Jake Busey making an appearance alongside Green. Finally, a panel entitled “MTV Geek!” will feature Stan Lee revealing the story behind the new MTV Comics title The Seekers. HBO Picks Up Armando Iannucci’s VEEP Comedy Series Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Delivering one of the best political satire comedies I’ve seen in years, In the Loop writer and director Armando Iannucci just had his new comedy series Veep picked up by HBO. Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the series follows former Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), who becomes Vice President, only to discover the job is nothing like she expected, but everything she was warned about. The cast also includes In the Loop star Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale (Arrested Development) Matt Walsh (Outsourced) and more.

Iannucci says, “I’m thrilled more than anyone is legally entitled to be. HBO is the dream network to make television for, and I’m excited to be working with such a superb and funny cast headed by the uber-superb-and-funny Julia Louis-Dreyfus. If making season one of Veep is as much fun as making the pilot, then I can die chuckling. Plus, we get to say rude words.” Since In the Loop was filled with great comedy and colorful language, this sounds great to me. Hit the jump for the full press release with more details.

JUSTIFIED: Season One Blu-ray Review

Timothy Olyphant is a movie star, but only on television. Sadly, between Deadwood and Justified, he’s also one of the only actors today who’s a credible cowboy, having spent three years playing an old west lawman on Deadwood, and now the modern variant in Justified. Here Timothy Olyphant is Raylan Givens, a U.S. Marshall who’s moved from Florida – after shooting a man – to Kentucky, where he grew up. There, he’s surrounded by the life he left behind and tries to arrest Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), who may have blown up a church and killed a man or two. Based on the works of Elmore Leonard, this Graham Yost produced TV show is easily one of the most entertaining action/mystery serials in a good long while. Happythankyoumoreplease Trailer and Poster

One of the many films that premiered at last year’s Sundance Film festival was writer/director Josh Radnor’s happythankyoumoreplease.  While many might have thought Radnor only got into Sundance due to his CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, his film won the Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance last night, proving he belonged at the Festival.

Starring Radnor, Malin Akerman, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Tony Hale, and Pablo Schreiber, happythankyoumoreplease is about six New Yorkers juggling love and  friendship.  Even though the story is nothing new in the world of movies, I really enjoyed Radnor’s debut film.  Also, while many Sundance movies are tough to watch, happythankyoumoreplease is a really sweet romcom that’s sure to please audiences looking for an uplifting movie about love.

Sundance Audience Award Winner HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE Set For August 27 Release

Hannover House has picked up the rights and will release happythankyoumoreplease, the Dramatic Audience Award Winner at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival on August 27 (via Variety).  Written, directed and starring Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) the romantic comedy follows a New York writer and his friends who begin caring for a foster child who gets lost on the subway.

The new distributor, which is best known for its home video market, reportedly paid $1 million for the film and will open it in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Dallas before expanding it to 20 more markets on Labor Day. happythankyoumoreplease, which feels like a cousin to (500) Days of Summer and Garden State, also stars Malin Akerman (Watchman), Zoe Kazan (Me and Orson Welles), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Kate Mara (Shooter) and Pablo Schreiber (The Wire).

CHUCK The Complete Second Season Blu-ray Review

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up and be a secret agent overnight?  As the titular lead of the television show Chuck, Chuck Bartowski would probably say it’s not so nice, but he’s had his fair share of adventure and lady love.

For those who need a download of information on the series, brace yourselves.  Chuck works for the Nerd Herd department of a Burbank Buy More store, an ode to Best Buy’s Geek Squad (which, by the way, does have a Burbank location).  Chuck had a simple life until he opens an email sent from his former college roommate and the whole of the United States’ secret information gets downloaded directly into his brain.   More after the jump.

As we move closer to the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the first glimpses of movies playing at the festival are arriving online.  Since there are so many, we’ve decided to group them into a single article for your viewing pleasure.  The films we’ve included in this group are 3 Backyards starring Edie Falco and Elias Koteas; Abel directed by Diego Luna; Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams; Douchebag, which just has a catchy title; HappyThankYouMorePlease starring Kate Mara, Malin Akerman, Richard Jenkins, Tony Hale, and Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) who also wrote and directed the film; and Night Catches Us starring Kerry Washington and Anthony Mackie.  Hit the jump for the first images as well as brief synopses for all of these movies.
