Tarsem Singh to Direct KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 17th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

With his Greek-inspired epic Immortals currently in theaters and his take on Snow White, Mirror, Mirror, slated to release in March, director Tarsem Singh is setting his sights on the future. Singh is now reportedly attached to direct Killing on Carnival Row, a spec script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) that was originally set up six years ago. The noir fantasy-thriller revolves around a serial killer loose in Burgue, a future city that resembles 18th century London and is inhabited by both humans and other creatures.

Producers Arnold and Anne Kopelson previously had the project set up at New Line and were close to production with directors Guillermo del Toro, whose Pacific Rim was also written by Beacham, and Neil Jordan (The Brave One). Warner Bros. Already Looking for a Screenwriter for MAN OF STEEL Sequel?

File this one under rumor for now, but apparently Warner Bros. is happy with what they’re seeing from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and is already on the hunt for a screenwriter to tackle a sequel. Think McFly Think (via The Film Stage) reports that WB has put together wishlist of scribes that includes Steve Kloves (all the Harry Potter movies except Order of the Phoenix), Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark). While it wouldn’t at all be surprising that WB is getting a move on with a sequel (they’re contractually obligated to keep making Superman movies lest they lose the character rights), the report at this time is unfounded.

We’ve yet to see even a teaser trailer from Man of Steel and they’ve only released one official image thus far, so we’re pretty in the dark on the pic. We know that Christopher Nolan shepherded the film into production with a script by David S. Goyer, and we’ve got Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Supes. I like Michael Shannon as General Zod, and the rest of the cast filled out nicely (Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, etc.) so I’m hoping for the best. Man of Steel opens June 14th, 2013.

Legendary Pictures Buys Sci-Fi Script PACIFIC RIM from CLASH OF THE TITANS Screenwriter

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 28th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Legendary Pictures has made a pre-emptive buy on Pacific Rim, sci-fi spec script from Clash of the Titans screenwriter Travis Beacham.  According to Deadline, Pacific Rim is “set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.”  Isn’t that the plot of Gears of War and countless other sci-fi action stories?  I’m sure Beacham is slamming his head against his desk right now because I doubt this broad outline is what Legendary paid in the high-six-figures for .  I also won’t hold Beacham accountable for the awfulness of Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans, since that film underwent major changes from script to screen.

Pacific Rim is being set up as yet another of Legendary Pictures’ tentpole films.  The studio has Inception this summer, and in development it has Batman 3 and the Superman reboot, and adaptations of the video games Mass Effect and World of Warcraft (with the latter being directed by Sam Raimi).  As for Beacham’s, he’s also doing well.  He’s writing Timur Bekmambetov’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a remake of the 1979 sci-fi film The Black Hole for Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.

Fox Developing Their Own Adaptation of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA for Director Timur Bekmambetov

Fox 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Timur Bekmambetov slice

Yesterday we reported director David Fincher was in talks with Disney to direct an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea after the studio had passed on McG’s take on the classic adventure story back in November.  Now, Heat Vision is reporting that Fox is developing their own futuristic adaptation of the novel to be directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) from a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), which will be produced by filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott.

Since 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is in public domain anybody can adapt it, it’s just a weird coincidence that two major studios are doing it at the same time.  It will be interesting to see if Disney backs down now since Fox’s take on the project seems like it’s almost ready to go while Disney still has to still finalize a deal with Fincher and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum), who will then start to write the film.  It also seems unlikely that this will be Fincher’s next film since he’s currently attached to direct The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo next.

Needless to say, everyone at Collider is itching to see Fincher’s take on the material.  But if Fox gets out of the gate first, it’s hard to see Disney moving forward with the same movie.  I’m sure we’re going to hear a lot about both films over the next few weeks.

New CLASH OF THE TITANS Movie Posters in High Resolution

Warner Bros. has sent over high resolution versions of all the new Clash of the Titans movie posters that recently hit the net.  Originally scheduled for release on March 26 and in 2D, WB has moved the release date to April 2 and Clash is now going to be a 3D release.  While I have no idea how they were able to get this done so quickly, if they were able to make Clash look cool in 3D, I’m all for it.

As of now, there have been no test screenings of the film, and I don’t know anyone that’s seen the final version.  But I was on the set last year and what I saw looked awesome.  Look for my set report on the 18th – along with interviews with the cast.  Hit the jump to check out the posters in high res:

TRON LEGACY Writers Sucked into Disney’s Remake of THE BLACK HOLE

Joseph Kosinski (director) and Sean Bailey (producer) of Tron Legacy, the highly-anticipated sequel to 1982′s Tron, are teaming up again to revisit another Disney sci-fi classic: The Black Hole. The original followed a space expedition that bumps into another craft hovering just outside a black hole, on which the explorers find a scientist who refuses to let them go.  The $26 million feature was Disney’s most expensive at the time, and their first to receive a PG rating.

Though specifics on the project are scant, some aspects will remain the same while others won’t.  Namely, the menacing red robot Maximilian is expected to return, but the science behind black holes featured will be much closer to reality. Whether or not the plot will remain the same is unknown.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Travis Beacham is writing the project. Beacham is no stranger to remakes, with his Clash of the Titans slated to come out next year.  Kosinski, a commercial director by trade, is making his feature debut with Tron Legacy.  With that film slated for release on December 17, 2010 and Disney anxious to turn it into a serious franchise, it is unknown where The Black Hole would land in between potential Tron Legacy sequels.
