One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer-director Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal‘s first feature, The Words. The film stars Bradley Cooper as a writer who, after discovering an extraordinary lost manuscript, passes the work off as his own and receives overwhelming critical acclaim.  Jeremy Irons plays the man who originally wrote the manuscript, and the film weaves multiple narratives to tell the story.  The Words also stars Zoe Saldana, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde, Ben Barnes, and JK Simmons.  CBS Films bought the film after its first screening and they plan to release it later this year.  It’s definitely a film you should be excited to see.  For more on The Words, here’s Matt’s review.

Shortly after seeing the film, I did an extended interview with Bradley Cooper and co-writer-director Brian Klugman.  We talked about being at Sundance, how the project came together and how it changed along the way, deleted scenes, how the two of them became friends (they’ve known each other for decades), karaoke, film versus digital, and a lot more.  In addition, Klugman talked about his early draft of Tron: Legacy, and Cooper talked about what it was like to work on director Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, and the status of Paradise Lost (it’s hopefully filming this June).  Hit the jump to watch.

New Details on Disney XD’s TRON: UPRISING and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series

When the Walt Disney Company and Marvel announced their joint partnership a few years ago, both sides knew that there were some incredible creative opportunities and a whole lot of coin to be made in the years ahead. That more or less sums up what the Disney Channels’ President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said during a presentation at TCA. While I’m paraphrasing, of course, Marsh did go on to announce the next step in their partnership: a block of Marvel-themed series on Disney XD which will be called Marvel Universe, featuring a new collaboration, Ultimate Spider-Man. The new iteration will be the first time that Spidey, voiced by Drake Bell (Superhero Movie), won’t be going it along, as he’ll be joined by White Tiger, Iron Fist, Power Man and Nova, all of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. While that’s good news for fans of the web-head, Marsh also talked about the premiere of their anticipated animated series, TRON: Uprising. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

New Writer Hired to Pen Sequel to TRON: LEGACY

While rumors of a sequel to last year’s Tron: Legacy have permeated ever since that film’s release, it looks like Disney may finally be moving forward with a follow-up. Though Tron: Legacy did over $400 million, it was a very expensive flick (with a very expensive marketing campaign) and that amount wasn’t exactly the home run the Mouse House was looking for, so they’ve taken their time in deciding whether to move forward or not. Well now, Heat Vision reports that David DiGilio (Eight Below) has been tapped to start writing a sequel to Legacy. That film’s writers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, were expected to return if a follow-up came to fruition, but apparently they’ve been sidetracked by their ABC fairy tale series debuting on ABC this fall, Once Upon a Time.

Tron: Legacy set up a possible villain for a sequel with its cameo appearance by Cillian Murphy as the son of corrupt ENCOM CEO Ed Dillinger, played by David Warner in the original Tron. Furthermore, the DVD of Legacy included an epilogue-ish clip of Dillinger conspiring with his father, hinting at even more evilness to come! Hit the jump for more.

TRON: LEGACY/TRON 5-Disc Blu-ray Collector’s Set Review

When Tron: Legacy was announced, fans of the 1982 original were dumbfounded: nearly thirty years after the fact, Disney was putting together a sequel.  Furthermore, they’d somehow convinced Jeff Bridges– star of the original Tron– to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, Encom’s whiz-kid CEO.  That (and the sizzle reel the studio unveiled at Comic-Con a few years ago) indicated that Disney was taking this sequel very seriously: Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy promised to look, feel, and behave a lot like the original Tron… but with all the cutting-edge special effects and 3D that weren’t available back in the early 80′s.  After poking through the 5-disc Blu-ray set that Disney’s put together for Kosinski’s film, it’s clear that they’re interested in turning Tron into their next, big, Pirates of The Caribbean-sized franchise… but will another Tron sequel, an animated Tron TV show, and an onslaught of Tron merchandise catch on in the way that Disney’s clearly hoping it will?  Y’know, I think it’s got a shot.  Read on for our full review of the 5-disc Tron: Legacy Blu-ray collector’s set, after the jump.

New TRON: LEGACY DVD Easter Egg Hint at Villains for Possible Sequel

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: March 28th, 2011 at 7:59 pm

We heard in January that Disney filmed additional material specifically for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Tron: Legacy.  The official release is scheduled for April 5, but we sneaked a peak earlier this month with a leaked 10-minute clip of new footage, “Tron: The Next Day.”  That clip has since been taken down, but the resilient Youtube poster has uploaded a second clip from the DVD.

Though shorter (and less titled) than “Tron: The Next Day,” the new clip has even deeper implications on a possible Tron 3: it features a text conversation between the villainous Father and Son Dillinger that suggest the closing moments of “The Next Day” are just “a minor bump in the road” to their evil plan.  Watch it (while it’s still up) after the jump.

Watch TRON: THE NEXT DAY, a Clip of New Footage from the TRON: LEGACY Blu-ray/DVD

We know that Disney filmed additional footage specifically for the DVD/Blu-ray release of Tron: Legacy, but the nature and intent was in some doubt.  It was first reported there might be a teaser trailer for Tron 3, but that appears untrue.  (Another Tron sequel still hasn’t been greenlit, mind you — though it’s close.)  Some of this footage has surfaced online as a 10:27 clip  titled “Tron: The Next Day.”  The focus is bridging the decades between the two Tron films, and the story ties heavily into the “Flynn Lives” viral campaign before Tron: Legacy‘s release.  Garrett Hedlund, Bruce Boxleitner, and Dan Shor make appearances.

The current over/under on this leaked clip is about four hours, and I’m betting on the under.  So watch “Tron: The Next Day” while you still can after the jump.

Teaser Trailer for Disney XD Animated Series TRON: UPRISING; TRON: LEGACY Score to Get Remix

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 3rd, 2011 at 7:43 am

After TRON: Legacy landed with a thud, I’ve found it difficult to care about where the story goes from here.  However, Disney still believes in their black-and-neon franchise and they’re moving forward with the new animated series TRON: Uprising.  The series will air on Disney XD in summer 2012 and cover the events between the original TRON and Legacy.  A teaser trailer for the series has gone online and if you loved TRON: Legacy, then you’ll probably love this too.  It has light cycles and stuff.

More promising is an upcoming remix of TRON: Legacy‘s outstanding score.  Pitchfork reports that Disney will release Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D on April 5th and it will feature M83, Photek, Moby, Com Truise, and others remixing Daft Punk’s score.  The remix soundtrack is available to buy in various special editions on the score’s official website.  Hit the jump to check out the TRON: Uprising trailer and the track list for Tron: Legacy R3CONFIGUR3D.

INCEPTION, LET ME IN, TRON, and THE WALKING DEAD Top the 2011 Saturn Award Nominations

If you’re among the folk who believe the Academy Awards are too stodgy, too reluctant to embrace sci-fi, fantasy, and horror — the Saturn Awards are for you.  Sure, Best Picture nominee Inception led the field with nominations, but Let Me In and Tron: Legacy (just one Oscar nomination between them) fall close behind with 7 Saturn nominations apiece. Hereafter, Alice in Wonderland, Black Swan, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Never Let Me Go, and Shutter Island all landed 5 or more nominations.

The Walking Dead racked up the most television nominations with 6, followed by Breaking Bad, Fringe, and Lost with 5 each.  Hit the jump for the full list of nominees and a breakdown of the number of nominations by film/series.

TRON and TRON: LEGACY DVD/Blu-ray Details

TRON and TRON: LEGACY Blu-ray slice

Last week we posted the cover art for both Tron and TRON: Legacy on DVD/Blu-ray.  However, while we had the cover art, we didn’t have the release date, and Disney hadn’t yet announced what extras would be included.  That all changed today.

That’s because Disney has just announced Tron and TRON: Legacy will street on April 5.  The original Tron will be a 2-Disc DVD and/or Blu-ray, while TRON: Legacy will have a 1-Disc DVD and 3 different versions hitting Blu-ray.  You’ll be able to choose from a 2-Disc, 4-Disc or a 5-Disc version.  For what’s included on each edition hit the jump:

No TRON 3 Teaser Trailer on the TRON: LEGACY Blu-ray/DVD; Plus 5-Disc Combo Cover Art Revealed!

TRON: Legacy Blu-ray slice

Over the past month, we’ve heard a lot of rumors that Disney will be including a Tron 3 teaser trailer on the upcoming Tron: Legacy Blu-ray/DVD.  I’m a huge Tron nerd and would have loved to have seen this come true, but sources have told me that the rumors are false.  There isn’t a teaser trailer, trailer, or mention of a Tron 3 on the Blu-ray/DVD.

However, while we won’t be getting a teaser trailer, fans of Tron have plenty of reasons to be excited for Legacy‘s home video release.  That’s because the same sources have confirmed earlier reports that the Blu-ray is loaded with awesome extras that will expand the story of Tron: Legacy.  Hit the jump for more.  Including the cover art for the 4 and 5 disc combo Blu-rays!

Details on a TRON 3 Teaser That Will Appear on the TRON: LEGACY DVD – Updated

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 22nd, 2011 at 5:51 pm

I’m among the defenders of Tron: Legacy.  Mostly because of the visuals (duh), but I think the filmmakers put a lot of interesting ideas up on screen, then failed to explore them fully.  Legacy does not live up to its full potential, but lays the groundwork for a great sequel.

We know that Disney always hoped to establish a franchise.  The studio commissioned a sequel script last April and is reportedly very close to an official greenlight.  (Not to mention the animated series Tron: Uprising on Disney XD.)  But the extent of Disney’s planning may surprise you.  A new report suggests that Disney already has a teaser for Tron 3 in the can, and it will appear as a Tron: Legacy DVD extra.  As long as you don’t mind spoilers for the teaser or Tron: Legacy, hit the jump for details.

[Update: There's a listing for "Additional Production Material" for the Tron: Legacy DVD that, if it is this teaser, adds a bit of intrigue to the story.  Details below]

TRON: LEGACY DVD and Blu-ray Cover Art and Details?

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 17th, 2011 at 7:51 am

While Tron: Legacy is still playing in theaters around the world, it’s nearing the end of its theatrical run.  Thus far director Joseph Kosinski’s sequel has made over $324 million at the worldwide box office, which I’m not sure is enough to move forward with another sequel.  However, Disney really believes in Tron as they have Tron: Uprising (an animated series) airing on Disney XD later this year and the producer of Tron: Legacy (Sean Bailey) is in a position of power at the studio.  While many rumors have hit the net that a third Tron film is a go, I don’t think the studio is going to move forward on anything until they see the home video numbers.  After all, if the movie doesn’t sell on DVD or Blu-ray, that might influence the studio to kill any potential sequel.

Which brings us to why we’re here.  Our partners at Omelete have landed what appears to be the cover art for the Tron: Legacy DVD/Blu-ray (single disc editions) and they’ve also listed some of the extras.  While not confirmed by Disney, I’d imagine the listing is pretty accurate.  For more info and the cover art, hit the jump:

Is Disney Close to Green Lighting a Sequel to TRON: LEGACY?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 13th, 2011 at 8:48 am

tron_legacy_final_poster_hi-res_slice_01

TRON: Legacy has underperformed at the box office, but Disney may be close to taking viewers back to the Grid anyway.  AICN reports that the film is close crossing $300 million worldwide, which would be fantastic…had the film and its epic marketing campaign been inexpensive.  Harry Knowles reports that TRON: Legacy “is getting close, incredibly close to having its SEQUEL announced.”

For thoughts on where the potential sequel could go and what’s in store for the TRON franchise, hit the jump.
