Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Teaming Up for Original Series for Kids Based on TURBO

Fresh off the company’s wild success of the original series House of Cards (read Matt’s glowing review here), Netflix is continuing on with original content by developing a new show geared towards kids.  It was announced today that Netflix and DreamWorks Animation will be teaming up to create the first ever Netflix original series for kids.  The show will be an adaptation of DreamWorks’ upcoming racing film Turbo, which centers on a snail who has dreams of competing in a professional race.

The series, titled Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), picks up where the film leaves off as it “showcases the world-traveling exploits of our snail hero and his tricked-out racing crew as they master outrageous new stunts and challenge any villain unlucky enough to cross their path.”  As kids nowadays are learning to use an iPad before they can talk, this project sounds like a pretty smart idea.  Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer for Turbo and to read the press release.  The film opens in 3D on July 19th.

First Teaser Trailer and Poster for DreamWorks Animation’s TURBO Featuring the Voice of Ryan Reynolds

The first teaser trailer and poster for DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming racing movie Turbo have been released.  The story centers on a snail who, after miraculously attaining the power of super-speed, decides to fulfill his dream of racing in the Indy 500.  I got a kick out of the fact that The Chromatics’ “Tick of the Clock,” which was memorably used in last year’s decidedly violent Drive, opens this trailer, followed by another appropriately titled song from Cake.  This is very much a teaser trailer so we don’t see much by way of plot, but the brief bit of racing sequences look pretty impressive and Ryan Reynolds does a fine job with the snail’s comedy.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and click here to read Dave’s recap of the recent DreamWorks Animation presentation which included footage from Turbo.  The film also features the voices of Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg, and Samuel L. JacksonTurbo opens in 3D on July 19, 2013.

Ben Schwartz Talks HOUSE OF LIES, COFFEE TOWN, and Voice Work in TURBO and RANDY CUNNINGHAM

Already renewed for Season 2, the hit Showtime comedy series House of Lies closes out its first season with unexpected twists and surprises, as Marty Kaan’s (Don Cheadle) management consultant team at Galweather & Stearn fight the MetroCapital acquisition. Actor Ben Schwartz plays Clyde Oberholt, a major suck-up and voracious womanizer, who pulls his weight at work but uses his status to attract as many women as he can while he’s on his rise to the top.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ben Schwartz talked about how excited he is to be doing a role that mixes drama with comedy and allows him the opportunity to do so many things, how he plants little things in throughout the season to enrich his character, how he’s looking forward to getting deeper into his backstory in Season 2, and what Clyde really thinks of the people he’s working with. He also talked about shooting the indie film Coffee Town with Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Steve Little (Eastbound and Down), doing the animated series Randy Cunningham: Ninth Grade Ninja for Disney XD and premiering in September, and voicing a character for the DreamWorks Animation feature Turbo, with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader and More Join Voice Cast for TURBO; Plus a Teaser Image from the Film

DreamWorks Animation has assembled its ginormous ensemble voice cast for the snail-centered film Turbo. Ryan Reynolds is already onboard to voice the protagonist, an ordinary garden snail who obtains extraordinary speed through a freak accident and sets out to race in the Indianapolis 500. Now Heat Vision reports that (deep breath) Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, and Snoop Dogg are set to join the cast. David Soren is directing from a script he co-wrote with Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).

I love the voice cast here but I’m not wild about the premise. Pixar already tried to do a movie set in the professional racing world twice to less than stellar results, and this new teaser image doesn’t exactly alleviate any of my concerns. It should be said that it’s still early in the animation process and this image doesn’t exactly reflect the finished film, but I certainly don’t think it’s a great start. Hit the jump to check out the image for yourself. Turbo is slated for July 19th, 2013.

Release Dates for MARGARET(!), THE BIG WEDDING, TURBO, LEAFMEN, and WALKING WITH DINOSAURS

If you’ll indulge me, I’d like to catch up to a few of the release dates announced over the last week.  My primary motivation: Margaret finally has an official release date!  Kenneth Lonergan was greeted with critical acclaim for his directorial debut You Can Count on Me in 2000, enough to guarantee the director final cut on his follow-up, Margaret.  Lonergan shot the film in 2005 with a top-shelf cast including Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, Allison Janney, Olivia Thirlby, plus You Can Count on Me stars Mark Ruffalo and Matthew Broderick.  Fox Searchlight initially planned for a 2007 release, but Lonergan was unable to find the movie he wanted in the editing bay.  Margaret has been tangled up in legal delays over the last couple years, but its day has come.  September 30, 2011, specifically.  Announcing the release date less than two months in advance usually isn’t followed by heavy promotion and Oscar buzz — I’m just excited that we will finally get to see this thing.

Ryan Reynolds is a busy man — his schedule is currently mapped out clear into 2014. In the next few years, Reynolds will portray characters in three comic book adaptations (Green Lantern, R.I.P.D. and Deadpool) and voice a character in the DreamWorks Animation flick The Croods. DreamWorks must have liked working with Reynolds as Variety reports the studio is in final talks with the Green Lantern star to voice Turbo, the world’s fastest snail.

David Soren (Merry Madagascar) will direct from a script he co-wrote with Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).  Turbo is schedule for release on June 7, 2013.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis for Turbo.

DreamWorks Animation has announced their schedule through 2014 and it’s loaded with both original projects and sequels.  As far as sequels, the studio has three planned and they include Kung Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3 and How to Train Your Dragon 2.  While I’m very excited for a sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, some of their upcoming original projects also sound great.  The two that immediately stand out are Me and My Shadow (which will combine both CG and traditional animation) and director Rob Minkoff’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman - which is based on Jay Ward’s classic cartoon and will feature the voice of Robert Downey Jr.!  Here’s the release schedule:
