Honored for his extraordinarily moving, and now Oscar-nominated, portrayal of an undocumented worker in A Better Life, Demian Bichir was presented with a Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). Collider was there to cover and attend the event, and we’ve compiled the highlights of what the well-respected actor had to say, both on the press line and during the Q&A.
While there, Demian Bichir talked about what the whole award season experience has been like for him, getting to bond with some of his fellow nominees, what it means to him to be recognized for this powerful character, how he initially met director Chris Weitz a couple years prior when he auditioned for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, flying back and forth to Mexico so that he can continue a play that he’s currently doing, and how his nomination is dedicated to the 11 million human beings who work with pride, power and dignity to help this society go forward. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

While we have a lot of great writers on Collider, I’ve decided to locate a Twilight super fan to review our copy of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 on Blu-ray. I’m not looking for someone who thinks it’s the greatest movie ever made, and I’m not looking for someone who hates it either. I’m trying to find someone who loves the books and the films and can do an objective review while also writing about all the special features, commentaries, and the extra things on the Blu-ray. If you think you’ve got what it takes, hit the jump:

Excitement! Yet another noteworthy release date is just around the corner for Twilight fans, as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 hits DVD shelves on February 10th. To build anticipation for the release (because it’s seriously lacking in anticipation), a behind-the-scenes clip from the DVD’s special features has been released. This isn’t just any behind-the-scenes featurette, as it takes fans on the set during the filming of the all-important wedding scene. Director Bill Condon describes his intention with the scene, and Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart make out. It’s good times all around.
Hit the jump to check out the clip. Breaking Dawn – Part 1 hits DVD shelves February 11th. As we previously reported, select Target stores will be hosting the world premiere of a scene from Breaking Dawn – Part 2 during the midnight DVD release.

While that November release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 may seem like an eternity to die-hard fans, Summit has a treat in store for those heading out to pick up Breaking Dawn – Part 1 on DVD. In nearly 500 stores across the country, EW reports that Target will be hosting the world premiere of an exclusive scene from Breaking Dawn – Part 2 during the midnight DVD/Blu-ray release of Part 1. The clip will screen at 11pm at select stores as fans are waiting in line to pick up their copy of the first half of the finale.
This is a pretty ingenious decision on Target’s part, as the store ensures that most Twihards (and by golly there’s a lot of them) will choose Target as their Part 1 DVD source. In addition to the regular edition of the DVD/Blu-ray, Target will also be selling a Limited Collector’s Edition DVD that includes—deep breath—an authentic prop flower from Bella and Edward’s wedding scene. To find out if your local Target will be participating in the Part 2 clip premiere, click here. For the rest of you, The Twilight Saga comes to an end on November 16th.

Hot on the heels of the first image from The Bourne Legacy, we’ve got new images from Ridley Scott’s sci-fi pic Prometheus, the next James Bond entry Skyfall, Pixar’s upcoming fairy tale Brave, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. While nothing’s too groundbreaking, we do get our first official look at Daniel Craig in Skyfall (Correction: the image is actually from Casino Royale, so we’re still lacking an official image of Craig in Skyfall), and you can’t really get enough of Martin Freeman as Bilbo in The Hobbit. The Twilight image seems familiar so I’m not entirely sure it’s new , but I figured Twilight fans wouldn’t mind another gander if they’ve seen it before (Correction: it’s from Breaking Dawn: Part 1, but I still included it because, you know, Bella and Edward).

Earlier this month, we mentioned that Lions Gate Entertainment’s The Hunger Games must make at least $100 million in order to justify the sequels being made. While there’s no doubt in my mind the movie will make that at the box office, the independent film company does have another source of income: merge with Summit Entertainment. The studio that’s behind the current Twilight series (which has earned over $1 billion through 4 of its 5 planned films) is reportedly in talks with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. about a potential merger. The benefit to Lions Gate would be a much-needed cash infusion. This, in turn, could ensure the production of The Hunger Games sequels, which could pay dividends for Summit if successful. Hit the jump for more on the possibility of a merger.

On the AMC Western drama Hell on Wheels, actor Christopher Heyerdahl plays Thor Gundersen, also known as The Swede, who is Thomas Durant’s (Colm Meaney) ruthless head of security. His tactics help him maintain a degree of control over the chaotic traveling town, but he abuses his power to extort money from its residents.
During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Christopher Heyerdahl talked about how he came to be a part of Hell on Wheels, what he enjoys about playing such a complex and complicated character as The Swede, that he’s developed the character through extensive research both in books and in his own Norwegian heritage, and the challenge of shooting the Western concurrently with his SyFy series Sanctuary. He also talked about playing the ancient Volturi vampire Marcus in the Twilight Saga films, the deleted scene from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 that he hopes will end up on the DVD, what audiences can look forward to with Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and what it’s been like to have the support of genre fans. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

It may not have topped last year’s holiday in terms of totals, but Thanksgiving 2011 did prove bountiful for a handful of films. While it fell short of breaking a series record, there is no diminishing the continued success of The Twilight Saga. The penultimate chapter in Summit Entertainment’s astoundingly popular franchise, Breaking Dawn Part 1 posted this year’s second highest weekend total (and the fifth highest of all time) with an estimated $139.5 million from 4,061 locations.

I’m always surprised when I like anything Twilight-related. I’ve written at length on how I find the subtext of the movies repulsive even though I can understand how the text can be enjoyed as shallow fantasy. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 even managed to wrap me up in that fantasy for the first half of the movie. I’m not immune to big weddings and romantic honeymoons, and the first half is filled with happiness and humor. Sadly, the second half of Breaking Dawn transforms into the mopey and idiotic drama I endured for the past three movies, but at least this time the series reached some glorious so-bad-it’s-good moments.

While at the big Los Angeles press junket for Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, I got the opportunity to chat with Wyck Godfrey, producer of all the films in the very popular franchise. Even though they are still hard at work at putting the finishing touches on Part 2, he is now able to step back a bit and reflect on his involvement with the entire experience.
During this exclusive interview with Collider, Wyck Godfrey talked about the great moment of elation and happiness that he had when they finished shooting, what it’s been like to see the same dedicated fans supporting them throughout, what director Bill Condon brought to the franchise and the actors’ performances, the level of secrecy involved with keeping the design of Bella’s wedding dress a secret, that there is a longer honeymoon scene and a Volturi scene for the eventual DVD, the challenges in getting Bella and Edward’s child right, and how Bella being a vampire in Part 2 is going to blow people away. He also talked about his hit ABC television series Revenge, and the next feature films that he’s focusing on – the Biblical epic Goliath, starring Dwayne Johnson, and an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel, Safe Haven. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

With Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 hitting theaters tomorrow at midnight, it’s time for our final interview and it’s with director Bill Condon. During my exclusive interview, Condon talked about how he got involved in the franchise, what props he took home, whether or not he did any test screenings, if the DVD/Blu-ray will have an extended edition, deleted scenes, the Easter eggs (you should stay through the credits), Bella’s transformation, and his future projects. In addition, Condon revealed that his first cut of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was 2 hours 14 minutes and now it’s about 1 hour 52 minutes without credits. Hit the jump to watch.

Even though the directors of the Twilight Saga films have been different for each installment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has been a constant throughout. With the bulk of her work having ended more than a year ago, she’s already moved on to other writing and producing projects, but is also enjoying the opportunity to relive it for the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.
During this exclusive interview with Collider, done at the film’s press junket, Melissa Rosenberg talked about the overwhelming passion of the fans, how wonderful it was to collaborate with director Bill Condon for the final two-part installment, what went into the creative decision to turn Breaking Dawn into two films, how much fun she had as a guest at Bella and Edward’s wedding, and how much she loved getting to introduce all the new characters in Part 2, due out in November 2012. She also talked about the next feature she’s writing, called Earthseed (adapted from a young adult sci-fi novel about a strong, kick-ass young woman), and Afterthought, the NBC series that she’ll be producing. Check out what she had to say after the jump.
