Judd Apatow Didn’t Find Ricky Gervais Funny; Solicits Twitter Followers for Funnier, Less Snarky Jokes

For once, it wasn’t the red carpet fashion dos and don’ts that overshadowed the Golden Globes but host Ricky Gervais’ politically incorrect jokes. And while the majority of viewers found him funny, Judd Apatow clearly wasn’t amused by his caustic humor, tweeting “I thought Joan Rivers did a wonderful job hosting the Golden Globes tonight” and “Ricky Gervais should do an episode of extras where he hosts the golden globes and is out of tune. Cut to female friend looking disappointed.”

The director felt that the Brit had gone too far in his quest to deflate some overinflated Hollywood egos. So he asked his Twitter followers to send him funny but less mean-spirited jokes for his stint as host of the untelevised PGA Awards, Check them out after the jump.

Tim Burton Writing New STAINBOY Tale with Twitter Help

Tim Burton is conducting a social art experiment over on Twitter, enlisting the aid of the creative masses to create a short story with his Stainboy character by allowing users to submit a sentence that fits with the last entry of the story. Burton laid the groundwork with this (via TheWrap):

“Stainboy, using his obvious expertise, was called in to investigate mysterious glowing goo on the gallery floor.”

Given the eccentric nature of Burton’s storytelling, it goes without saying that he’s willing and able to let the project go to some sinister, zany places. He calls this collective brainstorm the “Cadavre Exquis” or “Exquisite Corpse” technique. 40 contributions have made the cut thus far, but Stainboy’s journey is hardly over. Nathan Fillion Begins Twitter Campaign to Play Nathan Drake in UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE

Last week, writer-director David O. Russell left Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and came on board to write and direct and adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  It’s interesting to see O. Russell leave one genre project for another when you consider that his last movie was “an existential comedy”.  But who will star as protagonist Nathan Drake?  Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion thinks it should be him.  Fillion has begun a Twitter campaign to have his almost 650,000 followers cheer for him to get the role.  Hit the jump for why I think Fillion would be great for the part and the obstacles I see in the way of him getting it.

William Shatner Interview S#*! MY DAD SAYS

Based on the popular Twitter feed by Justin Halpern, the new CBS comedy S#*! My Dad Says follows Ed Goodson (William Shatner), a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes in expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot. His own children – Henry, a struggling writer-turned-unpaid blogger, and Vince, the meek half of a husband/wife real estate duo – are often on the receiving end of his verbal assaults, so when Henry finds he can no longer afford to pay rent and he moves in with his dad, he knows there will be no escape.

In a recent interview to promote his first sitcom, actor William Shatner talked about the appeal of this character, trying something he’s never done before and what gives him the desire to continue to act, when so many of his peers have retired. He also mentioned that he plans to continue releasing music and books, and that even though he’s friends with J.J. Abrams now, he knows that working him into the next Star Trek film just might prove too difficult to do. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Sylvester Stallone Wants Bruce Willis to Play a “Super Villain” in THE EXPENDABLES Sequel

Per the source of any/all relevant breaking news, Twitter, Sylvester Stallone is not only already planning The Expendables sequel, he is wining and dining Bruce Willis as a potential cast member.  Stallone recently tweeted:

“Had dinner with Bruce Willis last night. I want him in EXPENDABLES II as a super villain. What do you think?”

What do I think, Sly?  For starters, I think you should stop boasting about having dinner with Bruce Willis.  No one likes a braggart.  In regards to the film, I’m all for Bruce Willis doing whatever the hell he wants to do (the dude’s Bruce Willis).  That said, isn’t there an aging WWE star and/or Ultimate Fighting Champion that “acts” on the side and who would probably keep the film’s overhead lower (the ten year old kid in me votes for “The Undertaker”)?  I mean, it’s not like The Expendables sequel isn’t going to rule the box office for a couple of weeks or so regardless of its antagonist.

This, of course, is just my opinion.  What are your thoughts on a sequel to The Expendables and its “super villain?”  Sly wants your input directly so feel free to leave it in the comments.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Tweets a Nice Photo of Captain Jack Sparrow on the Set of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is currently tweeting photos from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  His latest is a nice photo of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in silhouette.  I’m not exactly why his sword is drawn, but maybe Jack has now becoming enemies with the horizon.  Anything is possible in these movies.

While I know a lot of people soured on the franchise after the sequels, I’m still looking forward to the fourth film.  I presume Bruckheimer must be as well after this summer’s double-misfire of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  Hit the jump to check out the image.  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is slated to open on May 20, 2011.

Creator and Executive Producer Jeff Eastin Interview WHITE COLLAR

Jeff Eastin is the creator and executive producer of the popular USA Network original series White Collar, about the unlikely partnership of con artist Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and FBI Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay).

After graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in journalism, he landed a position as director of photography on two Roger Corman films that were being shot locally, before heading out to try his luck in Hollywood. He soon wrote a movie that Jamie Foxx starred in, and then began to get involved with television, doing a UPN series called Shasta and creating Hawaii for NBC, eventually making his way to the USA Network with White Collar.

During a recent interview, writer/executive producer Jeff Eastin talked about how White Collar came about, why he thinks the show works so well and where he plans to take it in Season 2. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Amanda Bynes Announces #Retirement on Twitter

I don’t know if any celebrity has retired via Twitter before, but as far as I know, Amanda Bynes is the most famous to do so.  She laid the groundwork for her announcement, noting “Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem,” then dropped the bomb less than an hour later with three consecutive tweets:

If I don’t love something anymore I stop doing it… I don’t love acting anymore so I’ve stopped doing it… I know 24 is a young age to retire but you heard it here first I’ve #retired.

Bynes grew up on the Nickelodeon shows All That and The Amanda Show, moving on to headline romantic comedies such as What a Girl Wants and She’s the Man.  Lately she’s been more of a supporting player, with a role in the 2007 musical Hairspray and the upcoming Emma Stone high school comedy Easy A.  The latter appears to be her last film, assuming the account has not been hacked, and the announcement is indeed official.

Kat Dennings Exclusive Interview – Talks DEFENDOR, THOR, Twitter, DAYDREAM NATION, More

This may be one of the best interviews I’ve ever done.  Steve is the interviewing master and has done way more than me, but I’m really proud of this one because it eventually turned into a conversation.  It helps that Kat Dennings is a ridiculously cool chick.  I spoke to her because she co-stars in the new movie Defender, which hit theaters in limited release a few days ago.

Usually, the interview is the standard Q&A and later I judge how badly I did (my apologies to Diablo Cody/Ellen Page and to Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost).  But Dennings has certified geek credentials and while I had to bring up Thor because she’s in it, she knew her comics and grew up with them.  It’s clear that it’s not just being in a big blockbuster movie, but being in the Marvel Universe.  All she could tell me was that her character is not from the comics and they haven’t shot her scenes yet.

We also talked about comics in general, her upcoming movie Daydream Nation with Josh Lucas, her involvement in social media and how she’s switched from keeping a blog (that she started back in 2002) to Twitter (I recommended that she follow Roger Ebert), among other topics.  Hit the jump to read our conversation and hopefully you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed having it.

Another SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD Test Screening Yields More Twitter Responses

Coco Joins Twitter!

That’s right ladies and gentlemen; our favorite exiled funny man began spreading his humor via Twitter today!  As of this writing, Conan O’Brien has already drawn nearly 200,000 followers.  He hasn’t even been on Twitter for a full day!  Fifty bucks says this single tweet is funnier than Leno’s entire monologue when he returns to NBC.   Here’s what he had to say “Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial.  Somebody help me.”  Follow Coco’s twittings here http://twitter.com/conanobrien.

Marvel @Twitter! News about the THOR Set and IRON MAN 2 Trailer in 140 Characters or Less!

It’s a bit bizarre that Twitter is so polarizing when it’s just a tool.  It’s such a weird thing to get mad at and the accusation that it’s furthering the ADD of our culture is just silly because we were gone further it anyway.  But like all tools it can be useful.  That’s why instead of sending out a press release, Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada and prolific comic writer Brian Michael Bendis can quickly give their thoughts about Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Thor.  For instance, here’s what Bendis had to tweet: “Thor movie meeting with Ken Branagh [sic] was over the top amazing. Visited the sets! I was in Odin’s chamber!”  It’s really good news that one of Marvel’s top writers is so enthusiastic about a movie based on a Marvel project and I don’t have to re-tweet something like, “Thor movie looks like an abomination.  What have I done with my life?  Goodbye Crool World.”

But in news that was unexpected as well as exciting, @JonFavreau all but said we’re getting the first trailer for Iron Man 2 with Sherlock Holmes on December 25^th.  It makes sense seeing as folks love the Robert Downey Jr (as well they should) and he stars in both movies. This is the power and the glory of Twitter.  This is straight from the director.  Not the rumor mill, not from a leak, but from the director making use of a new technology to get fans excited.  You can also follow me on Twitter and you can follow Steve!  The possibilities are endless!

Adam Lambert Exclusive Video Interview 2012

Opening this Friday is director Roland Emmerich’s 2012.  As most of you have seen in commercials and trailers, 2012 is about a global cataclysm that causes massive destruction to our planet.  If you’re keeping count, this is Emmerich’s third time blowing up our planet (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) and I think he’s learned from his previous efforts to deliver his biggest spectacle yet.  Trust me, this movie is loaded with some of the craziest special effects you’ll see this year and if you want to have some fun, grab a popcorn and soda and hit a theater this weekend.

Writer/Director Richard Kelly Exclusive Video Interview THE BOX

Earlier today I sat down with writer/director Richard Kelly (“Donnie Darko”, “Southland Tales”) to talk about his upcoming movie “The Box”.  For those who don’t know, the movie is set around a deceptively simple moral dilemma.  An average couple is offered an opportunity to get themselves out of financial difficulty: a million dollars, in exchange for the knowledge that their acceptance of this gift will result in the death of one person somewhere in the world – someone they don’t know.  The big question is, “What will they do?” But writer/director Richard Kelly is also asking, “What would you do?”

While some interviews are rushed, our conversation was extensive and if you’re a fan of Richard Kelly or just curious about “The Box”, then you’ll definitely want to watch this. He talked about how the Arcade Fire came to the project, when will the score be released, the writing process, how his dad really worked at NASA and how he influenced James Marsden’s character, is the Blu-ray of both “Donnie Darko” and “Southland Tales” the final editions of those films, what will be on “The Box” Blu-ray, what is he working on now, and so much more.
