Terrence Malick has three movies in the works, and the timeline on when each will be shot/released is fuzzy.  The untitled romantic drama starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams is up first, though we don’t know release date (or even year) yet.  We have seen Malick filming Christian Bale for Knight of Cups and working with Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara for Lawless, but international distributor FilmNation announced these two films will shoot back to back in 2012.  Mara clarified the picture in a recent interview:

“[Lawless is] something that I hope to do, but it’s unfortunately not until September, so it’s a ways away.”

That timeline implies the plan is to shoot Knight of Cups earlier in the year, followed by production on Lawless.  Given how much time Malick generally spends in post-production, I imagine the director will spend a lot of 2012 in the editing room for the Affleck/McAdams drama.  The Tree of Life ended up in theaters a year and a half after the initially announced Christmas 2009 release date.  I expect similar delays for at least one of these projects.  More after the jump.

Earlier this week, we reported that writer-director Terrence Malick had two new films (both starring Christian Bale) in the pipeline, which was surprising considering the huge time gap between Malick’s previous movies.  But neither of the Bale movies are the follow-up to The Tree of Life.  Malick’s next movie is an untitled romantic drama (previously titled The Burial) he shot last year, and 24 Frames has some new details on the plot.  To begin, it’s Malick’s first movie set in the present day, and he’s currently at work editing the picture, which he expects to be finished by next year (although that doesn’t mean a distributor will release it in 2012).  So what’s this mystery flick about?  Philandering!  Europeans!  Oklahoma!

Hit the jump for more details.  The film stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper, and Jessica Chastain.

Jessica Chastain Talks Untitled Terrence Malick Drama and Guillermo del Toro-produced MAMA

At the press day for The Debt, in which Jessica Chastain (The Help, Tree of Life) plays Mossad secret agent Rachel Singer – on a mission to track down a Nazi war criminal in East Berlin in 1966 – the actress talked about her next project, doing her first genre film, Mama. Describing it as similar to The Ring and The Orphanage, and it being done by Guillermo del Toro’s company, she admitted to being trepidatious about taking on the role, but also excited about it, for that same reason.

She also talked about working with Terrence Malick again on his still untitled next project, and said she’s not even sure whether she’ll actually end up in the film because she doesn’t even know what it’s about. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

New Details on Terrence Malick’s Romantic Drama Starring Ben Affleck, and Is He Shooting Another Film This Year?

Writer/director Terrence Malick’s latest film, The Tree of Life, just opened in limited release this weekend, marking only the fifth film released by the auteur in an almost 40-year career. To say Malick takes his time in choosing and editing projects is an understatement. But the director’s trademark lag between productions may now be a thing of the past. Last year, Malick shot his follow-up to Tree of Life, a romantic drama starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper and Olga Kurylenko. While details on the plot are extremely hard to come by (typical of a Malick film), a bit more information has been unveiled about the drama.

Previously referred to as Burial, the untitled drama is a love story described as being even more experimental than Tree of Life, a film that has drawn some polarizing responses given its lack of narrative and expansive reach for greatness, despite winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Someone who has seen footage from Malick’s follow-up stated that the director’s trademark meditativeness “is there in spades.” Even more interesting, though, is the fact that Malick has alerted his production crew to keep the summer and fall open to possibly shoot another film this year. The first image from Terrence Malick’s untitled romantic drama has gone online.  Not much is known about the plot, but the film stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Olga Kurylenko, and Rachel Weisz.  The image, which features Affleck and McAdams, looks gorgeous.  But saying that a Malick film looks beautiful is like saying the sky is blue (except when Malick shoots it and then it becomes a haunting reddish haze of torment and regret).

Hit the jump to check out the image.  Malick’s previous film, The Tree of Life, finally hits theaters on May 27th.  No release date has been announced for his untitled feature.

Critically-acclaimed director Terrence Malick has yet to unveil his new film Tree of Life, but The Playlist is reporting that Malick is already into deep production on his next feature. The not-yet-titled feature, which stars Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, Rachel Wiesz, and Olga Kurylenko has just brought on actor Barry Pepper, of Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile fame, who will reportedly play a priest along with Bardem. A local newspaper caught the cast and crew filming in Pawhuska, Oklahoma this week, though no interviews or details about the production were given.

Malick, who directed 1998’s Best Picture nominee The Thin Red Line and 2005’s The New World, has already completed production on Tree of Life, though no word on an official release date beyond 2011 has appeared online. Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and is said to follow a family through multiple generations, time and space. Recent news suggests the film has been granted a PG-13 rating.  More after the jump.

Ben Affleck Replaces Christian Bale in Terrence Malick’s Next Movie; Rachel Weisz also Joins Cast

While Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life continues to look for a release date and/or a festival at which to premiere, the director is currently casting his next project.  In February, we reported that Malick had cast Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, and Olga Kurylenko in the untitled movie.  Today, TheWrap reports that Ben Affleck has replaced Christian Bale and that Rachel Weisz will also join the cast.

TheWrap’s story follows a report from TulsaWorld.com [via AICN] that Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Garner were spotted at a local store buying fishing supplies, and that Affleck had told a store employee that he was playing a fisherman in a movie that was shooting in Bartlesville.  Production is slated to begin the first week in October in Oklahoma, but TheWrap also reports that “The head of Oklahoma’s Film & Music office would not confirm that Malick would be shooting a movie in the state.”  As for the movie itself, not much is known other than it’s a love story.
