A French trailer has gone online for the sci-fi romantic-thriller Upside Down starring Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst. We showed you some images from the movie last month, but they were mostly right side-up and didn’t convey the dizzying and impressive visuals. The trailer gives a better look at the gorgeous set design and I love the use of the upside down effect. However, the story seems a little rote. The characters live in two worlds that are connected but on top of each other and each with its own gravitation pull. No one from one world can cross over to the other or even communicate with someone on the other side, but Sturgess and Dunst’s characters fall in love and break the rule. I hope the plot is a little more than just a love story across borders where the only twist is having the border be on an unconventional axis.

Some new images have surfaced from the peculiar sci-fi flick Upside Down. Directed by Juan Solanas (Northeast), the film is a love story told across two separate universes. Jim Sturgess plays a man who falls in love with a woman when he catches a glimpse of her on his television screen as a child. His infatuation continues to grow, but he’s hindered by the fact that she lives in an inverted universe separate from his that has its own gravity. The images give us a look at Sturgess and his co-star Kirsten Dunst, and we also get a glimpse at some of the neat looking effects Solanas has put into play. The images aren’t fantastic quality, but the intriguing premise and the odd look of the inverted world are enough to pique my interest.

Opening this weekend is The Way Back and it’s the first film from director Peter Weir (Witness, Master And Commander, & Dead Poet’s Society) in seven years. Starring Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Mark Strong, Jim Sturgess, and Saoirse Ronan, the film is inspired by the true story of a group of “multi-national prisoners from a Siberian gulag in 1940 and their epic life affirming journey over thousands of miles across five hostile countries.” The film is based on Slavomir Rawicz’s acclaimed book, The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom, as well as other real life accounts. You can watch seven clips from the film here.
Anyway, I recently got to speak with most of the cast and Peter Weir and I’ll be posting a new interview everyday this week. Up first is Jim Sturgess. During the interview, Sturgess talked about how he got the part and what it was like to meet Weir for the first time. In addition, he talked about working with a group of actors rather than having to play scenes on his own. Finally, we talked about his upcoming projects Upside Down (which stars Kirsten Dunst) and One Day (which stars Anne Hathaway). Hit the jump to watch the interview:
