Ed Helms Talks JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME, THE OFFICE, THE HANGOVER 3, the VACATION Sequel/Remake, and More

Opening this weekend, in limited release, is writer/directors Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus) Jeff Who Lives at Home.  Starring Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) as two brothers, with Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) as their mother, Jeff Who Lives at Home follows Jeff (Segel) as he searches for meaning in his life and inadvertently helps his brother, Pat (Helms) discover a truth of his own.  For more on the very funny film, here’s three clips, twenty images, the trailer, and my Toronto Film Festival interview with the Duplass Brothers.

During my recent interview with Ed Helms, we talked about got he got involved in the project, how the movie was mostly shot in order, the way the cast improvised on set, M.Night Shyamalan‘s Signs (which plays a big part in the film), deleted scenes, and more.  In addition, Helms also talked about whether our interview for The Lorax helped with the box office, Ron Swanson, his favorite TV shows, The Hangover 3, and what it’s like to be in the “home stretch” of the series run of The Office.  Hit the jump to watch.

Ed Helms Denies Involvement with VACATION Sequel/Remake

New Line has been prepping a new entry in the Vacation franchise for quite a while now, but the project finally picked up steam when Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were pegged to write the script. This past February, we learned that not only had Daley and Goldstein written the script, but now the duo are set to direct the project. The film is imagined as a sequel/reboot to the classic series and will center on an adult version of Rusty Griswold now dealing with a family of his own.

Rumors swirled recently that Ed Helms may possibly be taking on the lead role in the project, but when Steve spoke to the actor at the press day for his upcoming dramedy Jeff Who Lives at Home, he responded, “I don’t know where those rumors bubbled up from.”  Hit the jump for more.

HORRIBLE BOSSES Writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to Direct VACATION Reboot

John Francis Daley is Ron Howard-ing right before our eyes.  The former Freaks and Geeks child star successfully made the transition behind the camera with his screenwriting partner Jonathan Goldstein on the summer hit Horrible Bosses.  Daley and Goldstein have also been developing a Vacation reboot for a couple years now.  According to THR, the duo is now in talks with New Line to direct their script which serves as both a sequel and a reboot of National Lampoon’s Vacation series.  The story centers on the adult version of Rusty Griswold, played by a 14-year-old Anthony Michael Hall in the original.

Thanksgiving Top 5: Road Trip Movies

For me, one of the highlights of the Thanksgiving holiday is the trip home: it’s blissfully between the demands of work and the insanity of a family gathering. While holiday traffic is usually my biggest concern during the trek, movies have made quite a bit of money off of dreaming up ways a road trip can go wrong. If you’re driving this holiday week, stay safe. If you’re lucky enough to be a passenger and need some suggestions on movies to pass the time, well you’re in luck! Chevy Chase Talks VACATION Reboot and FLETCH, Says He’s Written a Script for New VACATION

Earlier today I was lucky enough to be able to visit the set of one of my favorite shows on any channel: NBC’s Community.  I got to visit the set in anticipation of the season two DVD, which hits stores September 6^th, and season three, which premieres on Thursday September 22^nd at 8/7c.  While I’ll have a lot of video interviews with the entire cast very soon, I spoke with Chevy Chase about the upcoming Vacation reboot and a new Fletch movie and wanted to bring you what he said as soon as possible.

A reboot of the Vacation franchise is currently in development at Warner Bros., and when I spoke with producer David Dobkin last month, he said that the new film would tell son Rusty’s story and have him encountering the same hijinks that his father did. Dobkin played coy about Chase making an appearance in the film, but Chase’s answer today about a Vacation reboot came as a bit of a shock.  He said he’s written a different script for a new Vacation film with co-star Beverly D’Angelo.  He said:

“I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy somewhere who’s been left there from an old Survivor series.”

Director David Dobkin Talks THE CHANGE-UP, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, R.I.P.D., His King Arthur Movie and the VACATION Reboot

When I first heard that Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds were going to star in a body switching comedy, my first thought was, “Hasn’t this concept been beaten to death?”  But, when I found out the guys who wrote The Hangover (Jon Lucas and Scott Moore) were writing the script and the director of Wedding Crashers (David Dobkin) was helming the project, I thought The Change-Up had the chance to be very funny.  And it is.  It’s actually the hardest I’ve laughed in a theater in a long time and I absolutely recommend checking it out this weekend.

Anyhow, I recently got to talk with David Dobkin on the phone.  We talked about how the project came together, how hard it was to get made, casting, his thoughts on extended editions and director’s cuts, and deleted scenes.  In addition, we talked about how he’s producing Jack the Giant Killer and R.I.P.D., his King Arthur movie, the Vacation reboot, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

Exclusive: Director David Dobkin Talks About His KING ARTHUR Movie and the VACATION Reboot/Sequel

With director David Dobkin’s The Change-Up opening in a few weeks, I was able to get on the phone with him yesterday to talk about the movie.  While I’m embargoed from writing a review…I will say that The Change-Up is extremely funny and the last time I laughed that hard in a theater was Bridesmaids.  Definitely recommended.

Anyway, towards the end of the interview, Dobkin gave me some updates on his King Arthur movie and also what’s up with the Vacation reboot/sequel which he’s producing.  While I knew his King Arthur movie was a priority at Warner Bros., I had no idea they were already casting and they’re planning on filming this January in London.  Much more after the jump.

Screenwriting partners John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein may have come from very different backgrounds (Daley from being an actor and Goldstein from being a lawyer), but their shared sense of humor and ability to collaborate with ease is what’s brought them the success that they’re currently experiencing in Hollywood. Clearly on a roll, with the hilariously raunchy comedy Horrible Bosses out this week, and a long list of upcoming and in-development projects, they are clearly a writing team to keep an eye on.

In this exclusive interview with Collider, John Francis Daley (Dr. Sweets on the Fox series Bones and Sam Weir on cult favorite Freaks & Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein talked about how they came onto Horrible Bosses, which had been in limbo since 2005, how having the same sense of humor strengthens their work, what it was like to see the incredible cast bring their words to life, and how impressed they were with the lengths the actors went to for comedy. They also talked about their desire to direct (they just did a Funny or Die short), what it’s like to collaborate with Steve Carell on two upcoming projects – Burt Wonderstone and Of All The Things, their desire to reboot the Vacation franchise, developing a project with Steven Spielberg (Cal of the Wild), and how they hope to continue to diversify their portfolio so that they’re not just known for one thing. New Line Prepping Another VACATION with the Griswold Family

While rumors of another Vacation movie being developed is hardly new, it seems the rumor is actually real. According to Variety, New Line is getting ready to follow a new generation of the Griswold family on an adventure.  To make it happen, the studio has hired screenwriters Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Sam Weir from Freaks and Geeks!) to pen the update.  David Dobkin’s (Wedding Crashers) is going to produce.  For more on where the Griswold’s will go, hit the jump:

New Line Packs Its Bags for a Sequel / Reboot of NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION

If anyone knows how to keep a franchise going, it’s National Lampoon. Just take a look at how many”Van Wilder” movies have been made, even after Ryan Reynolds jumped ship. Well, it looks like one of their classics is on the way back, but this time without their hands at the wheel. In an as-of-yet unnamed “Vacation” sequel, Clark Griswold’s son Rusty is all grown up and has a family of his own–one that he can drag on another trip of slapstick and misadventure.
