New Trailer for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 26th, 2012 at 11:03 am

A new trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has gone online. The film is a follow-up to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D sans Brendan Fraser’s zany antics. This new trailer isn’t incredibly different from the first trailer (except for the music), and the visual effects still look make the film look like Spy Kids: Dinosaurs! What this new trailer does have is Dwayne Johnson riding a giant bee. The trailer is preceded by an uncomfortable intro by Johnson and star Josh Hutcherson that’s saved by the duo’s charm and some pec flexing by the former.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Michael Caine, Luis Guzman, and Vanessa Hudgens. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island opens in 3D February 10th.

Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten, and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10th) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) as he searches for his missing grandfather (Michael Caine) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. Previously, we brought you the first trailer for Brad Peyton’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and a behind-the-scenes featurette soon followed. They both showed off the beautiful scenery and creature effects of the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Brendan Fraser. Now we have some new character posters for you that showcase, not only the human stars, but other inhabitants of the island as well.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island features the return of Josh Hutcherson as Sean Anderson, who is accompanied by his new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) as they head off in search of Sean’s missing grandfather (Michael Caine). To get to “Mysterious Island,” the duo will need the helicopter pilot, Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his daughter, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to help guide them.  Hit the jump to check out the posters for each of these characters.

Not long after the first trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hit the web, Warner Bros. has released a new featurette for the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Though Brendan Fraser will not be returning, Josh Hutcherson is, along with new cast members Dwayne Johnson, Luis Guzman, Vanessa Hudgens and Michael Caine. This featurette highlights some blurbs from the cast, including Johnson giving us a rule for the island (“That which is small becomes large, that which is large becomes small.”), Caine’s thoughts on 3D and Hudgens revealing the use of the Jules Verne submarine, the Nautilus. Hit the jump to check it out.

James Franco Joins Indie Flick SPRING BREAKERS; Emma Roberts May Co-Star [UPDATED]

James Franco has signed on to Harmony Korine‘s indie film Spring Breakers.  The plot centers on four college girls who rob a fast food joint so they afford to go on spring break in Florida.  To shock of no one, the idiotic plan fails and the girls get arrested.  They’re bailed out by Franco’s character, “Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer who bails them out and entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer who is appropriately named Arch.” Variety adds that Emma Roberts is in talks to play one of the co-eds, “Candy, a southern brunette who feeds off danger.” If the plot doesn’t devolve into an over-stylized quirk pile, Spring Breakers sounds like it could be a fun little flick.  Franco will shoot his part over the course of two weeks during spring break in Florida.

Franco recently dropped out of The Iceman, and is currently shooting on Sam Raimi‘s blockbuster Wizard of Oz prequel/re-imagining, Oz, The Great and Powerful.  He’ll next be seen in the indies Maladies, The Stare, and Cherry.  He’s also expected to star in Seth Rogen‘s directorial debut, The Apocalypse (formerly Seth and Jay vs. The Apocalypse). [Update: Variety has updated their story to add that Disney Channel alums Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are also in talks to join the cast.]

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this morning. First up, Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes) is in negotiations for the lead female role in Robert Zemeckis’ Flight.  The Polar Express director’s return to live-action following his ten-year stretch of motion-capture movies stars Denzel Washington as an airline pilot who is heralded as a hero after he flies a damaged plane to safety. Washington’s heroic achievement becomes overshadowed by an investigation into whether or not he had been drinking before the flight.

Deadline reports that Reilly was one of three actresses that were shortlisted for the role of Nicole, a drug addict who befriends Washington’s character as each tries to get their demons under control. Olivia Wilde and Dominique McElligott (Moon) were the other two actresses in the running, but Reilly ultimately came away with the part. Flight starts shooting this October. Hit the jump for the casting news of Vanessa Hudgens in the serial killer drama Frozen Ground.

We have some set photos to bring you from three different projects this afternoon. First up, we have a look at some props from director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Ben Foster, Guy Pearce, and Noomi Rapace, the film is set in outer space and, per the synopsis, promises to provide answers for “our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.” Next, we have some tweeted pics from the set of the pilot episode of FX’s Powers. Starring Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher), Bailee Madison (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark), and Jason Patric (The Losers), the series adapts the Brian Michael Bendis comic of the same name and focuses on two homicide detectives who specialize in investigating murders involving people with superpowers.

After the jump, you’ll also find images of Vanessa Hudgens on set of writer/director Ron Krauss’ drama Gimme Shelter. Also starring Rosario Dawson and Brendan Fraser, the film centers on a pregnant teen who, after being turned away by her business-savvy father, is forced to take to the streets and, you guessed it, dumpster dive. Hit the jump to check out all of the pics. Prometheus hits theaters on June 8th, 2012 while Powers will look to make it to series this fall. Gimme Shelter is currently eyeing a 2012 release. [Update: We have removed the images from Prometheus at the request of the studio]

SUCKER PUNCH Blu-ray Review

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch hit theaters in March earlier this year, but it’s road to theaters felt like watching a train hit the emergency break. The year before it came out, the film wowed comic-con audiences, and Warner Brothers had set visits – Snyder was still seen as a wonder boy, even if Watchmen didn’t take it home. But by the week of release, Warners couldn’t hold it in the bag: Sucker Punch is a weird movie that doesn’t totally work for a number of reasons.

It’s one of the great “I made a big hit movie, I’m going to go make my art” films that fails in interesting ways. And now there’s a director’s cut, which hopes to solve some of those problems. Emily Browning plays Babydoll, a girl with a traumatic past who’s put in an insane asylum with a bunch of other girls, and leads a fantasy life that transposes her inmates and doctors into dancers and pimps. My review of the Blu-ray and director’s cut of Sucker Punch follow after the jump.

SUCKER PUNCH Premiere Celebrity Images slice

For the premiere of Zack Snyder’s fantasy thriller Sucker Punch, the stars of the film gathered under a tent housing the black carpet, in order to escape the rain and keep their gowns dry. The film’s leading ladies – Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Jamie Chung – were ultra-glam, as they came out to support the Watchmen and 300 director, who will next be taking on Superman: Man of Steel.

Joining the film’s main cast, co-stars Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn and Oscar Isaac, mingled at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood with Watchmen star Malin Akerman, Diane Lane (seen next as Martha Kent), Red Riding Hood star Max Irons, Scream 4 star Emma Roberts and Juno Temple, who will be in The Dark Knight Rises. SUCKER PUNCH Review

Imagination does not exist in a vacuum.  We’re inspired by experiences both internal and external.  We build our dreams on the dreams of others and if we possess a brilliant imagination, then we can transform these ideas into something fresh and new.  With his new film Sucker Punch, director Zack Snyder shows he not only misunderstands how imagination works, he also has no understanding of inspiration, empowerment, or joy.  The movie swims through the wet dreams of a teenage boy but pretends at higher aspirations of thoughtful escapism and transcendent determination.  For a movie where dragons battle fighter jets and teenage girls in skimpy outfits take down samurai golems, Sucker Punch is a surprisingly dull and self-serious affair that can’t be bothered to develop its heroine, but wants a round of applause every time she defeats a CGI monstrosity.  Despite all of the energy put into the stunning vistas and designs, nothing in Sucker Punch‘s visuals comes close to the majesty of its delusions of grandeur.

Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens Jamie Chung Interview SUCKER PUNCH slice

With director Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch opening this weekend, I got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about the film.  As the synopsis says, Sucker Punch is an “epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.” The film stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, and Oscar Isaac.

During my interview with Malone, Hudgens and Chung, we talked about how everyone bonded off set when they were filming in Vancouver, the training and lack of sweets and soda on set, deleted scenes, future projects like The Hangover 2, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Jack and Diane, and we also talked about doing karaoke (they told a great story).  Hit the jump to watch and look for a new video interview for Sucker Punch everyday this week.

BEASTLY Review

by Bill Graham    Posted: March 4th, 2011 at 7:17 am

Beastly movie image slice

Beastly nearly succeeds at hiding all of its woes behind its comedic exterior. Unfortunately, the film has a devastatingly pretentious beginning and an unwieldy message. This modern day reimagining of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale goes after the teen heart with particular verve. While the film will obviously squander the good looks of star Alex Pettyfer, it makes an effort to show him doing shirtless pull-ups in the opening scene. All of this is laughably wrong, and yet the comedic bits that Beastly provides almost wipes the bad taste from your mouth by the third act. Instead of laughing at it, you begin laughing with it. However, all of its levity can only go so far to save this mixed message fairy tale about how far love can go. Hit the jump for my full review.
