The First Time is a modern and realistic look at the angst and excitement of young love.  Dave (Dylan O’Brien) is a high school senior who meets Aubrey (Britt Robertson), a junior, one night at a party and a casual conversation sparks a connection that keeps drawing them back to each other.  From writer/director Jonathan Kasdan, the film also stars Victoria Justice, Craig Robertson, Joshua Malina and Christine Taylor.  For more on the film, here’s the trailer.

At the film’s press day, actor Dylan O’Brien spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what drew him to this story and role, how relieved he was with the positive response as the film started to screen at film festivals, really staying in the moment as an actor, and how memorable the entire experience was.  He also talked about what it was like to make The Internship with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, and how director Shawn Levy is going for a more PG-13 family feel, that they’ll return to shoot Season 3 of his MTV series Teen Wolf in December, with 24 episodes now, how he has no idea what’s to come for Stiles, and that he has no idea what Stiles’ first name is.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

The first trailer is online for writer/director Jonathan Kasdan’s The First Time.  The romantic comedy centers on a burgeoning romance between two high school teens.  Unlike other films of this ilk, Kasdan’s take seems to be incredibly honest at capturing the awkwardness of the titular event.  While the leads are unrealistically attractive, the chemistry is absolutely electric between the two of them.  It’s looking like Sony made a good decision in picking the John Hughes-esque film up from Sundance.

The first trailer for The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz’s feature directorial debut Fun Size has landed online.  The comedy centers on a sarcastic teen (Victoria Justice) who is forced to take her little brother-trick-or-treating on Halloween only to lose him along the way. She must enlist the help of her best friend and a couple of “non-cool” kids in order to find her brother before the night is over.  There are a few funny bits sprinkled throughout this trailer, but on the whole it skews a lot younger than I was expecting from Schwartz (he also created NBC’s Chuck and co-created Gossip Girl).  The highlight appears to be Suburgatory star Jane Levy, who recently nabbed the lead in the Evil Dead remake.

A few months out from the festival, acquisitions of films that premiered at Sundance 2012 haven’t let up. Sony Pictures Worldwide announced today that they’ve acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to Jonathan Kasdan’s (In the Land of Women) The First Time. The film takes place over the course of one weekend and follows two high school students who fall in love. Though the logline may sound trite, the film picked up considerable notice at Sundance and drew comparisons to John Hughes’ filmography. Kasdan wrote and directed the pic, which stars Dylan O’Brien, Britt Robertson, Victoria Justice, and Craig Roberts.

One of the many films to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer-director Jonathan Kasdan‘s (In the Land of Women) The First Time.  The film stars Brittany Robertson, Dylan O’Brien, Craig Roberts, James Frecheville and Victoria Justice.  Like Richard Linklater‘s Before Sunrise (one of my favorite films), The First Time is about watching two people fall in love, except instead of taking place over one night in Vienna, The First Time takes place over a weekend and it’s about two High School students.  While I’ve seen many High School celluloid love stories crash and burn before the end credits, Kasdan pulled me in with believable dialogue, realistic situations, and he reminded me what it feels like to be seventeen and unsure of everything.  While I saw a lot of films at this year’s Sundance, The First Time was one of my favorites.

Shortly after the Festival ended, I sat down with Kasdan for an extended interview.  We talked about Sundance, the influence of Before Sunrise, how he used his own personal experiences in the script, casting, getting financing, the contrast between making studio movies versus smaller films, improv vs. sticking to the script, future projects, the irony of “discovering” talent such as Kristen Stewart before they are “box office gold,” and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Today, the 2012 Sundance Film Festival announced their In-Competition line-up, and that means we’re about to get a boatload of new images from upcoming films.  After the jump you’ll find synopses and the first images from The End of Love (starring Mark Webber, Michael Cera, and Amanda Seyfried), Filly Brown (starring Gina Rodriguez, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Edward James Olmos), The First Time (starring Dylan O’Brien, Brittany Robertson, and Craig Roberts), and The Surrogate (starring John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, and William H. Macy).

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 19 – 29th.

Actor Thomas Mann (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) is in final negotiations to join two upcoming projects. First up, the actor is in talks to star alongside Victoria Justice (TeenNick’s Victorious) in Fun Size. Marking the feature directorial debut of Josh Schwartz (creator/executive producer of Chuck, Gossip Girl), the film tells the story of a teenage girl who loses her younger brother trick-or-treating on Halloween. Variety reports that Mann will play Roosevelt, “the star of his school’s debate team who is in love with Justice’s character, Wren.” He aids Wren in the search for her brother. Max Werner (The Colbert Report) wrote the script.

Joshua Jackson (Fringe) is in talks to star opposite Bruce Willis and Rebecca Hall in Lay the Favorite, based on the life of Beth Raymer.  Once a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, Raymer became an elite professional gambler: “After falling in love, Raymer soon begins to re-evaluate her life and the profession she has chosen.”  Hall will portray Raymer — Willis will play her gambling mentor Dink Heimowitz.  Last we checked, Catherine Zeta-Jones was in talks to play Willis’ wife in the film.  Variety doesn’t specify in their report, but my instinct says Jackson is up for the love interest.  Lay the Favorite reunites director Stephen Frears (Tamara Drewe) with his High Fidelity screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis.
