Director Brad Parker Talks CHERNOBYL DIARIES and His Future Bad Robot Project

Chernobyl Diaries marks the directorial debut of visual effects maven Brad Parker.  The film eschews its found-footage conceit early yet still maintains that sub-genre’s documentary/cinema verite aesthetic.  Chernobyl Diaries is a less-is-more type flick, with a majority of the “creatures” completely enshrouded in darkness and most of the character deaths happening just off frame. In the following interview, director Brad Parker discusses settling on a “looser” camera, the surprising films he emulated for Chernobyl’s ‘look’ (hint: think Woody Allen) and the budgetary & creative principles behind his less-is-more aesthetic.   I also try and find out about his Bad Robot project, but he’s been trained well.  For the full interview, hit the jump.

Josh Brolin Talks MEN IN BLACK 3, GANGSTER SQUAD, OLDBOY, LABOR DAY and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

Today, the third Men in Black movie hits theaters.  Barry Sonnenfeld returns as director, and the story finds Will Smith’s Agent J traveling back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K.  Josh Brolin plays a younger version of Jones’ character, and does an incredible job; you’ll be totally convinced you’re watching a young Tommy Lee Jones.  During my interview with Brolin, we talked about his awesome performance, his first day on set, favorite movies, Fahrenheit 451, and future projects like Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad, Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day, Spike Lee‘s Oldboy, and Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Oren Peli Talks CHERNOBYL DIARIES, Found Footage Movies, and More

For some odd reason, I had assumed Chernobyl Diaries to be another entry into the ever-growing found footage horror sub-genre, perhaps due to Oren “Paranormal Activity” Peli’s moniker or to the trailer’s Cinema verite feel.  But imagine my chagrin when about five minutes into Chernobyl Diaries, the film hastily eschews its found footage conceit instead opting for a third person narrative.  I mean it’s still the same old, same old: a bunch of stupid American tourists go to a place they shouldn’t and then get offed one by one – but, hey, at least they’re smart enough to turn their fucking iPhone cameras off as their friends get dismembered.

More so: Is this discarding of the found-footage format indicative of something larger?  Could it be a sign that Oren Peli – responsible for reigniting the craze in the first place – grows tired of all that camera shaking, fourth walling breaking shtick?  This was the question on my mind when I sat down with Peli to discuss Chernobyl Diaries, which he co-wrote and produced.  In the following interview, Peli discusses moving away from found-footage, whether or not he feels pigeonholed by the genre, and balancing the creative and business sides of his position as writer/producer.  For the full interview, hit the jump.

While not as well known in America as some of his counterparts in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Rodrigo Santoro is absolutely the bigger star in places like Brazil.  That’s because while Santoro has acted in some Hollywood movies and TV shows like Love Actually, 300, I Love You Phillip Morris (which is severely underrated) and Lost (he played Paulo), in Brazil he’s acted in countless movies and he’s a big time movie star.

At the recent Los Angeles press day for What to Expect When You’re Expecting (he plays Jennifer Lopez‘s husband), I landed an extended interview with Santoro.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about how he got into acting, his favorite movies, how he got cast in What to Expect, the success of Love Actually, and the 300 sequel/spin-off 300: Battle of Artemisia . In addition, Santoro addresses the rumor of him playing famed Brazilian Formula One racer, Ayrton Senna, in a feature film.  If the project comes together it sounds like it could be really cool, and he definitely looks the part.  Hit the jump to watch.

There’s a variety of personalities that are interlaced in the study group on NBC’s Community, but the most eccentric of them all is Abed Nadir, played by Danny Pudi. At the beginning of the series he came off as the stereotypical socially awkward, nerdy type who quickly developed into a wonderfully complex character who’s going through even more of an identity crisis during the second half of this season. Will Evil Abed reign supreme in his mind? We don’t know, but we certainly want to find out.

We got the chance to speak with Danny Pudi about Abed being pushed to the limit this season, how fascinating it is he knows so much about pop culture and anymore possible Cougar Town references.

Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard and Brooklyn Decker Talks BATTLESHIP, Improv, Sci-Fi, Chicken Burritos and More

Opening this Friday is director Peter Berg’s adaptation of the board game Battleship.  The action-adventure pic takes place on the seas and centers on a group of Naval officers who must fight to keep an alien force from destroying our world.  Taylor Kitsch leads a cast that includes Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson.

Yvette Nicole Brown COMMUNITY Set Visit Interview

If there’s one thing that Community isn’t short on, it’s strong women.  Easily one of the most powerful women in the show is Shirley, played by Yvette Nicole Brown.  Her character was at first portrayed to be just a kind-hearted religious mother but as the seasons went by we got a better look at her complex personality and how that sometimes clashes with some members of the study group.  Though the study group has had it’s differences in the past, Shirley has helped bring them back together.  She’s the heart and soul of the group.

Back in February we got the chance to sit down and speak with Yvette Brown, dressed in hospital garb, not only about the latest episode but her love for the fans and how the season finale could possibly wrap up the entire show.
