In case you were somehow confused by the recent set photos Vin Diesel has been sending out, Universal Pictures has announced that principal photography has officially begun on Riddick. The press release provides an updated synopsis and casting info. We knew that Diesel would be joined by Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, and Jordi Molla, but now Bokeem Woodbine and David Bautista have been confirmed as cast members. The film also stars Matt Nable, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk, and Keri Hilson.

Vin Diesel has been extremely generous when it comes to fans of Riddick. He lobbied incredibly hard to get the Chronicles of Riddick sequel made in the first place, and now that production is underway he’s been sharing production photos from the set. Diesel sent out a new image from the set today, giving us another look at the actor in character. While it’s nice to be getting these looks at the titular Riddick, I’m hoping Diesel sends out photos of his castmates soon. Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff plays Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with tracking down Riddick, and Jordi Molla is onboard as Santana, a leader of an eight-man crew bent on killing the anti-hero.

Now that filming on Riddick has begun, it looks like Vin Diesel will be sending out a steady stream of set photos. Nine days ago, we got our first look at everyone’s favorite Furyan and now Diesel has released another set photo. As you can see from this set photo, Vin Diesel is in the movie and it looks like he’ll be reprising his role of anti-hero Richard B. Riddick. This is only speculation on my part. Take it with a grain of salt.

Production on the long-gestating sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick is finally underway, and star Vin Diesel kicked things off right by giving fans a look at himself in full costume on set. David Twohy returns to write and direct Riddick, and quite a few exciting new names have come onboard the project. Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff plays Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with tracking down the titular anti-hero, and Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II) plays Santana, a leader of an eight-man crew bent on killing Riddick (long story short, everyone wants to kill Riddick). Karl Urban is reprising his role as Lord Vaako, and Diesel looks comfortably familiar back in his Riddick garb.

Earlier today, at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with actress Katee Sackhoff for an exclusive interview. While she was there to promote her new A&E western crime drama Longmire, which debuts this summer, we did also get the chance to ask her about the role she recently signed on to play in the upcoming Riddick sequel with Vin Diesel, that is being directed by David Twohy.
Sackhoff talked about having grown up watching science fiction and action, what a huge fan she is of the first two movies, how excited she is “to go blow some shit up,” her crazy (and I mean crazy!) audition story, and how she’s already packed on nine pounds of muscle in training, in an attempt to compete with her co-star. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

While you probably know her as Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, Katee Sackhoff will soon have a new sci-fi franchise to add to her repertoire. We previously reported that Sackhoff was being considered for a role opposite Vin Diesel in the upcoming sci-fi flick, Riddick. It now looks as if she’s a lock as Sackhoff is reported to be in final negotiations for the role. She’ll be playing Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with tracking down the titular anti-hero. Also playing the mercenary game is Jordi Molla (Blow) who will play Santana, a leader of an eight-man crew bent on killing Riddick. Things are not looking up for our favorite Furyan.
The third installment of the franchise that started with Pitch Black and staggered with The Chronicles of Riddick was once again written and directed by David Twohy; it also stars Karl Urban reprising his role as Lord Vaako. Hit the jump for more on Riddick.

After the smashing success of Justin Lin’s Fast Five, Universal got moving on not only a sixth film but also a seventh installment in the surprisingly long-legged franchise. While initially only one sequel was conceived, we learned in October that the studio was hoping to shoot a sixth and seventh film back-to-back. The two sequels would act as a “Part 1” and a “Part 2”, so presumably it’s one story split in half. Lin is back in the director’s chair for the films, and last we heard Chris Morgan was working on one giant script to link the two movies together. Star Vin Diesel recently opened up a bit about the projects, explaining how it became two sequels in the wake of Fast Five. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Vin Diesel has been all too happy to share tidbits of information and concept art from the upcoming Riddick, but production on the sequel was halted when the production company ran out of money, and couldn’t pay the owner of the Montreal studio where filming was underway. However, TMZ [via CinemaBlend] is reporting that the movie has secured new financing, paid off its debt, and that filming is set to resume on December 28th. As we previously reported, Riddick is trying to keep costs more along the lines of Pitch Black in order to maintain an R-rating and (hopefully) have an easier time of turning a profit. 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick flopping at the box office sent the franchise into stasis (although they were able to squeeze out the video game Assault on Dark Athena in 2009). Hopefully, the production won’t have to worry about being shut down again.
David Twohy‘s Riddick also stars Karl Urban and possibly Andreas Apergis, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, and Dave Bautista. Hit the jump for the official synopsis. If filming does pick up before year’s end and Riddick can find distribution, it might hit theaters in 2012.

The long-in-development Riddick is finally closing in on its start date. Producer and star Vin Diesel has been keeping fans updated by posting on his Facebook page and sharing pieces of concept art. Yesterday, Diesel showed off some concept art for Necro-armor. As you may recall from The Chronicles of Riddick (or not, which is fine because it’s not a good movie), the Necromongers are the bad guys and they’ll be factoring into the plot for the upcoming sequel. The concept art is only one design for the Necro-armor and it doesn’t look like it will be used since Diesel commented, “Haha, I had to share.” Diesel added the movie “starts principal photography in weeks” and re-confirmed the R-rating.

Justin Lin’s Fast Five is preposterously entertaining in all the right ways. Modern cinema likes to couch its action movies these days in special effects and the sci-fi and fantasy genres so much that a film about a heist and people driving cars really fast comes across as a breath of fresh air. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson star in the fifth entry in the Fast and Furious franchise, this time taking place in Rio where Brian O’Connor (Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Diesel) go head to head with evil crime boss (Joaquim de Almeida) and have to assemble a team out of the actors who’ve previously appeared in the franchise. Our review of the Blu-ray of Fast Five follows after the jump.

I was under the impression that the third Riddick film would try to put as much distance between it and The Chronicles of Riddick as possible. Whenever Vin Diesel brings up the new sequel, he always mentions Pitch Black and not the PG-13 flop that had him and director David Twohy scrapping to get an R-rated third installment off the ground. But Bloody-Disgusting reports that Karl Urban, who played the disgraced “Lord Vakko” in Chronicles, will be returning for the third movie. While we’ve been calling the upcoming film “Riddick” and all the concept art is labeled “Riddick“, BD refers to the movie with its older title, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking, so maybe that’s being used again? (I hope not. Unless you’re a Naked Gun movie, your title should not be a play on words).
There’s no word yet on how Vakko will factor into the plot but you can hit the jump for the official synopsis. Urban will next be seen playing the title character in the new adaptation of Judge Dredd, Dredd.

Vin Diesel continues to play to his fans by releasing another piece of concept art from Riddick. On his Facebook page, Diesel says that the fight to get the film an R-rating has indirectly led to an extensive pre-production phase. I’m hoping that the film hits production soon because if Diesel keeps posting this concept art, he may inadvertently spoil his own movie. You’ll understand what I mean if you click through to see the whole concept art and read the tiny description in the lower right-hand corner.

Pre-production on Riddick churns on and Vin Diesel has bestowed his Facebook fans with a new piece of concept art. I hope folks don’t consider this to be a spoiler because if you didn’t think that Riddick could get blood splattered on his face, then you probably aren’t familiar with the Riddick films. However, if it’s chocolate getting splattered on his face, then I have no idea what to expect from this sequel.
Diesel also told fans that shooting will begin in Canada, a country that also played host to shooting on The Chronicles of Riddick. Let’s hope the third film in the franchise plays better (going for an R-rating is a push in the right direction). Hit the jump to check out the concept art and a statement from Diesel on the film.

Vin Diesel, who does it all for the fans, has released some concept art from Riddick 3. Recently, Diesel pretended to hem and haw over whether or not he should take a pay cut for a film he’s supposedly been passionate it about for years, but it looks like the project is moving forward with shooting likely to begin this September. As a birthday present for Diesel, Riddick director David Twohy sent along some concept art for the film and Diesel has now shared the concept art on his Facebook page. The way the image is drawn, it looks like Riddick destroyed a planet and half a mountain with a knife. He apparently also has a new pet.

Vin Diesel is on board to produce and star in an untitled action/thriller project from Unknown screenwriters Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell. Details regarding the untitled project are sparse, but I’ll go on record as predicting you can probably expect a car chase or two somewhere along the way. Variety reports that Diesel and partner Samantha Vincent will co-produce the film through their One Race Prods. moniker alongside Simon Cornwell and Rhodri Thomas of Ink Factory.
In addition to this most recent project, Diesel is also poised to begin production on the next Riddick film this September in Canada. He is also attached to pull producer/star duty in the MGM action/comedy The Machine. As for Butcher and Cornwell, the writing team is currently working on an adaptation of the Warren Ellis graphic novel Gravel for Legendary. Lastly, regardless of how you feel about either Diesel or Butcher and Cornwell’s Unknown, you can’t argue with the type of international success each has had at the box office. Both Fast Five and Unknown earned more in foreign markets than in their domestic counterpart. Look for this most recent project to be packaged with that type of international success in mind as well.
